And magnificent it is indeed!

I'm definitely not into the big beasts, but woah nonetheless!

The Beasty is IMPRESSIVE! It reminds me of the Dragon from the 1981 movie, Dragonslayer.

I love dragons. That one is a beautiful sculpt.
Where do you get one?
I think the scale looks OK.
What are the plans to use him?

Its a lovely looking model,(I would have said miniature ,but it looks like it takes up nearly two square feet of table top)but I can't help but feel its a bit of a white elephant.I've 26" high balrog in my workshop. That's a pain in the rump to store.I'm still looking for bits of resin sword from the last time it tried to leave home and jump off the table.
Just out of interest do you intend on painting it with washes over a sand coloured base coat?(Only asked because thats the only way I could think of.Short of crancking up the old airbrush)Or do you have a cunning plan?
Mark.

^I agree...it's the same way I feel about many massive models, particularly resin.  They're neat to look at, but unless you have a plinth somewhere in your mansion to store the thing, why bother?  And at 400+ cost...that's...absurd anyway.  Unless you're a master painter, or really want to try using this thing on a tabeltop (would you risk it?) I think they're all kind of silly.

But...if people buy them, good for them.  Heck people buy Forgeworld titans, etc.  lol

I've just had to check the movie stills, and it's a pretty good likeness. However, it's made me realise that this version of Smaug isn't a dragon at all, but technically a really big wyvern  lol

(Caveat: Yes, I know it's not real. Yes, I know it's been done before, i,e, Skyrim. But heraldry and mythology, so there  ;D )

Bloody impressive model all the same!

Huh, go figure. I just Googled Smaug and found this snippet of info:

Quote
Apparently Smaug's design was actually changed even from the minor glimpses you see in the first Hobbit movie. This seems to be due to a mix of several things. First, 4-legged drakes are a bit outdated compared to their wyvern cousins who are more often represented in movies and tv shows nowadays (such as Beowulf and Game of Thrones). Second, despite being mythical creatures, it is still important to make them seem as realistic as possible in the movies, and so a nimble creature with only 2 legs could fly much more realistically than a heavier version with 4 legs. Lastly, Benedict's performance gave a serpent-like appearance to Smaug and so the designers adjusted him to fit the way he was portrayed.

okay so a giant flaming eye atop a skyscraper in a highly volcanic and earth quake prone landscape is okay? But a four legged dragon is pushing it!
Its twoddle! they invented characters that aren't in the books. To kill of hero's.When hero's die at the hands of nobodies,Just as Tolkien wrote and saw for himself during WW1.Then leave out major characters from the books because it'd make them two long,Then drag out the hobbit to three films.
I saw the elven horse's chasing wargs. And thought that'll make GW happy, then wondered if it wasn't a fantasy film version of product placement.

More likely modeling a two legged wyvern was cheaper and more "trendy" according to somebody not interested in the book content, or the author's own pictures.

Benedict's performance gave a serpent-like appearance to Smaug and so the designers adjusted him to fit the way he was portrayed.

I thought he did the voice acting, are they suggesting he was doing the physical part as well ?(visions of him prancing around in front of a green screen being snake-like....)

Smaug was a big bad-ass Dragon bad guy. I always saw him more like an overgrown cat with wings!

sleepy when necessary - wide awake, fast, agile and a complete bastard when needed. I actually did not even realise they chopped his wings off and put flaps on his legs instead in the films sigh, shows how much attention I was really paying.

Makes him more like a fur-less giant flying squirrel really... A really nasty one.

Still that model is a brilliant one though a bit outside my budget.

The deal breaker for me, aside from price, is that it's resin.  Sorry, resin is great for display, but I don't paint that well. I like to use my kit, so I went with the Otherworld Red Dragon... And he is epic! The most by far I've ever spent!

Biggest I ever had was Grenedier's Teronus the Ultimate Dragon

Still hoping its in a box somewhere in the loft from moving years ago, really liked that one, have not found it yet.. Part of my lead mountain I have not been able to find from back then.

Otherwise its going to be hard to resist getting one from Mirliton if I actually can..

http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=teronus-the-ultimate-dragon&cName=fantasy-2528mm-dragons

i think next weekend will spend several hours in the loft to see if he is indeed there somewhere.

the joys of nostalgia  :)

Would certainly give me a reason to order some stuff from them  :D

Have to check the postage...
