Title: Fighting Men of old
Post by: maxxon on November 24, 2014, 10:45:30 AM
I recently dug up my medievals box in a vain attempt to empty it.

Here's the first batch:

These are mostly old Grenadier Fighting Men range sculpted by Mark Copplestone.

The dogs are from Ral Partha I believe -- their handler is in the next batch.

The guy on the right is straight out of a Gary Chalk picture. Gary is my fave fantasy illustrator, he did most of the illustrations for Fantasy Warlord, which this figure belongs to. I think he's a Merchant Kingdoms hero?

Here's Goldilocks with shield detail. The gold armor is too pale, should have gone for solid paint and washes instead of just drybrushing it. I also think his eye-stabbing dagger has been miscast.

Read more about it here: http://www.smallcuts.net/blog/?id=1845

Good effort with the emptying your medieval stash. And nice that you have a shield painter to help you out with the task :)

Well, you could go to my site and try typing "war dog" into the search...

But actually it seems this is the only other pic of the doggies:

Thanks.

The plate armor is simply two successive drybrushes of silver on black primer. I have an old Miniature Paints silver, which is kinda mid-silver. That went on with a heavy drybrush and then I used Foundry silver highlight in a light drybrush for final highlights -- though you could skip that step, it's not all that prominent.

Do that first because it's messy and then fill in the rest of the colors.

I've basically given up on trying to do 3-color the metallics. I'm ok with it for skin and cloth, but the metals never turn out right.

The studded armor on one of the dogs is rather tedious to do but not really that hard. Paint it all leathery brown, wash with sepia and after it's dry, put a small black dot on each stud, then go back and put a slightly smaller silver dot on each stud. You don't have to be super neat, small mistakes don't matter but I find that without the black base there's not enough contrast for the studs to show up.
