Do any of you guys know where I could buy some small acrylic half-domes (no larger than 10mm diameter)
I got some from the local arts-supply store, but only found out they were solid when I got home and they have to be hollow.
I have 2 Crawler Cyborgs by Brother Vinni that I'm planning to convert those into Robobrains.
I managed to copy the brains from a horrorclix figure now I just need 2 domes to cover them.
-
I keep thinking of cheap stuff, like capsule toy shells or the lids for slushy drinks.
-
I know, I did find some strips of pills in my medicine cabinet that I could use as a substitute (since the bubbles on those aren't really the shape I want)
I probably should have a look at some cheap toys in the store.
-
Your best bet is probably heatforming some blister plastic is similar.
Try find a suitable "mold", a rounded wooden dowel or similar. Heat the plastic and pull in on top of the "mold".
-
the round end of some transparent writing implement would appear the right place to look for

First thought is: can you not just drill out the solid half-domes you have?
Second thought is: why do they have to be acrylic?
Third thought is: can you not buy hollow balls and cut them in half? For example, these (http://uk.alibaba.com/products/10mm-hollow-plastic-ball.html). Alternatively, what about the hollow balls you get in the end of things like ladies' concealer applicators?
More ideas:
- Teddy bear/dolls eyes?
- Googly eyes?
- Cheapo jelwellery beads (example (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/925-Sterling-Silver-Layered-CLASSIC-HOLLOW-BALL-BEAD-BRACELET10MM-ROUND-BEADS-/281173401022?pt=AU_FashionJewellery&hash=item41773d9dbe))?
- Hemispherical plastic screw covers for bathroom mirrors?

Well, they need to fit over a brain like this:
I've been thinking about using my mototool to drill out the solid ones, but I don't know if they will turn opaque. Then again, it's not like I have another use for 'em ::)
I really need them clear so the brains are visible, which is also the main reason several of your other suggestions won't cut it for me. (beads crossed my mind, but are also mostly solid...)

These (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/321194188596?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0) any good?

That looks very good !
The backing, any idea if it's possible to just peel that off ?
-
Should be, but the plastic is fairly thin - you can slice the dome off with a sharp knife carefully.
Then again, they come in several sizes, and you get 100 for £0.99, so I guess you can afford a few mistakes at least? :P
-
Iwas going to suggest those, and also buttons. Have you got a nearby haberdashers?
-
Haberdashers. Had to look that up.
So yes, there's a Veritas shop nearby and that got me thinking, only 25m from that store is a crafts shop and lo and behold what I found on their site :
googly eyes. 10 for €0.90 in al sorts of sizes :)
I'll go have a look tomorrow.
Thanks guys !

Don't use superglue, they'll fog up.
I used PVA on my Cobalts.
Oh bummer, seems the pad is too stupid to copy the url on a pic. Oh well see here

True, although I'll probably use epoxy glue.

Something else that might work if you can find them are the pop dome rubber toys that tend to be sold as party favors.
-
Made a quick setup to see if the proportions are good and I feel the "head" is a bit too small. Gonna look around some more hoping to find something about 12 to 14 mm dia.

Well, they do make bigger googly eyes! lol
-
Try medical supplies.
Lots of tablets and even contact lenses will come in these clear blisters.
If you know anyone who works in a doctor's surgery or a hospital then they might know of something that can work.

Here are some thoughts;
Cosmetics - caps for under arm deodorants, lipstick caps and plastic covers for make-up brushes.
Christmas - search out Christmas tree decorations, I have seen some plastic balls with decorations inside - although these might be a little too big.
Electronics - Maplins in the UK sell light bulb covers in clear, coloured and misted. These might work.
Good luck.

I've had these bookmarked for a while, but haven't tried them yet:

It might also be worth checking:

Well' I returned to the arts shop and would you know, they happend to have hollow domes :D
Probably the same as in that second link from Steve F.
Anyway, bought the 14,3mm ones and already fabricated the supports and the brains got their paint and are drying as we speak. Still have to look at the wiring towards the brain as well as the plate on the back of the dome (although that seems to much trouble for what it is)

Finished this. Pics etc... in the PA board : http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71512.0

Don't think so, those things are mostly full cast, and as said, I found the correct stuff and already finished the conversion ;)

Interesting site. Bookmarked ! :)

Heh, I'm also looking for some domes for the same model, and funnily enough followed a link in another thread to the eModels site for some bottles. I think I'll give them a shot. Thanks for creating this thread zizi666, pretty helpful. ;)

Just wasn`t here a while cause of stressy Job and anyone forgot the stuff I wrote. Life of a Forum Nerd lol
Here you can see how I made my Robobraindomes with the schuckertz Stuff. They have a great quality. I used a roundhole gauge and a Hammer to seperate the dome from the frame. The yellowish color is easy to make with a yellow permanent marker.

Doh! Why didn't I think of that...

Holiday lights, aka Christmas lights. Some types have little spherical faux-bulbs over the LEDs that are on one side or the other of 10mm. Sometimes glass, but often plastic these days. Think they're called "globe" lights. Lots of different varieties and thus sizes to choose from, plus, y'know, handfuls of cheap LEDS as a bonus.
