Title: Mochkirch - a SYW dawn attack scenario
Post by: olicana on 28 October 2014, 07:14:05 PM
Hi guys, I've just knocked up a SYW scenario for the lads. It is loosely based on Hochkirch 1758 and includes some simple notes for a random deployment by the attacker. There might be something in it for you.

I've just posted a battle report of this action on my blog. One of our players couldn't make it last night, so we treated the game as a one night testing session. It all worked rather well.

This morning I reset the battle for everyone to fight next week.

That is a fantastic looking terrain mat! Did you make that yourself or is it a commercially available product?

Cheers

Fuzzy, it's a Hainsworth billiard table baize which has been paint sprayed.

It is an expensive way to go (I managed to get my cloth free) new. You might get a second or perhaps an old one from a refurbished table. New, for 4m length, you are looking at £600+. Then you have to add the paint, I used about 20 tins on my 7m length.

Ouch! That is expensive but it does look great. I'll have to see what the price is like here in Oz.
Really kicking myself that I only bought one of the nice GW battlemat when they were for sale. I wish another company would release the same type of mat.

Cheers
Fuzzy

Well the action continues at Mochkirch - and it's going to be a typical Russian Prussian bloodbath. Here is a link to a report of lasts night's action:

And a couple of pics to whet your appetite.

Thanks, the buildings are home made. They are artists mounting board with cereal packet slate roofs. I actually need to rebase them on some 4mm ply (they are on art board at present) - like the ones below (I use MDF not card these days) - to give them some weight and strength, and to stop some slight warping. I like making buildings because it's different to painting figures every day. I'm glad you like them.

BTW, for those not in the know, 2mm MDF (which you can cut with a 'Stanley' knife) is cheap as chips by the sheet. You can buy it on line in reasonably sized pieces from picture framing suppliers (it's used as backing). Last time, I ordered it through my local art shop, I think I paid £23 for five sheets 4' x 3' (and because he got it from his normal suppliers there was no delivery charge). Warbases ( http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home (http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home) ) do a range of VERY USEFUL doors and windows (also cheap as chips) that cut down on lots of work. I reckon 28mm buildings cost as little as £3 each to make and finish.

Impressive...I would love to see a WIP making one of these buildings!!!

Interesting comments about the MDF...I will give it a try as I have a paper model house that I want to transfer to something durable.

It just so happens, that I'm about to make three or four new SYWish buildings. I've got the MDF, I've got the Warbases windows (very nice diamond paned ones) shutters and doors, etc. All I need to buy is some thin balsa strips from my guy down at the art shop for the 'panelling' because it's quicker than cutting thin lengths of card. The new buildings will all be thatched, though I have not decided if the new ones will be 'teddy fur' as per the old or 'towelling'. I've recently seen some of the latter and I like the 'look' - not realistic, but hell, we are talking impressionist war game figures / terrain here. I will buy some towel from Boyes and see how it goes - i'll just buy a meter so it will not break the bank, and if it goes wrong, so what.

Ioannis, as a full time professional figure painter to the more discerning client, I will not take painting lessons from you  lol. But, you are on. You paint it red and I'll build us a house to sin in - Hmmm, a brothel I think.

Good thing, I was referring to 'my way' of painting red and not to 'the only' way of painting red...

Perhaps, we do a 'red' house then................

It is gorgeous though.  I've seen cheaper baize online, but what is it about this stuff, the weight?  Also do you use it fuzzy side up or playing side up?  Brilliant work in the table, buildings and figures

Still amazed at the cloth table.  What paint scheme did you use on it?  And are you putting on a game at any shows anytime soon so I can come and have a 'fondle'  lol.....

I'll be at the York show in February if your there.

Thanks

Ignore the paint query. Have just discovered the joys of your blog. Brilliant stuff!

The advantage of baize cloth over felt is that baize is a tightly woven cloth rather than compressed together. It is therefore much thinner and goes over lumps (hills) better - even quite big lumps. Because the cloth is high quality (95% Merino wool) when you come to remove the lumps, even after a few weeks, the cloth goes flat again - it hasn't stretched. I always found that felt stretched, gradually moulding itself to the shape of previous lumps and wasn't able to be a basically flat surface any more - not a massive problem but, I didn't like it.

I use my cloth downside up. It is rougher and appears more 'grassy'. The 'grassyness' is the advantage. The disadvantage is that it probably doesn't hold the paint as well as the other side might (just guessing here) and the cloth needs to be resprayed periodically.

I've used all kinds of 'base terrain' in the past but this is the best all round solution I've found. All I need now is a beige one for desert terrain.
