Title: Another set of rules for Zombies?
Post by: geoffb on 20 October 2014, 06:27:44 PM
Gents

I've been working on a set of Wild West rules called Tin Star for a while now and hope to have them released in the not too distant! For quite a while I've been planning on adapting the system to a different theme and have settled on a zombie game very much inspired by the Walking Dead TV series.
Just wondering if I could float the idea past you as to whether the concept is sound.

The main system mechanics are largely settled already but I have a specific aim for this game and it is that it will largely be a solo game where the plan is to take your band of survivors through a campaign of linked scenarios with the aim to simply survive. You will start with a small set of figures probably around 5 characters on average and you may gain or lose people and fail if they are all killed. The less people you have then probably the less chance that you will make it through the campaign.

It will be intended to play on a small game area - somewhere between 2 and 3 feet square. The Zombies will be controlled by dice and/or cards. You will have a goal or two to achieve to win each scenario which could be anything from just escaping an area to getting food or even clearing an area of Zombies.

The idea is for it to be a light game playable in approximately an hour requiring about 10 survivor figures for the whole campaign and probably no more than 20 zombies at the most. Your team will get more skills and items as they progress but will also probably pick up injuries and lose items as well.

There are many Zombie rulesets already out there but this game will principally be aimed at this smaller space and solo play through self-contained but linked scenarios and although I'm sure it will be able to handle bigger games and multiple players that will not be the central aim.

Any thoughts or comments?

Cheers
Geoff

Sounds good from what you have written, I think the scenario will be the key as zombie gamers will likely have quite large hordes more often than not :)

Sounds intriguing.  :)

Is there a chance to design your starting survivors or is it done by a set of random rolls/tables?

I would probably go for random as this is how the Wild West version works however I guess there could easily be options to design as well.
The plan would be that it should really be a challenge to survive and that you would probably need to play well and have a bit of luck to succeed. If you could design your band then maybe it should be slightly tougher to allow for being able to select a better balanced team.

Incidentally as with Tin Star there should not need to be any rule look-ups required during game time as the dice handle all of that.
The rulebook would be needed though to handle the between game stuff.

Sounds cool. I was just implying that a balance could be reached by substituting firepower for manpower with an initial set-up for the survivors.

A couple of military specialists on a rescue mission instead of a band of rag tag survivors. Just to give the game an extra draw.  :)

I'm definitely interested.  Sounds fun, and the 'solo gaming' aspect helps.
