Back in November I purchased a few blisters of the Great War Miniatures later Germans from Northstar (http://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=20&cat=153&sub=224&page=1) for a nascent Verdun 1916 project.
I've now got the first dozen test models done and am quite happy with the grimy look that I have got.
I'm looking forwards to finishing my platoon and using them with the new WWI modifications for Chain of Command published in the latest Christmas special from TFL (http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15&products_id=156)
As usual, loads more images on Scrivsland (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/some-more-great-war-germans.html)
-
They look good and grimy :)
cheers
James
-
They look great. Nicely desaturated. Like they've stepped out of a photo of the period...
-
Thanks chaps, I quite enjoy painting these, just made a start on another four.
-
Just had to get the rules as i've been thinking for ages that a ww1 chain of command would be brilliant, might make a start on some Frenchmen.
-
Nice - I like the colour palette choice too.
-
They look great.
-
Excellent. I look forward to seeing how your project comes on.
-
Very nice!
LB
-
Those Germans look great!
I'm seriously considering a German mid/late war platoon as my first miniature purchase of 2015; I want to be able to use my White Russians as pre-Revolution Imperial Russians and run the many shiny new scenarios in Chris C's Empire to Revolution book.
Also excited to see other people are going to be trying out the TFL CoC/M&B WW1 rules - I've liked the sound of CoC since it was released but have basically zero interest in WW2, so the new WW1 rules are exactly what I was looking for!
-
Thanks chaps.
Yesterday evening James and I had another chat about using the Chain of Command modifications for WWI and we are quite keen to make a start.
-
Looking good :D
-
Excellent work, Paul.
-
Well, slow going for 2015, but another dozen have been added to the force.
I've been slowly working my way through the Great War Miniatures WWI Germans I picked up from Northstar and the have added another dozen since the start of the year.
I've updated the blog with more images and details of the paint scheme I used: Scrivsland (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/more-wwi-germans.html)
-
Nice stuff. And thanks for sharing the colours, as I want to brighten up my lot (they look too dark).
-
Nice choice of subdued colours combined with good brushwork = an excellent looking unit...will be good seeing them all together
-
Thanks chaps, I will be picking another batch up this evening from Northstar.
-
To echo the others - an excellent unit. Very effective brushwork.
-
The second batch picture is much better and shows them off even more than the first,i wil be watching out for your Verdun project as I will also be adding some drop on fort pieces later this year.
Cheers AL
-
Thank you.
I've put the finishing touches on another 12 Great War Miniatures WWI Germans for the Verdun 1916 Project. This time including a MG08/15 team and some nasty looking trench-raiders.
More images and detail, plus some individual close-ups on Scrivsland (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/another-dozen-great-war-germans.html)
-
Very nice indeed :D
-
Very nice trench raiding party.
-
Splendid and a great finish on the trench armour in particular.
-
Thanks chaps.
NB: The MG08/15 is not for Verdun games but if I use them in games set after April 1917 it will make an appearance.
-
Looking Good :-*
-
Very nicely done!!
-
Trench raiders are magnificent, well done mate! Just like something out of Charley's War.
-
Thanks for all the kind comments. I'm back from my hols so it's time to crack on with some painting.
This week, it's a dozen more german infantry, including a flame thrower.
I have also made a start on getting the terrain together including 2ft of double barbed wire, four entrenchments and other scatter.
More details, including how to make your own flames on Scrivsland (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/more-great-war-germans-plus-terrain.html)
-
Nice job, looking forward to seeing your terrain bits.
-
Scrivs, you've done it again and deflected me from what I'm meant to be working on! We're playing 1918 Chain of Command at Lard Island tomorrow. I'm just knocking out some terrain pieces for that.
Rich
-
Fantastic. This project goes from strength to strength.
-
Eek! Didn't think you'd get the cursed flamethrower painted that quickly. :o
I am just basing my French platoon to face these and will post as soon as I have pics!

Cheers Rich, I think we should be getting our first game in on 5th March if all goes well.
Fantastic. This project goes from strength to strength.
Thank you

Looking forwards to seeing yours done. I've only got six more Jaeger to paint so it will be all heavy weapons after that :)
-
Really good project. Nice painting job !
-
Hope you'll do up after-action reports of the coming conflict !
-
Thanks chaps.
I had a good painting session and completed the last of my Great War Miniatures Germans that I am painting.

Loads more images etc. on the Scrivsland blog (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/finished-off-those-germans.html)

Splendid stuff, look forward to seeing how they do in your game.
-
Very impressive :-* I love the gritty look of your paintjob!
LB
-
Your Prussian officers need dueling scars... ;) Great work
-
Great work. :D
-
Eek! Didn't think you'd get the cursed flamethrower painted that quickly. :o
I am just basing my French platoon to face these and will post as soon as I have pics!
If you need a French one to fry the Germans, use the Italian Scarab model and lengthen the nozzle - that's what one of our other customers did and it looks terrific! (I have a picture somewhere in the depths of one of the many Great War games we have done)
-
Splendid work, Paul !
-
Terrific work!
-
Fantastic collection :-*
-
They look really good :)
-
Thanks for all the kind comments.

This weekend I made four Jump-off points and a load more barbed wire sections for our games.

Nicely done :D

Exllent, Paul.
-
My Brits will be ready soon, so you can switch to the Somme!
-
This week I have painted a pack of the Great War Miniatures German Snipers from Northstar along with the freebie give-away from the Hammerhead show, Chief of the German General Staff, Erich von Falkenhayn, architect of the slaughter at Verdun.
The pack of German snipers is exquisite and I have probably gone a bit overboard with the number of close-ups but the pictures on the Northstar site do not do justice to this pack.

Loads more on the blog (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/german-snipers-and-high-ranking-general.html)
-
Lovely stuff. I like the effort you've put into the bases too.
-
Thanks for posting - fine painting of some very interesting figures.
-
Those prone snipers are something special.
:)
-
Thanks chaps, they were a joy to paint. Back to bog-standard riflemen now :)
-
Excellent stuff Paul :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4EOt1J8_NoI/VSVgtWdhSmI/AAAAAAAAO0U/PJ8b21ligKs/s1600/DSCN0118.JPG)
Over the long weekend break I managed to paint another 18 Great War Miniatures Germans.
I took the plunge on Friday and bought myself a craft magnifier, despite about a 25% increase in time to apply the highlights I am really happy with the result.
As usual, more commentary on the Scrivsland blog http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/more-great-war-germans-plus-admission.html (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/more-great-war-germans-plus-admission.html)
-
What are your green-ish and blue-ish base colors?
They look wonderful. I have a platoon's worth to paint up and cannot seem to figure out the right pallet.
-
Ahh, reinforcements eh?
Good work that man
-
Cheers chaps
The colour palette can be found here: http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/more-wwi-germans.html (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/more-wwi-germans.html)

they all look fantastic :-*, and a big thanks for the colour guide :)
-
Yep, very nicely done. 8)
I read your comment that you did some of the painting while in a hotel. I can never get my head around painting while travelling: I like (need!) my regular 'spot'. :D
-

Very true :-*
I read your comment that you did some of the painting while in a hotel. I can never get my head around painting while travelling: I like (need!) my regular 'spot'. :D
With me it's not so much that I need my regular spot, it's more the extra three or four suitcases I'd have to pack to do just that lol.
Although I have been known to paint up a few last minute bases on a couple of WAB weekenders in Notts back in the day!
Darrell.

Thank you.
If I am away on business I regularly pack a handful of brushes and paints and my daylight lamp so that I can rough in some basecoats. The 1L really useful box will hold 28 Vallejo Model Colour, a palette and a few brushes so takes up bugger all space.
-
Thank you.

Probably a silly question, 1 L Usfel box? Where are they available from Paul?
Darrell.
-
I have picked them up from Hobby Craft, Staples, B&Q, etc.
-
Whoops I meant 1.6L Really Useful Box. Sorry for any confusion!
-
Slow progress this week, but another half dozen have been added.

Damn it they're good ...

Nicely done.

Right, i'm with you on the sort of boxes you use. The very tough, flat bottomed one's that you can stick magnetic tape to, yeah?
Darrell.

Yes, you need the 1.6L though for paints, not the 1.0L

Cheers Darrell, what with Salute and everything it has been quiet on the painting (Western) front of late, but that changed this weekend.....

Great work.... I don't know if i told you but you're at least partially responsible for me ordering quite a few packs from Nick?
I'm holding out for a campaign that should be starting at the Durham club (at least that's my hope if anyone from our club is reading this? :D ).

These past few months I have been turning out WWI Germans like some well oiled piece of Teutonic machinery. With over 100 Bosche finished it's now time to take a more Laissez Faire attitude, spark up a Gauloises and make a start on some Poilu.
Actually, I've not smoked for ten years and am not about to start again.
Those spiffing chaps at Gripping Beast did me a Salute pre-order and last weekend I was filing and sticking them together.
With the long Bank Holiday weekend I managed to get eighteen completed and another half dozen are coming along nicely.

Fantastic, simply fantastic.

Good looking stuff on the new French models Paul :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Thanks chaps.
-
That's a fantastic Horizon Blue you have there.
I'd love to get in a game against you at some point, I wish I lived closer.
-
Tres bien. Vive la France!
-
Thanks chaps, Cessna, where are you? I do get to travel quite a bit.
I've added another eighteen Frenchmen to the force, this time I also added some Chasseurs and a simple conversion for a sniper.

Denver, Colorado, USA; that's probably a bit far for a game...!
-
Could be a struggle at the moment, but if plans go ahead I may be only 3 states (ok half a continent) away this time next year :)

We Coloradoans are used to long-distances. XD
Seriously, maybe we can all make something happen, Great War-wise.
-
Any on out west should be used yo long distances.

Any on out west should be used yo long distances.
Roger that. :) I have friends on the East Coast that can't even comprehend traveling in the West. :)
-
We should figure out how to do a big WWI game - or several - in a central location, especially as it is the centenary. Perhaps we could stage a specific battle. Maybe Jun 1, 2016...?
-
^ I'm liking this idea!
-
I'll start digging the trenches in my back yard.
(I'm sure my wife wouldn't object.)

Trenches? And how, pray tell, shall I make my charge from a trench?
And my lance pennent would get all muddy! XD

Still waiting for that breakthrough, 'eh? ;)
Out of curiosity, what rules are you thinking of using?
-
Still waiting for that breakthrough, 'eh? ;)
Out of curiosity, what rules are you thinking of using?
"Any day now, Sah! It *will* come."
And, not entirely sure about rules. I picked up Triumph and Tragedy, they look good so far. I know that Scrivs and Darrell recommend CoC.
What are you using? I know you mentioned modifying Bolt Action, I do have Bolt Action as well.
-
Bolt Action looks like it could be a lot of fun and easily adapted to WWI. As far as I'm concerned a Mauser rifle is a Mauser rifle. Other stuff could easily be shoe-horned in with a bit of creativity.
Other options are Great War/Over the Top by Warhammer Historicals. That was what I used a few years ago, and had a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately it is out of print.
There's also Too Fat Lardies' Through the Mud and Blood. It's typical of their designs, and looks like fun.
-
Yes, I haven't yet played Bolt Action but it reminds me of 2nd Edition 40K, in a good way. :)
Some of the guys were saying Thru the Mud and Blood is good, I'm tempted.
-
Check your e-mail/PMs...

Check your e-mail/PMs...
Done, and thank you for the leads. :)
-
I know you mentioned modifying Bolt Action, I do have Bolt Action as well.
The 'Action near Le Cateau' thread features Bolt Action. Very little modification needed at all, even for early war.

Sweet! Thanx Robert, I'll take another look. :)

Tomorrow at Partizan James, myself and the team are presenting our take on the opening shots of the Verdun campaign with the events in the Bois Des Caures on the 22nd February 1916.
James kit-bashed a Colonel Driant model and gave it to me to paint on Thursday so after a quick paint job here he is, burning the paperwork after having to abandon the command bunker:

Really enjoying your work on this growing collection....excellent brushwork but especially like your take on Horizon Blue and the way you have shaded it
-
Very well done that man !
-
Thanks chaps.
Since Partizan my painting has progressed at a much more leisurely pace. However, I did polish off another dozen Frenchmen to add to the collection today.

As well as the French and Germans above, this weekend I also painted a FT-17 that I picked up from 1st Corps at the recent Partizan show. Although it's not suitable for our ongoing Verdun 1916 games I plan to use it in our later war games and it may also do some duty in our Spanish Civil War games.
A lovely model that is easy to assemble and a joy to paint.
