Title: Maximilian in Mexico game; new pics: republican artillery
Post by: Admiral Benbow on October 07, 2014, 04:52:30 PM
This year's THS-game for the Crisis show in Antwerp is named "Imperial Disaster" - Maximilian in Mexico. I just finished the Bataillon de l'Imperatrice, the grenadier battalion of the Belgian Legion. All miniatures by Gringo 40's, the figures are full of character and a joy to paint:

The game's background features the aftermath of the 3rd siege of Puebla in central Mexico in April 1867 during the so called “Mexican Adventure”. From the THS leaflet:

>> The Republicans laid siege to and finally stormed the important town of Puebla. The remnants of the Imperial multi-national army are now heading for the shelter of the strongly fortified Bastion Guadalupe bypassing the less well fortified convent Loreto. The Republicans, many of them ill equipped peasants, are on the Imperials heels, trying to prevent them from reforming at Guadalupe.
•   Will most of the Imperials reach the relative safety of the bastion?
•   Do some of their troops still have the stamina to make a stand and cover the retreat of their comrades?
•   Can the Republican high command coordinate their enthusiastic but unruly and insufficient armed forces to effectively seal off the road leading to the fort?
The Mexican crown and the life of the Emperor Maximilian himself are at stake in the fighting retreat!

The game is played with hand painted 28mm miniatures and is designed for up to six players. The rules are based on the Black Powder set of rules by Warlord Games with a couple of special rules for the scenario. There are 400+ miniatures on the table from Gringo 40s, Foundry and quite a few other manufacturers. The game is run by an umpire on a table of 3,25 by 1,50 metres. The board consists of sculptured terrain on variable wooden framed Styrofoam tiles with some commercial features (building, hills etc.) added. The bastion Guadalupe is one part of a Vauban-fortress, completely scratch-build by one of our lads. <<

This is the mentioned Vauban-fortress, as some of you will remember, and we'll use the larger part of it:

More pics of the game coming soon ...

So you want more pictures? Well then, have a look at the terrain for our game.
The terrain-pieces and tiles have been renovated or newly built by Georg from our team and me specially for our MiM-Project (Maximilian in Mexico 1867). The job took us over 60 hours, a lot of material and several litres of coke and coffee.

I'm not sure, but my take would be:

Gringo, obviously, but there is also Foundry's 1870 French and the Maximilian War range.  The artillery in the last picture looks like Perry ACW plastic artillery.  I am certain that you could adapt some of Perrys other ranges, esp the plastic Zouaves. Perry's Carlist range has some usable civilians and priests. Boot Hill do loads of Mexicans that could be converted.

joras is quite right, he spotted most of the ranges and manufacturers, he failed only on a few Dixon (ex-)Confederates plus some individuals from companies, even we don't know. But to be fair, these miniatures did not appear in the pictures. We might add a few "charros" from West Wind and "peones" from Grenadier in the near future.

Thanks for all the nice comments, chaps!

Some more pictures of the mexican republican artillery. As it happens that the republican army got some supplies (parrot guns, uniforms) from the Union after the Civil War had ended, we could use the Perry ACW artillery set. I added a bit more hair and moustaches to some of the crew and converted some details ...

I love the vulture gazing down on its potential victim.

Yes, the storytelling in the vignette is actually the best part:
When the Mexicans stripped the paint from the Union parrots, they forgot to put back the steel bands on the wheels. Naturally, these then broke at the slightest stress, and the serviceman got in the way and injured.
Now he sits on the ground and swears "Me cago en la leche, if I ever get out of this alive, someone will get his bollocks kicked"  lol  8)

No need, just send it to Buenos Aires. They consume mountains of it in Argentina, it's called dulce de leche. Same colour too.

Crisis is comming nearer and nearer. Most of our preparations are finished and wrapping the stuff is the order of the day.

Anyway I yesterday I prepared some pics from our last test game:

If you like those you might want to have a look at the whole post. On my blog I presented some lines about the historical background of the game and some more (and larger) pictures: Here (Link). (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2014/10/finally-crisis-2014-is-almost-here-and.html#comment-form)

I hope you enjoy it !

Beauty of a game, had armies for these around 10-15 years ago but at the time only foundry new offerings and picking up the old old perry range on ebay was the option.
