Title: RT plastic beakies - now with general RT bits and bobs
Post by: Mr Kissyfur on 08 November 2014, 03:39:44 PM
I have a stack of plastic spacemarines, and I decided to start doing something with them. Having seen From The Warp's take on the RT era Howling Griffon camo, I thought I'd shamelessly nick the methods from here: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/space-marines-painted-in-camo-schemes.html

(If the owner of that brilliant website is a member of this board, thanks!)

I haven't done it justice, I'm sure.

I followed the steps in terms of basecoat, a wash of the ubiquitous Devlan Mud, then touched up the basecoat, then applied camo, then finally details (if the chapter insignia looks remotely ok it's more luck than judgment, that was a nightmare bit of freehand)

However, I feel it's missing something, and with just the wash and the basecolour touchup it looks a little flat - I've never been too sure of how to highlight camo schemes - any ideas on what else I could do to improve the camo?

Now THAT is a plastic Space Marine!  Nice work, and kudos on the classic SM.  Had that kit when I were a teenager, which someone still produced them.

It looks fine to me, sir.
In fact, it looks very similar as to how I intend to paint my own RT marines when I get around to them.
(Only because that is the ideal camo colours for my existing scenery.... ;)).

Nice work!

A proper space marine,  before they were pimped out of all recognition. Nice job on the painting.

Yup like that. I had a 'covert' space wolves squad with rhino in a similar camo, (inspired by a piece of artwork from the book of the astronomicon (i think) where a squad were in cover in waiting to ambush a mounted ork force) back in the day.

again nice mate

Excellent.  Looks much better than any of the Howling Griffons I painted :)

Thanks all. I'm cleaning up another 4 to make the remainder of a half squad today - 3 more bolters and a flamer marine. Will post something once I've made some progress...

Apologies for the rubbishy photos... I will try to take some with a proper camera and in daylight - might be more flattering!

Those are awesome! I love the old school feel of RT era space marines, and you've captured them perfectly.

Excellent! :-* My favorite chapter in their cool camo colours. Back when Space Marines were still highly trained killers, instead of ambulatory jewelry shops...
Love the bases too, by the way!

Thank you for your kind words!

In a fit of motivation, I decided to start putting together some heavy support for the Marines, a couple of commissars for a laugh, plus trying out a few greenskins - (mostly) assembled and primed:

The metal orks from this era are quite brilliant. The plastic box set which was a counterpart to the marines is effing terrible though - the chappy on the right is from that. They're all squatting even more oddly than the marines, have terrible mould lines, and they don't assemble well. I have quite a few...

I have a bunch of IG guys, including the two commissars, but I've lost pretty much all of the plastics, so I now don't have enough arms or weapons to finish the couple of metal command sections I have. Mind you, I no longer have any plastic IG for them to be in command of, so what the hey...

Good stuff. Agree those plastic orks are some of the worst miniatures GW ever released.
