Title: 8000 points on the table! A Kings of War Battle report.
Post by: eilif on November 10, 2014, 02:48:31 PM
Had quite a bit of fun with a massive KoW battle at our club's last meeting.
In order to make use of a 6x10 table, We met at FLGS instead of our usual meeting at a member's home.
I had the pleasure of allying my 2000 points of bad guys (Mostly using KoM and Abbysal Dwarves) with my fellow LA member PatrickWR's 2000 points of Undead.  We faced off against 3 members playing the good guys. Another LA member Timlilig fielded 2000 points of mostly nature, and two others each fielded 1000 points of dwarves.  As reflects our taste in models and collecting habits, the models represent a wide variety of miniatures with a dozen or more brands represented, unified mostly by theme, paint-scheme and basing.

You can read the whole report -as written by the undead player) with lots of pics, here on our blog:

Suffice to say, I had a great time. I only get to play KoW a few times a year, and I've lost almost every time, and yet it's one of my favorite games.  Obviously there's lots of depth I haven't explored yet, but the rules are streamlined and easy enough to learn that I never feel like I'm struggling with them when I do get a game in. This game also had two first-timer KoW players who each controlled 1000 points of Dwarves and they seemed to grasp the rules as good (in some cases better) than I did.  Not a victory for me, but definitely another win for the KoW rules!

A few pics to tempt you to view the full report which has many more!

Nice battle report.

Brilliant that you could field such a varied selection of miniatures too, adds to the visual  a lot.

And shows how nice it is to have flexibility in the models you can use with the rules to.

A great battle report!  It is a slick and bloody game, isn't it?

And lot of great minis on the table.  Love the undead dragons (the Reaper Bones Nethyrmaul is huuuuuuuge), and the thing I saw in a couple of the pics with rainbow wings.

Lastly, I heartily approve of your collecting strategy, it's exactly what I do :)  And I also like your loose approach to basing - round, square, get 'em all on unit bases and they're fine.

Thanks folks,

Motomaro,
You can see more pics of the Bones Dragon in PatrickWR's thread.  I assume timlilig will be along some time regarding the rainbow winged dragon, possibly a cotyl?

Not that we'd do it differently anyway, but we definitely appreciate that the rules don't require you have the exactly number or basing of miniatures as long as the overall footprint of the unit is the right size.

Tactalvantic,
Glad you liked it. The club is definitely all about collecting a wide variety of minis.  We only play painted minis, but as long as it's a good representation of the unit/statline, we try not to impose any other limitations.

Elbows,
If you look through the Blog post, you'll see that much of my Chaos army is Battlemasters miniatures.
Chaos Knights as Knights
Chaos Warriors as Spear Phalanx
Beastmen as Abbysal Bezerkers
Chaos archers as Missile troops

Not the best figs in the world, but they paint up quick and really look good ranked up.  The addition of emblems (mostly from skaven and skeleton sprues) to the shields of the various units really helped them too, IMHO. Most folks with GW armies will have tons of extra bits, so it's cheap and easy to source the decorative various bits you might need to add some detail to the shields.

The rainbow winged creature is a cockatrice.  I'm not sure of the manufacturer, I got it second hand.  It might be from Marauder Miniatures.

Thanks for that - I really just meant to say that I like the paintjob on the wings!

As the undead player in this game, let me just echo was ordinarybass said about how wonderful KOW is for the few times per year we play it. In fact, this game made me want to play a little bit more often! My dwarves received reinforcements recently...
