I bought some Teutonic Knights and the Deus Vult rule set and whilst waiting for them to arrive I came across Lion Rampant. Pretty weird really as the boxes I ordered had enough minis to make up a Teutonic Knight retinue......
Any how I've built and under-coated the 12 mounted knights, 6 mounted sergeants, 12 foot sergeants and 12 crossbowmen. I'm saving the the other 6 mounted sergeants to make some mounted sergeants at arms with crossbows ( just need to source some) as an alternative to the regular mounted sergeants.
Here they are so far:

All of the bases have 0.4mm thick magnetic sheet attached and I have some resin movement trays with rubber "metal" sheet stuck to them. Not overly strong magnetic hold but enough for plastic minis:

I also knocked up a quick roster sheet:
Once these are finished I will probably go for some Mongols, although I am very tempted to do some fantasy stuff.......
I've a lot on at the moment so progress may be a little slow.

Awesome. Those charging mounted knights look positively Eisenstein-ish.
-
whats it play like...?
-
Ohh, great start.
Will follow this projekt with interest.
But skip on that fantasy thingy, there are absolutly to few Mongol projects here. :D
Besides, you will need a oposing army for these.
-
That's a lotta painting Pappa! o_o
Good luck!
-
I cant wait to see these painted up.
Would love to see some Mongol stuff too.
You can always add small fantasy elements to an otherwise historical army. I am doing that with my Samurai so the can serve double duty as both a historical and fantasy army. All I need to do is remove the models or Units that contain stuff like Oni and they become a mostly Historical force.
For example a few mythological creatures that suit the tone of the army in question like for example some Angels to go with your Teutonic knights.
-
good start
-
Good job Pappa. :D
-
Interesting start, looking forward to your painting progress ... I wish I could handle such large units projects as easily as you and others do. Deep respect! :o
-
A quick update of my progress so far. Pretty much completed the first six knights. They need weathering ( far too white!!!) and the bases need to be completed.
The shields and crosses are home-made transfers.

Could you tell us how you make your transfers please!
Very nice painting indeed :) :)
-
Looking good :)

Fantastic looking lineup. The Fireforge models look really nice; very dynamic poses
-
Thank you all for the comments.
Could you tell us how you make your transfers please!
I use laserjet decal paper from:
http://creativepaperco.com/laser-printer-paper
I really love this stuff. It doesn't need spraying with varnish to "fix" it prior to dipping in water. It comes in clear ( which I used on these) and white. Really nice product and a decent price.

fantastic painting, look forward to seeing more :)

I guess the next question is how do you get the images onto the sheets. Do you send the image in and they put it on for you?

I guess the next question is how do you get the images onto the sheets. Do you send the image in and they put it on for you?
The sheets are blank and you print them yourself using a laser printer ( the sheets look like glossy photo paper). If you haven't got a laser printer ( I've got a cheap Dell one) you can get decal paper for inkjet printers although they need more prep as you need to "fix" them with varnish before soaking in water.

Just completed my first 6 Teutonic Knights. I decided to go for some snow on the bases for that Eastern European Winter feel!
Thought I'd take a few pics using a black background to make them stand out a little more:

I love the brown smudges on these guys, the harsh reality of wearing white on the march. lol

They look great. The weathering really makes them stand out.
Really like the snow on the bases too. :D

Another great project!!! Bravo Pappa!!!

Looking good!

Lovely work Pappa, looking forward to seeing more.

Lovely stuff

Very nice painting. The weathering and detailing makes the black and white really effective without fading into grey.

Great looking project so far. Nice!

What is your snow recipe?

Thank you for all the comments. I should have the crossbowmen completed over the next couple of days.
Great :-*
What is your snow recipe?
I used "deluxe" scenic snow set from Antenocitis Workshop. I love this stuff as it actually looks like snow rather than just white flock. The "Icy Sparkles" are awesome for a really nice twinkle effect. The whole set is a little expensive but it goes a long way. The "scatter grip" glue you get with it is brilliant. It's like watered down PVA but always stays a little flexible. I've got minis I did years ago and they don't yellow with age.
Antenocitis don't have any in stock at the moment but here is the manufacturer's site:

Just finished my Teutonic crossbowmen. I was going to paint them in straight grey with "Tau" symbols but I decided I'd play a little with the colour scheme. I know that they aren't historically accurate but I'm quite pleased with them.

Fantastic painting.

Makes me want to throw mine out.
Back to the drawing board for me.
That's why I like to visit here. It pushes me to do better.
These look awesome.

Thank you all for your comments. I've been a little busy lately but have managed to finish my mounted Sergeant-at-arms. I stuck with the same colour scheme as the crossbowmen so they stand out from the knights. Hope you like them.

Thank you all for your comments. I only have 12 Foot sergeants to go to complete my retinue, so I got side-tracked painting some foot knights......

I thought I'd have at least one bare-headed knight, so I used an old GW Mordheim head which fitted perfectly.
Hopefully I will complete the Sergeants within the next week or so.

Even topper job :D

The black and white colours with those shields are really striking. Really nice.
Any thoughts or planning for those Mongols yet ? :D
-
Superb. Love the bare headed figure.
-
these are just stunning
-
Thanks gents I've been really enjoying painting these.
Any thoughts or planning for those Mongols yet ? :D
Pretty much decided I will be getting some but I really want some Heavy Mongol Cavalry which will "fit" with the Fireforge ones. Fireforge a supposed to be releasing some but they have been saying that for ages.
Alternatively I really like the idea of building a Medieval Russian retinue using Gripping beast minis. If I do that I will get some Mongols anyway to use as horse archers.
Decisions....decisions.....

Gothic :o :-*

Another menacing looking unit. :D
-
They look like they have been through some hard fighting.
-
they look great, i always have a hard time with white but you've really pulled it off!
-
Those are effing brilliant!
-
What are you using for the Russians?
-
Gorgeous!
:-*
The weathering really brings them to life and enhances the black and white subject matter.

Excellent. Must follow! :)
-
Thanks for the comments gents!
What are you using for the Russians?
I've bought some Gripping Beast medieval Russians for the Mounted Druzhina ( 12 total) and some city militia (12) and some bowmen (12) from their Rus; Pagans to Princes range. I finished off with some Fireforge mounted Mongols to use as mounted yeoman.
I should be starting these shortly.

I really enjoyed doing these ( although I could do without painting white for a while!!!!)
As promised, I will be posting a Russian WIP thread shortly.

These are great! You are almost making me stray from my current Projects and start assembling my Fireforge Templars and Serjeants. :)
-
I especially like the shields on the foot sergeants: great weathering.
-
A very impressive force. Great weathering indeed.
-
These are stunning. Now' I'll have to look at your Russians ... and resist the urge to start a medieval project !!!
-
Absolutely fantastic stuff. 8) :-* 8) :-*
Its been great watching the progression of the army.
-
Fabulous work. Grimy and gritty. Absolutely brill.
-
Astonishing work! They look battered, menacing and realistic!
Though, I have an advice: repaint the movement trays in darker grey. It will look much better altogether!
-
Really lovely looking models well painted down and dirty just how they would look in battle!! :-*
You have inspired me to start a Lion Rampant army myself.
Fantastic pictures and thank you for sharing.

Excellent paintwork!! :-* :-*

Do you have any tips on how you did the mud effects (paint used, techniques, ect)? I love the look!
-
Stunning work! I bought a box of the infantry as they were on sale....now you have shown me what they can look like-WOW.. Can I ask where did you get the shield transfers? Thanks for sharing your pics they are so useful for me right now!

Thank you, I'm glad you like my work. All of the shield transfers were done by me and printed using clear transfer paper ( my wife has a laser printer for her business).
