First outing for my figures, rules used were Muskets and tomahawks, played them straight with British regulars (3 units of 10) and grenadiers (2 units of 10), Militia 2 units of ten defending a blockhouse and the local settlers farms of 4 buildings which held 13 settlers all armed.
The Maoris were played as indians with a morale boost to make them have regular morale to match points.
The game objectives were to burn down and run off the settlers and also burn the blockhouse. The British merely had to prevent this and rout the Maori.
The Game started well for the Maori with them attacking the farms, the militia immediately ran for help to the regular force camped not too far away, however it was to be a hard slog as they were immediately hit by musket fire, they fought on taking casualties but then were assaulted by a band of Maori, by this point the regulars had seen and heard the fight and raised the alarm with the british moving to the rescue.
Despite the maori setting ambushes the British moved forward taking heavy casualties until their massed fire power routed the Maori.
At the other end of the table the farms were all well alight and one collapsed killing 5 settlers whilst an additional 2 settlers were shot defending their homesteads, the remainder fled for their lives.
The remaining victorious Maori then turned their attention to the blockhouse and a hard fought battle ensued with the Maori gaining the walls but being repeatedly pushed back.
The regulars cleared those Maori holding them back and the Grenadiers charged forward clearing the area and breaking the Maori attack.
So the day ended with the Maori fleeing the field . Of note was the duel fought between the Chief and the Grenadier officer who was slain in single combat only to be shot down by the soldiers too late to save their officer.
Really enjoyed the game, night fell reducing vision and movement, another random event saw a lone farmer gun down no less than 3 Maori! and first casualty for the British was friendly fire!!!

Excellent! That looks like a lot of fun. M&T is a good rule set.

That sounds like it was a terrific game. Lots going on, that all added up to a tied-in narrative.
The photos are great, too. Nice to see your wonderful figures in action. Your scenery looks the part.
I'm going to have to check out these M&T rules fro my own NZ Wars gaming, by the sound of it ...

Hmm, did some investigation on the 'net about M&T. They do look quite good - but, yikes, the expense! I do have some painted Eureka colonial NZ Wars figures for sale at the moment, so maybe if I can raise enough ...

Roly, they are worth it. IMHO great set of rules, used a number of times for F&IW, now to convince a friend to use his Maori stuff for the rules. Have flicked your TradeMe info to him. He is a Kiwi and still has NZ bank accounts AFAIK.

Many thanks gents, the rules worked well, I have a British force for FIW and the rules work well so thought would give them a go as was planning on using This very Ground but the lads I was gaming with hadnt played those rules but once with my Brazilian indians so thought these would be much quicker to pick up.
I didnt use stats for shot guns but think pistols would work as easily.
I still have another 50 british and some naval support to paint and around another 40 Maori to paint (to give around 100 maori ;D) I have a full maori Pa to build which will happen..honest guv ;D
Roly the rules are worth the money, there are deals out there to be had but not so sure over in NZ. In the UK got them for less than £20.

Excellent looking game. Very impressed with the look.
Been using those rules for FIW and planned to use them for Maori wars. I just have to actually paint some figures lol
