Title: Victorian villain sculpt, The Man Who Grins
Post by: Vermis on 12 November 2014, 06:06:26 PM
Taken a while, but here he is, bleeding-edge alternate head and everything.

As with the Gentleman Bat, casts will be up for limited sale in a while; but I'll let the other guys take charge of that. :)

He's who Bill Finger based the Joker on.  Fascinating movie.  "The Man Who Laughs".  Great sculpt.  Love the obscurity!

Spot on! The inspiration for the sculpt was indeed Mr Veidt. A small group of LAFers have funded this sculpt and we hope to get it cast up. As with the Gentleman Bat figure (or one of the many names it got called) we hope to sell some casts to partially recover our sculpting and casting costs and perhaps to help fund a further sculpt. Unlike the previous sculpt we don't want to piss people off by not having enough figures, etc. So, taking a leaf from Blind Beggar Miniatures' guru and LAFer Mason, we will look to ask for interest and try and provide enough figures to meet that interest. A big plus this time is that we are retaining control of the master. We will open up a separate thread to gauge interest.

Vermis is just finalising some of the detail on this, but the idea is that as we will retain control of the green we will be able to get as many as we want. The last one was something of a learning experience!

We still need to get a production mould made, which will take a little time. We are getting some expert assistance though! We're not totally sure what we will have in terms of Gentleman Bat numbers but we may have a few.

How close are we to an actual order?  in addition to Conrad I would also like the Gentleman.

It's not really an order system as such, remember we're just a group of gamers across 5 countries trying to get a few special figures made!  :) The interest is greatly appreciated though!

Hey guys I'm just putting out a little information for the group so here goes:

For everyone asking, we're working on getting some more Gentleman Vigilantes casted up with Grins so there should be some available down the road. we'll of course keep you all posted.

As far as the ordering process is going please just bear with us. We're not a company. As Elk so wonderfully put it we're a couple of guys on the board spread across a few countries who got together & decided to make some minis that we wanted to see & hoped other people would like too. Warren (Vermis) our sculptor has been a huge help, he's a true talent & we're lucky to have him on board. So, using the lessons we learned from the first minis sale we're hoping this one will go a lot smoother. The Prof. was also a big help in moving this whole little experiment along so a huge thank you there.

As for the future...we were quite inspired by the alternate head that Warren made for Grins (how cool is that  :-*). The next (down the road, we don't have the resources to move too fast here...) will be an alternate version/sculpt of the Gentleman Vigilante, an older, more grizzled version. He's been gone for a while & has returned older & wiser. After that Spring Heeled Jack has been thrown about (How are there not, like a dozen minis of him by now?), maybe "Mr. Janus the dock boss" a leather clad mistress, these are just a few ideas and there will be some wildcards in there for as long as this keeps going.

We would really like to thank everyone for the interest & attention. The fact is we can't make new stuff if nobody buys, all the money made from these sales just goes straight into the next sculpt. They're all made at a financial loss, the key thing for all of us is that the new out of pocket costs aren't too great. So, keep watching & if you know anyone else who would like our minis let them know where to find them & get on the list!

Along with Mr. Janus and the (Cat)Mistress, what about a fiendish criminal Master of Conundrums? A Gentlewoman Vigilante? Mr. Curse, his physique enhanced to terrifying proportions after being afflicted by a powerful venom? :)

I like the way you think, sir. Only (tiny) problem is that was the theme I imagined for Mr. Janus. :)

Also, now that I've got me laptop back I can show off these final photos, after some small modifications to reduce scale creep and bring him more in line with the bat.

And how people should get him. (only a bit more silvery)

How are thinsg progressing with the Man Who Grins? :)

I should receive the masters very, very soon and then we'll be sending them off for a production mould to be made. After that it's cast, cast, cast. We're looking at enough runs to cover the existing list plus a decent amount of extras (we want some for ourselves afterall!  :D).

As we said before,  this isn't about making money for us, it's about trying to recover costs as much as possible and putting money towards the next sculpt. It's all just our own cash put up front for some figures we'd like to see.

Would people like to see more figures after this?

Cheers

Following some discussion on Goon's part with the original caster who had the rights (and with whom nothing would have happened without their assistance), we will be getting a small number of new Bats. I'm having to use my own figures as masters for this (luckily I hadn't painted them) so we won't have many per spin.

Hey guys, I do have some extra Vigilantes that we'll be able to send out, I have already contacted some folks who didn't get one in his origional thread & they'll have first dibs, I haven't sent them out yet because I'm hoping that Grins will be done soon & they can all be posted in one shot. That said I think we should be able to accommodate everyone. I'll update the order post (pg. 3) on Monday but everyone do me a favor, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR NUMBERS ARE RIGHT & YOU'VE SPECIFIED IF YOU WANT BOTH MINIS! I don't want anyone left in the cold. I'm sure we'll have news on the casting very soon. The sooner we get this done the sooner we can start on the next one!

Ok guys, I think the list is up to date. Look at your name it breaks down like this:

Name + 1 (Grins)/1 (Vigilante)

Please make sure the #'s are right & sound off in the thread if they're wrong!

At my count we currently need 80 Grins & 14 Vigilantes!
Title: Re: Victorian villain sculpt, The Man Who Grins
Post by: Elk101 on 03 March 2015, 07:49:52 PM
80 Grinners?!  Bloody hell! I'm guessing we want some for ourselves too lads?  lol We might need about 100 at this rate.

On a more serious note, as we are paying for all this up front out of our own pockets we can't really afford to cast more than we need. If anyone has changed their minds please let us know. We're not a company, just guys enjoying getting some special figures made! I'm genuinely going to have to ask to up the spins to cover the list. It is, however,  brilliant that so many people share our little group's desire to see figures like this made. Vermis has outdone himself with the Grinner,  what will he do with the next one? (no pressure mate!)

Thanks everyone.

Ok, sorry for the delay with this, I have the figures and I've had two family deaths in a short space of time so this has dropped into the background. I apologise for the time this has taken.

The US and Canada bound figures have left for Goon3423.

The list below covers Europe. The mainland European figures will be sent to Comsquare for cheaper delivery as I need to send him his figures anyway. If you can confirm your location if it's not shown,  that would be great. The first number refers to the Bat figure, the second the Grinner.

Baby Face Nelson 1/1 UK
Wulfgar22 1/2 UK
Bluenova 1/1

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear about your sad news. :'(

You have me down as a question mark for the grinner? he is a definite must have for me, I said yes to him at the start. My request is buried somewhere in the preceeding pages. (I am in the UK as you should know. ;))

Any chance to upgrade to a 1/1 (adding a bat), if any left ?

Thanks guys. I only mention it by way of explaining the delay in me sending them out. I know I've kept everyone waiting.

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is if you're in the UK or Ireland just pm me with your address. If you're in mainland Europe pm Comsquare,  if you're in Portugal pm Predatorp. Assuming the other guys are ok with that? I have to send them their figures anyway.

Cheers

:D Very interested to see how you (and everyone else) paint him up and use him in games. Don't forget that the dagger blade and quillons should be relatively easily replaced with a length of metal or styrene rod, for a handy cane. (Or a pin for a sword cane, for that matter.) I'll have to try it on one of my copies, see just how easy I made it.

I'll be sending the Continental European and environs figures to Comsquare at the end of the week so this is the last call to let me know what you want. I daresay if the odd few are missed I can send them directly as I'm doing with a handful of N American LAFers.

I've just stumbled across this thread, is it too late to get The Grinning Man, or is he still available?  (I'm in the UK if that makes a difference.)

Haven't heard back from Comsquare since PM-ing him my address some time ago.

I take it he's vacationing or something like that? No rush; just checking, as more and more painted versions are slowly appearing... ;)

We had a lot of people who were going to get back to me so it was a few weeks before I had as list of figure numbers to post to Germany. They should be there by now but Comsquare is currently away on business. Sorry for the delay with this.

This will be at the 15th of august :)

Just checking in: what is the best way to ensure inclusion in future plans with this project? I have the first two and would not want to miss out on friends or foes for them!

BTW, any ranges that owners have found scale very well with the first two minis?

Look out on this board for the Vs - Victorian Vigilantes and Villains by Vermis. lol

Part of the brief for the first sculpt was that it should scale with Empire of the Dead minis. I bought the Holmes and Watson blister from that game for reference, before starting. While the first bat isn't huge compared to some 30-32mm minis, he's relatively chunky compared to West Wind's Holmes!

Just in case anyone was thinking about picking up any of these, it looks like we are almost completely out of Gentleman Bat figures on the current run. It also looks like we're down to less than 20 Grinners.

Comsquare should be in a position to start sorting out Continental European orders soon. I know he's busy at the moment so I don't want to speak out of turn.

I was very kindly sent a PM about these, but I was distracted by other things at the time and rudely failed to reply. :?

If there are any still left, I'd love a Grinner and Gentlemen Bat please.

I still have the PM I think, and am happy to respond to that if it's still 'current'? :-)

Major, the pm is still current though we now only have Grinners left following a few purchases yesterday.

Ah, shame I missed out on Bats! Still, it's my own fault.  :?

I've responded to the PM about the Grinner, and if a copy of Bats happens to be available later, please do let me know. :)

Also, thank you to all involved! ;)
