Title: Scenario ideas
Post by: chrisw on 15 November 2014, 07:28:03 AM
Hi all,
Just trying to pick everyone's brains for ideas.  I am the only one who likes supers in my local area so am forced to play solo.  Key to this, I feel, is having some sort of scenario or mission to stop each game degenerating into a slugfest.  The idea would be that each does not rely too much on specialised terrain - the odd building or vehicle or Npc figure is fine but a whole specialised board is maybe not.  I have a few ideas myself that I will list below but am interested to hear other people's ideas that I can work up into a solo game.
1) bank robbery. One side is the robbers, the other must stop them escaping with the loot tokens. Vault has a damage / tech rating that robbers must overcome which means some characters will be busy while others have to delay the interfering force.

2)security van heist. Like bank robbery except that it is mobile and there are pros and cons in this for each side

3)kidnap - lots of variations for this one - either kidnap an npc or a member of the other side. Active side could be either protecting npc or trying to take them off board

4)assassinate - one group has to assassinate an npc whilst other has to kill them.  Special rule could be that if a superhero is in base to base contact with victim then they can take the hit instead of victim giving the problem of separating them before trying the hit

5)copy DNa either of npc or super.  Victim must be imobilised or down for a set time with figure in contact to get a sample.  Maybe even a copy of thought patterns are being sort so target needs to be conscious and, in the case of a more Fragil npc, not dead.

6) kill the leader. Both sides are trying to kill the leader of the other group. Everything else is secondary.

7) rescue a fellow super or an npc from some situation.break into a building, compound etc.

8 ) race to capture some alien tech which will immediately give the controlling character a big advantage.

Any thoughts on these ideas or other suggestions would be much appreciated as in all game systems variety is the spice of life😊
Regards,
Chris

Looks like a good start, I'll be stealing the Armoured Car robbery idea.

If I may ask, what's keeping your local group from joining in? Is it time, the system, having to buy new figures? What games do they already play and enjoy?

It took me a little while to get some other supers players at my club, but it was worth a little cajoling and prodding.

It's certainly not having to buy new figs as I have about 150 repainted herocliks ! 😀 .  Just don't think it's their thing. We all have lots of interests and most overlap, such as ancients, pulp alley, dark ages (the list goes on.....) but there is the occasional game that just one person is keen on so its solo or just move on and I am reluctant to do that if i can figure out how to make solo games more interesting.

9 ) hunt for a hidden super.  A superhero/ villain is hidden somewhere on the board and in possession of important info. Both groups search for him/her but they won't come quietly.once found If they are not in contact with an adversary they run in a random direction.

Chris

I didn't come up with this idea, but the "Retrieve a Valuable Item" scenario works well for supers, I think.  There are 3 (or more for a longer game) tokens spaced out evenly on the board.  Can be in buildings, rubble, rough terrain, trees, etc. When either side retrieves a token, dice to see if it is the "valuable item."  (Obviously, if they get to the last token, that one has to be it). Players have to make a decision about which tokens to go for, not knowing whether it will turn out to be the right one...

I have a whole category I call Demolition Man. It includes games where one side is trying to destroy a building of some kind, and the other is tying to prevent it. Some scenarios I have played out:

1. How to Kill a City
The villains are trying to destroy an industrial complex of some kind, resulting in a poison cloud that will kill tens of thousands of innocent civillians.

2. Midtown Meltdown
Same as above, but they are trying to destroy a nuclear reactor resulting in a nuclear explosion.

3. Monumental Disaster
One side is trying to destroy a monument or other valuable structure; while the other side is trying to prevent it.

4. Towering Inferno
Villains are trying to burn down and destroy a hi-rise--as a distraction. The heroes are trying to prevent the catastrophe.

All of these have elements of random environmental hazards--poisonous gases, radiation, fires, explosions, etc. Also, the idea of civilians that need to be saved. They are fun to play.

Another fun category I play with something called What if--those really wacky plot lines where some extradimensional force results in players randomly swapping 1-2 characters, randomly nullifying characters, gaining powers, etc.

Just some ideas.

:) I like all of these ideas.  I will add them to my list.  here are some more i thought of today.
10 ) storage wars. one side has to search for items in a series of storage rooms and gains vps for finding/getting them off board whilst other side only gets points for putting other side's characters out of fight.

11 ) medical aid - one side has character(s) needing medical aid. need to get them to hospital before other side can attack them.  other side come on in random places.  my initial thought on this would have been going to a hospital and taking d4 turns to be returned to full health. however, if injured character is energy based 'hospital' could be electrical substation.

12 ) monster rampage - large monster is on a rampage around built up area (let loose by villains).  villains are encouraging it to do more damage by wounding it (each damaging attack will increase the amount of damage creature does)  hero group has to subdue monster before it causes a preset amount of damage to surroundings.  each successful tranquilizing/subduing damage attack reduces damage it causes.  on activation, monster will attack building or super- whichever is nearest.

13 ) a street gang raid a gun store and a small group of heroes try and intervene. however, store is a front for alien tech and they are getting a big upgrade!

14) the death machine - villains setting up a doomsday device in the middle of the board. Heroes arrive at random on random sides of the board.  they need to disable machine before villains set it off.

15)  drugbust gone bad.  heroes disrupt a drug bust by a street gang when evil super bosses turn up to retrieve their investment.

16) mysterious egg.  an egg/cocoon is found in a downtown area and is about to open in d10 + variable turns.
eg if a 5 is rolled,  on turn 6 there is 10% chance of hatching, next turn 20% etc.  when it hatches alien will imprint on which ever hero is closest to the cocoon and join their team for future games.

will post more as they occur to me.

chris

12. Monster Rampage

That can be a fun scenario. I played one similar where the heroes/villains were responding to a downed UFO. When they arrived a giant robot emerges--it was a Marvel Legends Sentinel. Each round, each player had a turn controlling the sentinel. It was a lot of fun.

I have a sentinel too - hadn't thought to use that.  It might now join my repaint/ rebase list.
The list, however, has just taken a big hit though as I have just ordered a few (about 130!) dc  herocliks to add to the collection lol

17). Military escort. Heroes have to escort 3(?) vehicles from one side of the board to the other across town. Bad guys have to stop as many vehicles as possible. Damaged trucks could still be pushed by bricks on their activation but would leave themselves open to attack. Do the Heroes save the still mobile ones or try and drag/carry the damaged ones?

Our new Vice Alley book has a bunch fun scenarios that would easily work for superhero games/campaign. My favorites is "Social Affair" but "The Heist" is a close second.

I have the rules and most supplements and find them really fun.  I have been considering how to use plot points in a supers solo game.  They lend themselves to a specific style of scenario but still leave the problem of how the non played team react.  I think I will have to move on from game theorising and just play through a few ideas and see how they come together in practise.

18) a game within a game.  Using another scenario, alter it by having a sentinel arrive. All models must attack sentinel using strongest attack. Gain one (seperate) vp for each damage done to it but lose one for for each model not attacking it this round.  Sentinel will attack greatest threat based on damage done to it that round. Sentinels are a threat to all mutant kind and need to be dealt with.  When it is beaten the original scenario carries on as normal but a countdown starts to the arrival of the next ( I only have one sentinel model but overlapping countdowns could be fun if you have more than one). Vps gained from this in game game are used as a bonus in recruitment/ loss of models to team. Only highest vp team gets a bonus, other side gets a negative modifier

19) a cult of non supers are summoning a demon by sacrificing a superhero. Villains are trying to protect the cult to allow sacrifice to happen and will recruit the demon, the heroes try to save the victim in the hope of recruiting them.  The cult are flimsy but have more members than are needed for the sacrifice so can afford to lose a few. Ceremony could be on top of a tall building in the middle of the board.  The end of ceremony could be at random or a count down clock or mixture of both.

One I've been toying with is to use QR codes to make "mystery crates" that have to be grabbed. You may only have time to grab, one or two, but are they the right ones? Maybe it's a Plutonium shipment mixed in with regular grade arms. Maybe the rare alien artifact is mixed in with the shipment of ordinary ancient Egyptian artifacts.

You can find QR code generators all over the place. Quick search found this one. http://www.qr-code-generator.com/?PID=100&gclid=CjwKEAiA4_WjBRCNgf7A_KeE9jwSJADtegYdt36M0fJ4VlMOuXLms9m1m80YyJKipBwGHgb14oFWihoCHl7w_wcB

I like to use just plain text with a description of what the item is. Just use your smartphone to scan the code and then you have a mystery until the end.

I like that idea.  I down loaded a qr code reader for my phone a while back and never really found much use for it.  I should try this idea out before I delete the app!

Have also done it for Gladiatorial/Hunger Games type combat where you have random weapons around the arena, but you don't know what you're getting until you pick it up.
