Hi guys,
Only two months and then the first edition of Poldercon will be held in the Netherlands. A real gaming galore with all kinds of miniature gaming goodness. And Pulp Alley is also there! I will be doing four participation games. Four games with two leagues duking it out in the hot and damp jungles of South America.
Andrew from Statuesque Miniatures was so awesome to support the games with several goodies! First off, we have some nice stuff for the 100 goody bags which are handed to the first 100 participants of Poldercon. And for the people playing Pulp Alley we have some real treats...!
But to play the games, we need miniatures. And I wanted two leagues led by Pulp Alley miniatures. So it will be Minerva vs Captain Wolf! A dastardly nazi league against the rough sailors. I decided to do smaller leagues with one perk each, so the games run fast and people learn the basics of the game. We have about 90 minutes for each game, so I didn't dare to use the full leagues. I'd rather have smaller games to highlight the mechanics, fun and action than to stop a game prematurely.
I just finished painting Minerva's league, so one down, and one to go!
Leader - Minerva
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/minerva.jpg)
The leader of this league. I envision her as an evil lady, so a perfect leader for the nazis. I went with german green pants to tie her in with the rest. And of course she needed to have blonde hair...
Sidekick - Herr Stahl
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/herrstahl.jpg)
Minerva isn't all about combat, so she needs a strong sidekick to back her up. Herr Stahl would do well I guess. He was really nice to paint and went superfast! I think I did him in one evening. That's the good thing about painting black...it always goes fast! At first I wanted to paint insignia on his red patch, but in the end decided not to. This looks good enough and people won't be disturbed.
Ally - Dieter
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/dieter.jpg)
Yes, a FANTASTIC Bob Murch sculpt. So much character in his face and I love his equipment. Terrific for pulp and he was ace to paint. It was my first going with German green clothes and I am happy with the result. Used a photo of some re-enacters for all the insignia and colors.
Ally - Franz
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/franz.jpg)
Poor, poor Franz. The silly soldier forgot to apply sunblock and thus burned his arms and head. Fortunately, he was wearing his T-shirt. ;D
I know, a silly idea. But wanted to do it nonetheless. Like always with Murch sculpts, he went FAST and was a real joy to paint. I decided to give him a tattoo to break up the large flesh area. 5 minutes later I had this design. Good enough for me!
So, that's the league finished! For a full league I will need to have a couple more miniatures, but got these in the pipeline for after the con :)
Now, Captain Wolf...time for some color!
-
Awesome painting jobs on the figures!

And more you will have...!
Captain Wolf
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/captainwolf.jpg)
What a terrific sculpt and what a joy to paint! Had loads of fun with the old leather coat. Took quite some time to get it how I wanted, but in the end I got the right look. Lots of small brush strokes to get that leather effect. If you want a deep brown, I really recommend getting some P3 Brown Ink to glaze the brown. It gives a nice warm tone to it.
And Wolf doesn't come alone to the jungle...he's bringing along his crew! Not new paintjobs, but here they are nonetheless:
Bosun Hayes

Seadog Knowles

Deckhand Sam
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/sailor3.jpg)
So that completes both leagues! Next up is to do some more jungle pieces and maybe paint Wolf's ship...the "Anarhichas".
-
Oooohhhh I love that coat!
-
Agree, that coat is top notch. Really like Captain Wolf, where the mini comes from?
-
Great stuff, Marijn! That coat is lovely. I want one for myself, along with Deckhand Sam's jumper, to keep me warm this winter.
@Prof: Wolf is from Pulp Alley and Statuesque. :)
-
Those are frickin' beauties!

Yup, one of mine thanks, with direction from David and Mila.

Beautiful painting on Captain Wolf, Malebolgia! :-*
(and all the others)
-
Really lovely painting.
The Statuesque range for Pulp Alley consists entirely of beautiful sculpts.
-
Captain Wolf! Outstanding! The coat looks fantastic. Like the basing on the figures too. If everything is to this standard, they're going to be very nice looking games.
-
Another fine job :-*

Amazing paint-jobs!

Love the figures, well done.
Look forward to seeing more.

Update - Four jungle pieces done!
Since Captain Wolf and Minerva will be duking it out in the jungle, I need some good jungle scenery. Now, I already have a lot of jungle pieces, but I wanted to add some more pieces with volume and oomph. So in the last month I sat down and made four pieces, including a HUGE tree.
How?
1. Saw and sand MDF board into oval shapes. I sanded the sides down to a nice slope.
2. Cut up 3cm blue styrofoam into 3cm squares. I then used a steel brush to really mangle them and add a lot of texture.
3. Glue the styrofoam cubes, the big plants and pieces of slate to the MDF. For the big tree I made a big waning moon from styrofoam to mount around the tree. I glued the tree inside this shape and the total product became rock solid. Finally I glued down pieces of cork, bark and some plastic plants to the bases.
4. Add PVA glue to the bases and then sand.
5. Paint the whole base dark brown and drybrush with a medium brown and finally an Ivory color. Paint the cubes with P3 Trollblood Base and then Ivory. The rocks were painted by drybrushing with various grey tones over black.
6. Use a hot glue gun and glue down all of the plastic plants. I really went bananas in this step! I added a zillion pieces and had loads of fun. I think the plastic look works well for these plants. I also added some big chunks of wood for more volume.
7. I used the hot glue gun to glue down a lot of clump foliage. This is fantastic stuff to hide the dried hot glue.
8. Finally, I added PVA glue all over the place and sprinkled fine green turf over this to simulate algae, moss and other greenish stuff. I LOVE fine turf, it's so useful!
And now some pictures with our two main actors for Poldercon!
Jungle 1
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/jungle1.jpg)
Jungle 2
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/jungle2.jpg)
Jungle 3
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/jungle3.jpg)
Absurdly big tree
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/tree2.jpg)
Yes, that tree is HUGE. It's around 40cm high so adds a lot of height to the table. I added a hidden stone dais inside the hollow of the tree...perfect as a location for a plot point! Other than that, it's a huge piece of blocking scenery for line of sight and just to look cool ;). Really happy with how it turned out!
Bonus goodies for the players and visitors!
I mentioned it before, but we have a lot of goodies for the players. Not only do the first 100 visitors get some ace discount coupons from Statuesque Games, we also have promo cards from mr. Phipps himself for the players! And it's not done yet...no...the players will get a surprise gift from Statueque AND a surprise gift from me!
It's going to be like Christmas...!
-
The jungle pieces are amazing; the minis too, BTW.
-
Fantastic work, Marijn! :-* :-* :-*
-
Now I really can't wait for Poldercon! Fantastic! :-*
-
That is really nice. I wish I could go and see it in for real!
-
Wow, great looking figures. I especially love Franz and Captain Wolf...Minerva looks awesome as well. I might steal your sunburn idea...it's hilarious.
-
Hi, Not sure if you got my direct email, but Sally 4th would love to support you with a discount voucher and freebies for Pulp Alley gamers. Please drop me an email direct to sort out details.

And a new addition to my collection I'm bringing to Poldercon: a 36" x 36" gaming mat by Deep-Cut Studio. It is a cloth mat with the print soaked inside of it. It sounds a bit technogizmo stuff, but it looks awesome and the print won't come off! Really nice quality and the size is perfect. Here are two shots with Minerva to show the size of it:
-
This mat looks amazing; never seen anything like it. I had a look at the site and I think I'm tempted to buy a few. Besides looking look, they must take essentially no storage space, which is an argument for me, ... and for my wife even more so.
-
i looked at the deep cut mat but i can't justify the cost of £25.90 (roughly $38 US) for 3x3 plus shipping. it does look really nice though.
-
The total cost was around 40 euros. Thought it was a good price for a mat which will be used a lot and for a looooooong time.
Update!
Sally 4th have joined the list of sponsors with a great addition for all participating players.
I have also ordered some cool burlap bags to house all of the goodies! Will shoot some pictures once they're done :)

Awesome, it sounds like you'll have lots of Pulp Alley goodies to give-away. :D :D

Definitely a good looking mat and that price isn't too bad if it was going to hold up well for a few hundred Pulp Alley games. ;)

Only 3 more days until Poldercon!

Well Poldercon has ended, and I had a blast! I was able to play three different games, and the last one was a game of Pulp Alley :) It was some kind of a reunion game for three Pulp Alley gaming buddies; Bier (Marijn), Beard (Jan) and Bald (me), since the last time we played PA together was about a year ago...
Marijn was the host of the Pulp Alley participation game at Poldercon, and I have to give him the biggest compliments for running these games. The table he brought was spectaculair to behold and really inviting to join: an awesome gaming surface, loads of awesome scenery, PA tokens, personal league cards in full color and two leagues filled with pulpy characters. Aside from having all these cool elements, Marijn was there to guide the players along so the action kept going. Everyone had a blast from what I can tell, as there were lots of laughs and cheers during these games! What more can you ask for when you join a participation game? 8)
The game between Jan and me was a reminder for me just how cool this game is, and made me realize it's been too long since I last played it. Jan was the first to discover the location of the major plotpoint, but after my league also found out where it was, the action really got going. Grenades were thrown, guns were fired, and miniatures got knocked down. In the end my sidekick was able to capture the major plotpoint, while my leader tried to hold off the remaining enemies. My sidekick charged Jan's leader Minerva, but got knocked down, dropping the major plotpoint! My leader Captain Wolf tried to escape as the final survivor of my league with the major plotpoint, but after rolling a record breaking string of 1's with my dice, Captain Wolf was also out... ;D So Minevra was finally able to capture the major plotpoint, thus getting Jan the victory with the final dice roll. We shook hands with a big grin on our face after a great game of PA. :)
Oh, and EVERY player got a special PA goodie bag...WOW! What was in it? A random PA miniature, a PA fortunecard, a special orange "Poldercon" PA 3" Sally 4th blast template and 2 blue pulp D6... Big thanks to all the sponsors: Dave and Mila, Sally 4th and Marijn! No excuse for me for not playing some more PA... ;)

Sounds like a gas! Surely someone took pictures, I hope?! :D

Oh yeah, absolutely!!
Sounds like a lotta fun,
BUT ...
"Pictures, or it never happened"
I hope somebody thought to take photos of the goodie bag contents,
BEFORE they pawned 'em down at da hock shop...

I had a blast! Playing Nazi's, I didn't win (damn you Captain! Bloody gymnast jumping through terrain and Aztek windows!), and thought tying the goodie bag into the game was a great idea. Play was very easy, I picked it up in no time, thx to excellent hints from the host and opponent, with excellent scenery and mini's. And upon leaving Poldercon I got a goodie bag with a discount voucher for Pulp Alley....even better!
I see a pulpy future ahead of me :)

That table does look fantastic, and what a nice goody bag!
-
Well done guys - looks like it was a blast.
-
Observed the first game at poldercon (darn you Gunbird for grabbing that free spot) and it was a blast to watch. I've been gearing up for pulp alley for a while now but this demo REALY got me exited for it!
-
Thanks everybody! Poldercon was a real BLAST and I loved every minute of it. Although it was a long day with four fantastic games, I wasn't actually tired. On the contrary: the games, players and gaming environment gave a big boost and I came home with lots of energy (that says something after 8 hours of gaming and 4 hours of driving!).
And for the goody bags, I'd like to thank all three sponsors:
1. Statuesque Miniatures for a FREE Pulp Alley miniature for all participating players.
2. Pulp Alley for a FREE Fortune Card, a convention special edition!
3. Sally 4th for a FREE 3" Burst marker which was engraved especially for the event.
Excellent stuff for the players and they all loved it.
I made pictures of all four games and I hope to do full reports on all four of them. Will take some time, but I will do my best!
Until next year! Who knows...Cyber Alley...?

Loving the Pulp Alley! :-*
May even get to try it one day?
Never know?
Nice.
-
Thanks for sharing the pics from the event. It looks like it was lots of fun. :D
-
Essentially, the players who were fortunate enough to play on your amazing table and minis got rewarded with an amazing goody bag ... o_o !
Well, that's cool!
-
Where did you get those dice that you put in the Pulp Alley goodie bag?
-
Had them made at EM4 Miniatures. I first made a design in Illustrator of Indy's Fedora and whip and sent this to EM4. They sent me 50 dice and they all look real spiffy in real life. Initially made for Chaos in Cairo, but use them for Pulp Alley now instead :)
-
Awesome stuff!
