Title: Temple of Time
Post by: Theomar Pius on 03 September 2008, 07:56:49 AM
http://www.coolminiornot.com/199915

Drawing inspiration from Kylemore Abbey in Ireland, and the Legend of Zelda series of video games, this is my version of the Temple of Time.
Mostly built to fit in my village, it would also be suitable for both fantasy, historic, or even modern wargames settings. This project was started last November, and worked on here and there between then and now. I stopped work on it around Christmas, and picked it back up in the spring, only to stop again to focus on other projects. I wavered a bit on the design and how I would actually carry it out, which is why it took so lng to get into motion. Mostly I didn't know how to do the windows, and wasn't happy with the design of the actual building, which changed several times. Eventually I nailed down what I wanted, and am quite happy with the results.

More pics on my fotki page.

Bloody hell, Theomar! That's quite extraordinary.

Do you make technical plans of your projects before you build? In case you do, would you be able to share some pdfs?

You know, I was just thinking 'maybe I should get around to building some scenery', and then you post this picture and it depresses the hell out of me! It's superb, one of the best buildings I've seen in ages. Taking the photo outside in the sun with the trees in the background really lifts it, too.

Is that the Hasslefree Tiriel mini at the bottom right, hands in prayer in front of the statue? Nice touch, very atmospheric.

I'll never scratch-build anything again....  :'( :'( :'(

What materials did you use, the stonework is quite amazing...?

I can only second oxiana - depressing for those of us who are too lazy (or just unable) to do something like this. This sure is one of the nicest models I've seen!

You know what I actually thought at first that was a photo of a real cathedral you were using then realised as the image sunk in that it was your model.

That is quite brilliant. ;D

I am definately not posting my buildings on this forum as they are and will be soooooooooo inferior. ::)

well done. :-*

That has to be the most impressive wargaming building I have ever seen. Like others i thought the first shot was your reference photo before studying it.

Amazing!

I thought the first pic was a photo of the Irish Abbey to. That is quite excellent. Your scratch building Medi Clorians leave Vader in the shade. lol 8)

I'd prefer if I inspired people to build more, not less :'(

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'll see if I can field some questions.

Is that the Hasslefree Tiriel mini at the bottom right, hands in prayer in front of the statue?
Yes indeed, my first Hasslefree too. I thought she was perfect for the church.

Do you make technical plans of your projects before you build? In case you do, would you be able to share some pdfs?
I honestly don't plan this stuff out ahead of time. That's actually how this one took so long, the design kept changing until it looked right to me. I'm blessed and cursed with a photographic memory. I se the project in my head before I start, and that's the only plan I go on. I'll think of something I want to do with it, and even if I don't get to it for a while, I'll come back and remember that's what I wanted to do.
I do however work with a few rules. I use 2" as my standard story for buildings. That's roughly 8-10" for Reaper minis. The other rule is don't let the fact that something will be hard to pull off stop you from trying it. The techniques that I use are not all that difficult, I picked them up years ago from Black Gobbo. But pushing myself to do harder and harder designs have really elevated my game.

Here is a wip thread for this building.

Okay, let me get that straight:
1. you took foamboard and just drew the outline of a wall on it

2. you cut the wall out

3. you drew the stinework on the foamboard

4. Glued it together and that's it???

How did you achive all the little noocks and recesses (e.g. the door on your photo is set deeper than the wall itself. Did you cut that out as well or did you use various layers of foamboard?

Your second posting here gave me some hope that I might at least do something that could at least look halfway decent. Okay, given time and some idea what I want to build but I'll come to that some other time (hopefully).

Yep.

2. you cut the wall out
Yep.

3. you drew the stinework on the foamboard
Yep. Then scored it with a sharp xacto, then ran a pencil through the cuts to open them up. Pressing a rock into the foam creates the texture.

4. Glued it together and that's it???
Pretty much.

How did you achive all the little noocks and recesses (e.g. the door on your photo is set deeper than the wall itself. Did you cut that out as well or did you use various layers of foamboard?
I draw the arch, cut it out, and glue the piece that was cut out back in the same place, slightly recessed. That's actually how I do all of the doors as well.

Your second posting here gave me some hope that I might at least do something that could at least look halfway decent. Okay, given time and some idea what I want to build but I'll come to that some other time (hopefully).
Look forward to seeing the results.

I was just just looking at the WIP thread you had for this beauty on the Custom Hobby Forum - I really like your technique for stained glass - that's a nice trick, very clever.

But I also looked back at your original post here, and how you said it was built for your village. Village?!? Heaven help us if you ever start work on a city, we might as well all just turn out the lights and good home...

The doors, and the round windows, are all made from earrings. Just make sure that when you are at the store, you look at EVERYTHING! You never know what might come in useful.

I also did a much more extensive wip on a different project if you want to check that out as well.
