Title: Expedition to the Tandoor valley, NW Frontier 1880
Post by: guitarheroandy on 16 November 2014, 07:01:17 PM
Today, Mrs Guitarhero left me and Guitarhero Jr alone for the day as she was off to meet some old school friends for lunch...great excuse for a game, we thought!

So out came the NW Frontier models for a skirmish! This was also the first outing for the Pathan watchtower that Jimbibbly made for me..Hurrah!!

The table was set at 6 x 4 feet and used most of my NW Frontier hill terrain. The scenario was this:

Captain Carruthers had been despatched to the Tandoor valley to destroy a watchtower that the Tandooris used to defend the neck of a pass that led to the main tribal lands. He took a company of the 6th Sikhs and one of the 11th (Cambridgeshire) Foot. Opposing him was a skeleton force of Tandooris in the vicinity of the tower, with other groups arriving according to dice rolls. Also, as I don't yet have enough tribesmen painted, any 'killed' tribesmen would reappear on a roll of 4+ on a d6. In order to win, Capt Carruthers had to destroy the tower and exit the table from whence he came accompanied by at least 50% of the starting force.

The rules were loosely based on GW's LoTOW, but I made up most of it as i went along.

Deployment...British advance in column screened by skirmishers, as the Tandooris rush to defend their post.

All quiet in the surrounding hills...for now!!!
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg4_zps4a0bbf61.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg4_zps4a0bbf61.jpg.html)

The British begin to deploy for the attack. Guitarhero Jr is pointing out that the Pathan in the tower doorway will shortly be toast!

Reinforcements arrive (I threw 2 6s out of 3 throws  in turn 3, allowing two more Tandoori groups to deploy!!!)

The reinforcements advance...

The 11th Foot approach the tower while the Sikhs halt to give fire to the Ghazis advancing past the house...(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zpsc3790b28.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zpsc3790b28.jpg.html)

It's all going well...

(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zps88eef3ce.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zps88eef3ce.jpg.html)

The 11th Foot reach the tower!!(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg12_zpsc3121923.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg12_zpsc3121923.jpg.html)

Carruthers sets the explosives..time to go!!!(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg13_zps6f6cfba4.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg13_zps6f6cfba4.jpg.html)

Now the withdrawal begins!(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg14_zpsb58dc8ac.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg14_zpsb58dc8ac.jpg.html)

The tower has exploded, showering all within 6" in debris. Two Tandooris die, one is klnoced down and one British soldier is also knocked over by the blast!
Classic frontier withdrawal...the Tandooris can't quite get near enough...(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zpsf476cb89.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zpsf476cb89.jpg.html)

Most of the officers are wounded, but nonetheless, they make their escape!(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg16_zps70fa4586.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg16_zps70fa4586.jpg.html)

Touch and go...(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad276/guitarheroandy/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zps5a19442e.jpg) (http://s943.photobucket.com/user/guitarheroandy/media/NW%20Frontier%20Afghanistan%201880/imagejpg1_zps5a19442e.jpg.html)

Luckily, Captain Carruther won the initiative roll in the next turn and everybody escaped! If he hadn't won that roll, the chances are he would have lost at least one man, thereby reducing him below the 50% he needed to win!

As it was, a great win to the British! The game played out well in classic frontier style. The Brits destroyed their target but were hard pushed in the withdrawal...just as it should have been!!!

We had a blast!!

(Oh...and isn't the tower great!!)

Must be hot as hell in that valley.

Really good AAR, thanks for sharing. I'm sure I've seen that tower before somewhere... but where? Was it cut down from some sort of wizard's domicile? :)

Very nice  :)
That tower turned out very well (shame about the bright blue interior, but it's not like Bibbles is a professional you know... ;))

KIDDING!

It all looks lovely. Makes me want to get my NW Frontier stuff out. In fact, I think I will... Game anyone?  ;)

Thanks for the report! The figures and terrain look great, and it's fun to see you getting your son into the game.

So glad you all like it!

Excellent stuff. ;D

Whats your Kharki recipe for the Brits?

For the 11th Foot, it is Foundry Drab in the usual 3 layers. For the Sikhs (and everything else in khaki that's coming soon) it's Foundry Drab light, washed with Army Painter Strong Tone dip and then highlighted back up with the Drab light. Works a treat! I'll try to post some pics of the Sikhs when I get a moment. The Brits are already on here somewhere way back in the mists of the Colonial Threads. The officers are in the recent Colonial painting expedition somewhere...

Very nice! I've been strongly considering Interwar ("Jazz Age") NWF as my next project now that my Russian Civil War stuff has reached a bit of a still point, and stuff like this is pushing me hard, even if you are forty-fifty years too early - one of the fascinating things about that part of the world is the "more things change the more they stay the same" vibe!
