Just to give idea of track size.

wow, not 0-gauge 32mm then? - the better
from above the train looks a bit smallish compared to the figures, but seems to do the job very well

maybe You have a shot from miniature eye level please? I would be curious to compare
I mean the train, not the track

THX very much

good playable "scale creep", same as the usual 28mm buildings, I would say

Fram, These same sets have been available in the US the last couple of Christmas seasons, I know the Hobby Town chain has carried them. Might be worth looking.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have ordered a set on-line from Poundstretcher. Free delivery if you spend over £20.

Whoo-hoo, my Poundstretcher set has arrived  :) :) :) Actually got two sets. One for grandson's Christmas present (and what a classic Christmas present it is with a lovely big box to wrap up) and one for me....! Getting two meant free delivery so I reckon the extra set (mine) only cost about a fiver - great value.

Now off to Giles blog to get some ideas although my wife is so impressed she wants me to set it up to play with...! Could be a while before I can start hacking it about.

That's another project I've got to get around to - making mine look a little more "British".

Indeed. It's getting confusing (and I'm partly to blame) - I don't know which forum to post my replies to.... :?  :D

I'm guessing that's the Tomy loco in your pic - looks good. Have you done much to it? And it's on the Poundstretcher track, is it?

How much 'straight' track do you get?
Title: Re: Poundstretcher Model train set
Post by: Tym on 02 December 2014, 09:33:37 AM
Must confess to have bought two sets (one had been reduced as the station was missing)  I do keep considering to buying another set just to get more track.  I cant give you a defined answer on how many straights you get I just felt getting two sets would fill a 8' x 4' board.

Thanks for that.
Ideally I need around 24' of straight track! :o
That's around 8.0m

Tim - you get 16 straights at 9" each = 12'. Also 5 sets of points which are made up of 9" of straight track and a standard curve. The number of straights you get is one of the big advantages of this set.

Got my first set today.
A shite model railway set, but superb value wargame scenery!!!
Anybody want to swop some of the rolling stock for straight track???
(I'll need to keep the engine and tender of course)

To be fair, I don't think it would claim to be a model railway set - definitely a toy train set and, at that price, not a bad one at all. But, as you say, for our purposes, a great value wargames scenery package.

Can't help with the straight track, I'm afraid - that was the main reason I bought it as well....

Is there not a model railway scale that will supply the right scale track?

Probably - someone will doubtless be along to tell us. But, it will be a lot more expensive than this set and really, for wargames purposes, this set is more than adequate.

The problem with that is model train tracks aren't usually in proportion to the train, ie. the tracks (and thus gauge of the model wheels) tend to be wider than they should be, to make it more stable.

My dad would be able to bore everyone into floods of tears on this subject, but there are lots of different gauges of railway throughout the world and historically it was even more varied. Unless you really want to research the correct gauge for the genre you're looking to model*, it might be an idea to just go with what looks nice to you.

*When I was looking to do WW1 Palestine and was looking for cheapo train sets for arabs to sabotage, my dad told me they use 1m narrow gauge, because the Turks mostly had old German rolling stock. That would be around 15mm wide tracks in 28mm scale - can you imagine how tiny that would look on the table?

Yes, as tiny as this:

anyway, there are a few topics on the railway board about scale and gauge, and also easy to find, the board is not too cluttered
