After some months of gaming and painting break it’s finally time to set priorities. And one of these priorities is some Strange Aeons gaming, especially VUK (Von unaussprechlichen Kulten). Some LAFer fellows (Admiral Benbow, Westfalia Chris, Lt.Hazel and Skink) and me are going to build come cults and play a few games with them next year. This thread is going to be kind of a blog of this small project, providing you all with some pics of our figs and hopefully also our gaming reports at some point.
The first (and perhaps most important) part of that project has been the choice of the gangs. Lt.Hazel (the speediest..) did grab the Dagonites (you know, everyone wants to play Dagonites and to worship the only true god), Skink got the Ghouls (not bad as well..), Admiral took Dunwich Folk ( always loved that Lovecraft’s story), Chris is still thinking and I had to make best of the rest and did decide to make my fortune with the Death Cult. Mad scientist, zombies, mummies, Ancient warriors, what else you need more?
Choosing figures was easy, at least for the first part. Some LAM mad scientists are romping around on my table since about one year and so I jumped at the opportunity finally to paint them. Here are my first outcomes. Though the zombie has been painted months ago, only the doc and the heavily armed henchman are newly painted. Still need nice names for them, so if you guys have good ideas, feel free to post them.
And here we go..

Great looking figures and an awesome looking graveyard! I look forward to following this thread with some interest and thanks for sharing.
-
Glad to see you haven't forgotten how to paint ;D
They look great :-*
I think the gunner should be called Bits McGinty, the chap in the red coat, hacksaw Jerome and how about Maddoc for the Mad doc :D
cheers
James
-
Great start for a nice project :)
Will follow with interest
-
Great looking stuff and I really love the graveyard. Those miniatures I would call Agent Ernst Stavro and Agent Ahnolt.
-
Just wow.
I so want to play VUK too but players are scarce here, so I have veered away so far.
-
Thanks for the nice comments, chaps, much appreciated. Also big thanks for the name suggestions, some great ideas there!
Glad to see you haven't forgotten how to paint ;D
I alsmost did. Six months without brushes, I'm not really satisfied with these to be honest, still need some training.
..and an awesome looking graveyard!
The graveyard is painted by Grimm, he's just a terrain god. I've did use the graveyard on various threads already here on LAF and it's still works.
Just wow.
I so want to play VUK too but players are scarce here, so I have veered away so far.
That's a pity, maybe we can play a game together meeting at Tactica or somewhere else in the north.
-
Brilliant stuff so far. Can't wait to read of the exploits of you twisted LAF cult leaders. :)
-
Lovely stuff Prof!! I will take pics of my first two fishmen tomorrow.
-
Looking forward to this :o :o

Jup, this is going to be something worth watching.
-
Off we go then! I do have lots of Cthulhu monster stuff mainly from RAFM, but it was real hard to find some suitable minis for my Dunwich parish. Copplestone's hillbillies came up for my rescue, and from there the comunitiy grew. Eight comely fellows are prepared now and I will start painting soon ... 8)

Those Mad Scientists of yours were destined for this.

Thanks, Mason!
yes, glad I finally can use them for a game. Also thinking about making some zombies for the gang using the Steam-Punk zombie heads.
Beautiful start. Love the blood splatter.
Thank you, the blood splatter are very easy to make, you only need some diluted red color and a stiff bristled brush for splattering.
-
I gathered that, it's just making sure you get it right the first time ;)

OK here are the first "beauties" of my Dagonites.

I really like these fishmen!
-
Nice! Love that black. :-*
-
Nice work on those slippery bastards.
:-* :-*

Nice...very nice.
I was working on a set of those very same graveyard walls last month. Is that mausoleum on the hill scratch built? Looks like a perfect entry point into the underworld...

It's no sctratch built. The mausoleum is an OOP piece, bought about 10-12 years ago, sorry, no idea what company, closed down already.

My Deep One, a Reaper Tiik Warrior. I still regret that I did not buy one or two of Fenris Games Deep Ones at Crisis, but this one is nice, too.

What a paintjob on that beauty!!! :P

Gorgeous, Jan! A scary beast!
-
Brilliant - all of them!! :-*

Great Thread, great pictures. Reminds me of our old gaming times.

Yep. When Grimm was shocked that I had Never heard of Lovecraft and the whole Cthullu World. I can still see him performing his Version of the Innsmouth shuffle in Maiks Living Room!

Great colours on the Deep One.

Really great paintjob on that Deep One.

There is something paricularly cool in the rules of Deatch Cult I'm looking forward to. Injection of Zombies in the game with "diabolical serum"! Though it's a tricky one as you have to roll a dice if you want to inject a zombie..
Anyway, I had to involce that lovely girl in my gang..:) Also I have a new zombie, a conversion, incl. LAM Steam-Punk mechanist and a zombie head from the same range:

James

Outstanding Alex!!! The conversion also works, can't wait to see them "live" in January!
Cheers
Jan
-
This Cult is really starting to come together.
Brilliant idea with that conversion, sir.
I certainly wouldn't fancy a slap from that spanner.*
8) 8)
That scene looks lovely too.
Great composition.
:-* :-*
*When I say 'spanner', I am not referring to Bibbles.... ::)
:D
-
Again fantastic stuff! Also the new photo background is a lot nicer than the other one...I find that backgrounds that are a bit (or even a lot) darker work a lot better and look nicer than the really light ones.
-
Yup, that needle looks the part. :o
Splendid work as always.
-
Thanks, guys :)

Yep, I've never been quit happy with my photos using light background. Now I've googled some dark ones and going to try to them.
-
I've always liked the look of the ones on the Massive Voodoo site (http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.nl/2010/05/photo-backgrounds.html (http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.nl/2010/05/photo-backgrounds.html))...still have to get those printed and use them myself. I use a fully black background, but I think with these I would get better pictures.

Funny, it's exactly the page where I found the idea to use a dark background :)

I painted my Magus today, a High Priest of Dagon. This Reaper miniature looks arcane, sinister and fishy-just as I imagine a high ranking worshipper of the Fish God.
(http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s274/snilloc_photos/DagonHP1_zps9a151650.jpg) (http://s154.photobucket.com/user/snilloc_photos/media/DagonHP1_zps9a151650.jpg.html)
Hope you like him!

Love the palette on that Jan 8)
cheers
James
-
Makes me want to get some fishmen.
-
There's always reason to get fish Men!
Lovely work
Regards
Jim
-
Thanks guys! I will use the black and purple colour scheme for the whole cult, with purple robes reserved for the higher ranking fishes.
-
Beautiful stuff!

New members for the Death Cult! A Witch! Admittedly not the usual kind of. A woman doesn't need to be old and ugly to be a witch, I think :) Also she doesn't need to wear some dirty clothes. I wanted to paint this Westwind figure since many years, this time I've finally managed it. The both little fellas (some kind of mini-Sasquatch or whatever) are supposed to be her faithful familiars. The miniatures are unreleased LAM ones.
The car on the pic looks a bit flat painted, that's because it's not painted at all. Still have to give it a go. The two boned sculptures are from Monolith, very nice and useful stuff.

And this awesome thread just gets better and better. Excellent additions by both the Lt. and the Professor, again exemplary execution (sorry, couldn't hel myself there.)
I'm glad I included a CotBG membership in my SE KS pledge. I am very much looking forward to getting a proer look at the VUK rule set. Looking forward to the further additions you guys have planned and the cults yet unseen and as always thanks for sharing.
-
Love that 'Witch' figure.
Never seen it before.
:-* :-*
But those mini-Sasquatch are cracking..... :o

All excellent and creative additions, friends! Very lovely! :-*
So it's time to introduce the Anzengruber family, representing some of the fearful Gündelbach folk. Some police agents believe that the family split in the late nineteen century and one part went over to the states, settling down in the Dunwich area ...
If you follow the Gündelbach police reports, there where horrible occurrences and unbelievable malpractices around the Anzengruber farm down in the deep Gündelbach woods, culminating in the horrendous events in January 1924. Leading and protecting the ancient swabian family was Theresia Anzengruber, born Bockenwald:
She had two half-brothers, one of them Leif Anzengruber, whose mother was unknown and who has also been her husband:
The other half-brother was Malte, a malformed but nevertheless frolic guy, always good for a joke. He was very popular with the local woodcutters due to his friendly smile and grasping attitude at work, calling him "a good hand!" His descent on the maternal side is also unclear:
Here a rare picture of Theresia, Leif and Malte at the farm's unkempt pond:
This report will be continued, featuring the other two brothers of the family, Siegfried and Levin, and the family's lovely children Lavinia, Traudel and Edwin ...
:)
-
It is getting better and better! Prof, that witch and her familiars are so cool. And Admiral, those locals are well Chosen and nicely painted.
-
Gut gemacht, Herr Admiral!
I love Anzengrubers and I love their forlorn village ;) Great story and some amazing paintwork, I can't wait to see the rest of the family!
-
Mind boggling!!!
-
Stunning!
:o :o :o
Whilst the painting on all of the family is wonderful, Malte is sublimely ugly.
How wonderful.
:-* :-* :-*
One question: What is a German banjo called?
-
Das Banjo.
-
Yupp its still a banjo
-
Wow, great stuff here. I especially like those Dunwich folks.

One question: What is a German banjo called?
Do you want to know the german Word for Banjo or the german equivalent of a Banjo? That would be, in case of the Azenhubers, a "Zupfinschdrumentle".
-

Sounds much better than 'banjo'.... 8)
Can any of the Azenhubers play one with their toes?
;)

just to be clear here
and as someone from northrhinewestphalia i have to point out that
thats not german thats bavarian or some other heavy accent :D :D ;)
and the rest of us do not use that worrd.... ;D :D ;D
i think the best compairsion would be normal english and a tick texan accent :D
so yeah this may make sense :D
-
That's my suebian Version of the Word "Gitarre". I can not imagine these hillibillies speaking High German.
-
That's my suebian Version of the Word "Gitarre". I can not imagine these hillibillies speaking High German.
thats why i imagine them speaking bavarian ;) :P
i think " Klampfe" would suit it also
as its kind of a vulgar dismissive word for everything with strings :D
-
Well, whatever, but their name is ANZENGRUBER, not Azenhuber! Damn, those northrhinewestphalian hillbillies, no culture at all ...
:D
-
Although I find the various German dialects very educational I do like das banjo lol

Various stuff, useful for any sorts of cult (or not cult) gaming by various manufacturers. Fantascene, RAFM, Stronghold Terrain, LAM. Just ask me if you'd like to know more about a particular piece.
Painting stuff like this makes really fun, it doesn't take that much time and it looks nice on a board. I definitely need more of such little things.

Fantastic looking stuff. I especially love the coffin and the book. Things like this gives a table a lot more character...still want to buy and paint more small things too.
-
Nice set dressing, Prof!
The sacks are my particular favourites.

Really nice Prof!

Thanks! I've vivited the RAFM site and found them after searching quite a lot...that site really sucks. After that I went to Battlefield Berlin and found them a lot quicker...should have searched there first.

Two new protagonists today, another Zombie, actually Frankenstein Monster's bride from Foundry (amazing sculpt, made by Steve Buddle ages ago) and another conversion of a LAM figure. This time I've beheaded Plynkes (sorry, Dylan :)) and gave him a new head (again from the Steam-Punk range), wearing a cap and a gasmask. I think this way he does look even more dangerous >:D

Very sinister.

That's a wonderfully eclectic group you have there that nevertheless works well together.
I particularly like the penultimate photo; just the right setting for the zombie bride.
I too look forward to seeing more.

To be honest, no idea yet. So feel free to share if you have any ;)

I wasn't sure about that all till I saw them on the photo. It really does work and that's a bit surprising :)

Fantastic paintjobs! I've noticed that I have the same piece of (aquarium) scenery, which is looking very nice...I also have a big Ankor Wat type of temple of the same manufacturer which I can also recommend.

I suppose it depends on where you want to game, city, country etc
A castle is an obvious choice but a bit clichéd.
How about a 1950's lab?
cheers
James
-
Use what you already have and add some modern touches to it.
I use a lot of my Mordheim scenery and just add period cars, phone boxes etc to set the period.
Go for an old fashioned Northern European village setting and you will already be halfway there with your Witchtown scenery and just add the more 'modern' stuff as you go.
;)

Well, I was thinking of Germany as the place but I agree, a castle would be too much of a cliche. A lab would be great, any hints for stuff to buy for?

Yes, of course, exactly what I have thought for the first game, some half-temibered Witchtown houses + some cars and so on. Later on would be nice to build up some sort of a lab.

Are you sure you don't want to make anything, I'm sure they'd look great :)
Failing that, the usual would do. Lab tables, big electric generators, plenty of shelves full of wonders. The building itself could be an old disused warehouse, boarded up and over grown.
cheers

Great Plynykes conversion :)
-
Splendid!
I have 2 cults sitting around, ready for action, but - as often is the case - got side-tracked by other projects. Now i feel it's about time I get that Renedra church finished and ready for the table (a churchyard is such an atmosperic setting for VuK and SA). The days between Christmas and New Year's Eve should provide the necessary time!
Nothing like a good thread to rekindle the motivation for a dormant project! :)

Wow! I've just had a wee look through the whole thread! Beautiful!!!........well apart from the ugly monsters! Well you know what I mean!! ;)

Sure, making things by yourself is a good thing. But lack of time is a permanent problem :(
Great Plynykes conversion :)
Matt, posting this I had to think of your Africa conversion of Plynkes, a great piece :)

Thanks, Argonor:) I like Renedra church but I've hesitated to buy it because of hearing of others being not quite happy with the kit (issues assembling it)..
There are some issues (that's actually why I haven't quite finished it, yet) - I'll have to do some putty-work where the bell-tower meets the roof, otherwise it will seem gravity-defying.
I wanted to make the roof removable, but realized that it would require major conversion-work, so the church is going to be there as a mood-setter only (but I can always make a floor-plan, or simply allow for a character entering it to do a search for interesting clues/stuff).
-
Alright, can't have the Prof doing all the hard work ... ;D
Time to introduce some offspring of the Anzengruber family: first young Traudel, blind daugther of Theresia and Malte (obviously ...). Visitors of Gündelbach reported that she could be quite winning in times, but also having a dangerous and appaling presence ...
Her half-brother Edwin, Theresia's son with Siegfried, has rarely been seen by any visitors. That is, there havn't been any visitors to report about. 8)

Over here we have a TV programme that features people like that.
It is called the Jeremy Kyle show.

This time something really big. Such expensive (20BP!) piece should be big. The figure is from Reaper as far as i know, bought ages ago because I buy everything (or almost everything) I see that is looking like Frankenstein's monster. I probably could make a whole gang using only these constructs.
Of course I am not going to put it to the gang for the first gang, but who knows by some luck by the Zombie serum injection I can replace some of my zombies with this guy >:D

Next addition for the Death Cult, a Mummy! Sculpt made by Mark Copplestone, I think it's not more available.

Ages ago since I've painted a mummy, my old ones (Westwind) did look that way, I had painted them for some Pulp gaming about 8-9 years ago:
I have to admit, I do like my newly painted one much more :)
-
I agree - the darker tones overall give it a more siniter feel. the older ones look too clean in comparison now.
-
Haha how brilliant. I just thought about my Conan unravelling a mummy earlier this day!
Love what you're doing.

Agree, way too clean. Also I really don't know why I've decided to paint the mummy "flesh" in grey colors ::) Visiting the Archeological museum in Florence last summer I've been able to see real mummies and they weren't grey but brown.

Thank you :)

Love the tonal variation in the new one 8) 8)

All those mummies look great, but the darker looks a lot older and maybe menacing than those light ones.

Time to introduce the rest of the Anzengruber clan. First and foremost, Siegfried, Paterfamilias and father of strange Edwin, the maniac:
On to Levin, another brother of Theresia. As far as we know, no own kids.
Daughter of Theresia and Leif: the beautiful Lavinia. Well, usually she's wearing a long garment to hide her legs and a bonnet. This rare picture shows her hunting outfit ...
And a group shot of the family in front of their homestead:
Surprisingly some rumours continue to circulate about other children Theresia gave birth to. Some say it had been twins many years ago, but nobody could confirm it or procure any evidence about them. Nor about their father ...

Great collection! Who makes Lavinia?

Magnificent! Love the colours and the whole gang, great show, Michael :-*

Great collection! Who makes Lavinia?
Lavinia is a Werner Klocke sculpt he did many years ago for a subgame of the german DSA/Armalion-Miniaturen range called Myranor. She was part of a box of miniatures "Myranische Helden 2" and you can see her here http://www.armalion-kompendium.de/?section=miniaturen&subsection=dsaboxen&id=90 (http://www.armalion-kompendium.de/?section=miniaturen&subsection=dsaboxen&id=90)
I just checked my lead pile and found another one. If you're interested just send me a pm. :)

Excellent work 8) 8) 8)

Stunning!
Love all the inbred bastards and that beastie in the background is great too.
Another member of the family, perhaps...?
:-* :-* :-*
And now you will have me searching the leadpile for beastmen to chop up....
;)

Never heard of it, that's an interesting looking set. I'll have to take you up on the offer :)

This thread is fantastic! or...cult-tastic or whatever. Loving the strange variety of models being used. Such love when building your cults will not go unrewarded on the tabletop. :-*
-
Whoa! Absolutely love the thingummy-grubers! What a great photo too.
-
Now I'd like to present, Dr. Harald von Totenfels! He had a legs injury in the Great War and could survive only to his mad genius, making himself to a horrifying half-human, half-machine.

I had hopes it wasn't finished yet ... :-*
We should have a game next time!

Great stuff, if ever so slightly bizarre :D
cheers

Yes, we definitely should :) And in the meantime I will put together another cult.
Great stuff, if ever so slightly bizarre :D
Yes, it is, James, agree. I've bought this Monolith miniature about 8-10 years ago and all the time I didn't know what to make with it. This cult was the opportunity. I have no other miniature that would fit the role of a Magus that good :)
-
I thought it was a conversion as I couldn't see buying 'off the shelf' lol
Great stuff nonetheless :)
cheers
James

He looks like a sinister version of Wallace!
Nice painting!

At least the Anzengrubers are united ...
(Heresy Ghoul king converted)

Aha!
So that was the fella hiding in the woods.
;)
Great conversion and wonderful paintjob on that freak.
:-* :-*
-
Absolut fantastic stuff here :o :o :-* :-*
i think about a "Black Goat membership" , really need the rules!
-
this is s good on so many levels!
-
'How to get a head in whipping your victims with your tentacles' lol
Looks great Michael :)
cheers

Another masterful addition to your growing cult Professor. This thread has moved into epic territory. Happily I have included a Cult membership in my KS pledge so hopefully soon will be able to peruse the VUK rule set myself and begin work on my own cults. But until that time I shall bask in the glory of you fine gentlemen's efforts. Thanks to all for sharing their efforts with us.
-
Those twins are great. A real Lovecraftian nightmare! This thread is pure gold. :-*
-
He seems pleasant :)
Fantastic painting on him, I love the contrast and the colors in the faces.
-
Great thread!! Great painting and modeling!
Really looking forward to see where this is going.
I think idea of a german setting is good. It would make a change to typical hillbilly USA. How about a lost village on the foggy east Frisian coast (Ostfriesland) or deep in the Black Forest.

Good idea, Rob! Now it just depends on you: what will be the kult of your choice? Tactica is approaching ... ;D
-
You guys better take loads of pictures! It will be eye candy!!!
-
Bit of awesomeness.

Ok, no problem:
- Dunwich obviously,
- Arcane Seekers ("a Gentlemen's Club gone horribly wrong!"),
- Cult de Ghouls (ghouls and friends)
- Dagonites (the fishies from Innsmouth ...)
- Death Cult (totally krank ...)
- Serpent Worshippers (snakemen)
and of course "The Law"!
-
This is superb, it's making me tempted to start my own Lovecraftian force :D. That's all we need lol!
Thanks for the sterling and inspiring work
