Title: The Grymn of Vault 7 (Updated 4-17-17 tanks!)
Post by: Sinewgrab on December 24, 2014, 06:20:06 AM
So, I really REALLY struggled with where I should post this topic.  I am painting these guys in the Vault Security color scheme from Fallout, but I am planning on having a lot more than just infantry eventually, so I decided to post them here.

The first three:

The last gentleman got an Imperial Guard backpack so the he could fulfill the role of medic.  I am fairly pleased with how this color scheme is working out, and I am glad that my painting mojo has been coming back over the last month or so.  I was kind of off kilter for a few months.

I don't know why my camera will not consistently give me the same lighting when nothing else changes.

Very nice - especially the face on the second one. Nice colour scheme too. 8) 8) 8)
Colours by camera: could it be due to change in lighting due to shadows (maybe your own) or the total amount of light/range of shades changing in the field of view?

Yep, the face on the second one is excellent :)

They all look great and I look forward to seeing many more :)

Hmm, I dunno.  Maybe I need a better light box.

Thank you for the compliments!  I love Kev's figures.

My next task is to paint the various vehicles I am converting or painting to go with them, and right now I am planning on using for a very X-Com styled game using the Pulp Alley rules.

And the Grymn get a plane.  I honestly think that this is one of GW best kits in the last 10 years, though if I were to build it again, I would take the time to turn over the fins in the back to look proper.
I tried to make this look like the skyranger from X-Com.

Thanks, everybody.

So now I was looking for vehicles to add to the army, because, well, we play a fair amount of FUBAR and Stargrunt around here, and I need some armor for my Grymn.  So, I got some robots from the Star Wars prepaints, added some bits from tanks I had around, and voila!

I removed some of the arms, and I painted some parts of it to make it seem like it had windows.

And now troop carriers - one with necessary radar dish so prevalent on 'command vehicles' in all those cheesy movies...

I have the turrets magnetized so that they will be interchangeable, and if I want to have different turrets later.

Vehicles are some OLD GZG models.  I wish they did better casting with the resin (fair amount of small bubbles) but then these were old enough the resin had turned DARK yellow, so they were probably cast in the early 90's.

Huh, no responses.  Either everyone expects this level of cool from me, and has no comment, or I am really off the charts.  Like, unseen.

Heh.

Anyway, for this project, does anyone have any suggestions for what I can use for civilians for rescuing that match up to Kev's Grymn?  Inso, any ideas?

Thanks, Eilif.  I am not done yet either - I have a couple more bizarre ones to use.

I have no idea when or where I got this little number, but I thought I would paint it up.

Seems to be some kind of Chibi-style jet - it had a huge head that I replaced with a pilot head from the Valkyrie.  Not exactly an interceptor with avalanche missiles, but it would do in a pinch.

Brillaint job on the Grymm and the vehicles!

The old GZG vehicles are still available by the way - Daemonscape sells them online and on eBay.

Awesome, it looks like one of those cheap import toys from a variety store. Looks like it's time to widen my scope of what is a good potential vehicle for my squats.

I'm going to use Robogear flyers for mine however.

And now, we go vroom!

And then begin to lumber...

So, the buggies are a couple of scratchbuilds from old metal sentinels, ork buggy wheels, and space marine biker wheels, along with some old squat heads.  The tanks are from Kryomek.

So now, I need to get more Grymn.  I have too many vehicles and not enough infantry.

I had a chuckle at the chibi jet. lol I have always passed over them before in hobby shops. Not the most conventional force I've seen on LAF, but it looks good and works together Swinegrab. 8)

The beetle walkers are cool too 8) 8)

It it sometimes startling what you can make fit together with a cohesive paint scheme and planned conversions.  I have stuff in here from oddball models, Kryomek, Games Workshop, Hasslefree, GZG, and soon, VOID and Scibor figures.  I don't even have a cohesive plan for what to do you with the figures - I am just building the small army for the hell of it.

That's pretty much my method though I have several armies growing this way. Depending on what I pick up (always a bargain hunter) I can find a force that it will fit into.

Those repainted Star Wars prepaints steal the show in some respects, but there are loads of great ideas here.

The rate of output is pretty impressive too.

This is just the sort of project that I love.

There is nothing better than collecting together stuff that looks cool, from a bunch of different manufacturers and making it all go together in a coherent fashion.

It is something I like to do and it is something I love to be inspired by when other people do it.

Top job :).

The jet kinda grows on you, actually.

So, after chopping a chunk off the tip of my left index finger at work this week, I ended up with more free time than expected, and got some stuff painted while I sat around.  The way I hold figures meant that I had the bloody thing above my heart, so it was a good choice.

The Grymn have some cyborgs - the closest I could find to the MEC units in XCom that I already owned.

And, then, I added some OLD figures out of my random 40k bin.  I hadn't even looked at some of these in ages - and I had to find heads for a few of them, because the heads in my bits box that I used earlier (see: buggies) must have come off those bodies.

I will use them as drivers and / or pilots.  Not as physical of an exercise regimen, you know.

And then I used an old Dark Angel figure, and a poor casting I made of him - I wanted 2-4 of these, but paying $22 on ebay for him made me want to hurl, so recast for myself it was.  I told my wife these are the crazy priests in the Vault, who claim that the helmet will be worn only by the Grymn's greatest hero, but that no-one is willing to put the bloody thing on, because it does not work.

Group photo!

And, as I try to make these work for XCom as well, I have been trying to make the abducted humans...my sculpting skills are mediocre at best, but we'll keep plugging away.

And because I painted him, here is a little gem of a 2nd edition figure I finished up as a break from the Grymn.  I love this figure.

And, as a Dolphins fan, I could care what was going on in the Super Bowl, so I finished up some more figures to use with my Grymn army...

First, an officer's wife...

The shading shows up a little better in person, but I am very pleased with how she came out.

And the officers...which one is hers is dependent on the scenario.  ;)

And a group photo!

I am trying the 'clear base' idea out for myself - I have to say, I am not sold on it.  I think it really depends on the figures, and how you will use them.

So, since Kev can't be bothered to add civilians to his Grymn, I am forced to try and find stuff to use, and we found these.

Keen eyed LAF'ers will recognize Star Wars prepaint collectible bodies with GW heads.  These started life as Ugnaughts - and the the one with his hands behind his back was only given a quick paint redo.  They fit in size wise quite well.

There is a lot to like here, but the ork figure stands out to me because its a personal favourite model.  Its from first edition 40k by the way, the Ere We Go/Freebooters era.

And because my threads never die, just fade into obscurity for a year or so...

I recently got a nice ebay buy of the Kryomek tanks - a lot of old really dubiously painted ones - and went to town to add to my Grymn forces.

One of the siege tanks got a ridiculously big gun to cover up some breakage, and I added a missile tank.

The other siege tank was also broken, but worse, so it became a tank killer, 40k style.  I am pretty happy with the striping, considering it was freehand.

And I added a star wars bendy robot with a quick repaint.
