About a year ago I talked with Zafarelli about how cool it would be to have a fantasy tavern for gaming brawls in. Later on, I once again browsed through the page of imbrianarts.com (http://imbrianarts.com/), pondering what to order from them to add to he lead mountain.
A few days later, Zafarelli sent me link a link to their Beer and D6s game, they had uploaded:
http://www.imbrianarts.com/beer%20and%20d6s/play/index.html (http://www.imbrianarts.com/beer%20and%20d6s/play/index.html)
That was all it took to finally decide to order stuff from them no matter what! The rules were exactly what I was looking for!
The other project I was involved in somehow lost its momentum so I took a break from painting more and more undead and started construction on this small skirmish game. One of the first Ideas I had was that it would have been nice to have all that stuff happening inside of an old barrel, cut it in half perhaps? I browsed the net for used barrels and even asked around at breweries but to no success. Most of them would have been to large and heavy and all of them were simply too expensive.
A colleague mentioned having noticed a roughly barrel-shaped flower pot somewhere, and Ifound this on the web:

I used the saw in the picture to cut the top off(which I will be using as the pub walls) and put the bottom on my head.
I used some leftover wood cut in a threequarter-circle as a base and refined the shape with a carpet knife. The plastic seems to be some kind of vinyl, so it really was easy to manipulate:

In my mind, the inside walls of the pub had to be covered with some kind of trappings(Is that the right word?), but it had to be flexible because of the flimsyness of the flower-pot material. I found some structured wallpaper that completely matched my ideas and glued it to the inside with silicon.
After that, I began cutting up balsa wood for the wooden floor planking:

Timberwork made of wooden strips was added to the wall:
I added some more timberwork and details and a strip from a picture frame to be the frontal border to the game. Then, I flour-bombed everything:

While doing so, I flour-bombed the furniture as well:

I hope I can post some more pictures in the next few days... :)

You tease you! :D

This is looking pretty nice. I am really digging the 'tavern-in-a-barrel' idea.

This handsome new hat style shall forever now be known as 'The Vikotnik'. lol
-
That is an INSPIRED IDEA! The W.I.P. photos suggest an INCREDIBLY COOL piece in the making. This a thread to follow intently. GREAT WORK!
If it doesn't work out for scenery, it is a very becoming as a hat.
-
The walls on that flowerpot look pretty thin -- how hard was it to cut up?
I love the idea of a round tavern, and that one is looking pretty nice already!
-
You can not build just a simple game board eh ?
;)

Thanks, DeafNala! Coming from you, I really dig this comment!

It is quite flimsy, rather soft and easy to cut. I would say it's made from 3-4mm strong vinyl. I could have cut it with a carpet knife all the way, but the saw was more fun. ;D

Looks great.
How did you do the "flour-bombing"?

That's a Term that came up during Zafarelli's Hak Nam thread on this forum. It just means priming. I always prime black, then spray white on the whole thing to define contrast.

Looks nice, I gotta try that.

Incredibly good as always mate, the concept from start to finish (which I've already seen :D ) always amazes me on any of your projects 8) 8) 8)
Replied to your pm as well with more incoming over the next few days :)
cheers

I really like the use of that flower pot as the base of the project. Kudos. :)

I like where you are going with this, sir.

I am sure you will have a few surprises for the rest of us, though.... ;)

That reminds me that I still want to send you a pic of that minotaur I painted. Gotta get my arse up to make the photo first... ::)
Thank you very much for the nice comments, guys...!
I found out that there is a german beer called 'Faust' down there in the south. I knew instantly that I needed a bar towel as a dice mat. Bar towels are not used(Or at least very uncommon...) in Germany because of some silly law, so look what I have bought on ebay from a british store:
I started painting the outside first, I primed it very irregularly, so that was easily sorted using washes only:
...and the inside got painted, too:
When everything was finished, I decided that the floor should look a bit grimy in a proper tavern. So I added some stains:
I highlighted some of the edges to have more of a 3D effect, it had to look used, grimy, bleached and worn; all at the same time:
The furniture was painted using some drybrush and washes. I put them in the tavern to see if some adjustments were needed regarding the colours. After that, it looked something like this:

A tavern needs some kind of sign with the name on it. Being one of my projects, it had to be a moon, so I sculpted some moon plaque and the name for the tavern was found:
THE WICKED MOON
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/19/173_23_11_14_6_49_11_1.jpg)
That's it for now, hope I can make some more photos next week.
:)

That wooden floor ist one of the best painted i have ever seen. :-*
VERY well done!
-
The moon looks like Billy Idol. Total magnificent project, superb. THE CID.
-
Bloody brilliant so far, and the sculpting on that sign is top drawer.
:-* 8) :-*
-
Simply stunning Karsten. The moon plaque is sublime :)
-
FANTASTIC progress! The wood floor is STUNNING; & I LOVE the Bad Moon...GREAT SCULPTING!
-
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing.
-
Fantastic! That looks so grimy I can smell it from here. What an awesome project!

Excellent start as always ;D
-
Looks amazing already, can't wait to see it finished 8)
One thing though, any windows on the outside wall at some point? ;)
-
The floor and furniture all look great; excellent paintwork. :)
-
I can't really decide if I like the moon sign or the wood more. They are both stunning, and the idea itself is brilliant.
-
excellent progress. I love it.
-
beautiful work. The flooring looks amazing online (in the flesh I imagine it's even better), the whole thing's going to be a great backdrop for the miniatures.
-
I'm so glad I didn't see this thread when it was first started because I got to see it painted straight away once I opened the thread instead of waiting in anticipation. This is great work! I really love the little splatters of different colours on the floor, they all have their own little story to tell. The sculpting is great. How big is the sign?
-
Not only is this a fantastic concept, but the execution is brilliant! That floor is so grimy that I'm sure someone's bound to fall through it at some point.
-
This is so cool. I need to figure out how you do your washes over contrasting prime coat technique. That could save me a lot of time when painting terrain in the future.
-
Indeed. A very original auberge. No i have to go do some belated shopping ..... and damm it is raining. Now where is that Vikotnik?-)
-
Just had another look :-*. You seriously need to share the recipe for that wooden floor!
-
Thanx for the nice comments, they are much appreciated indeed!
I hope I can find the time to post some more during next week.
There really is no recipe for that technique - I made it up as I went along. Just some washes with 'Vallejo Wash' (mainly sepia and woodgrain)over the primed floor, then some drybrushing. After everything was dry, I sprayed the whole floor with distilled water and dripped some colors here and there. Done.
-
Do you find that distilled water makes much of a difference?
cheers
James
-
Much. The water here is full of lime. Distilled water lets the colours flow much better.
-
And there was me thinking that you were just really posh.
:D

I thought that might be the case :)
I think I shall be purchasing some in the not so distant future.

Very atmospheric, that floor. Are you going to give a good spray later with beer to get the scent down too or would that be a waste of beer?
-
This is going to be a lovely eye candy again. Karsten, are you going to make a Tactica game with it?

I hope we see this at Tactica ;D

Any update on this?
