Title: Topiary
Post by: pacarat on 02 January 2015, 12:33:49 PM
Starting to populate what will become a park or formal garden. I painted the fish as marble/stone, rest as topiary plantings.

This pic shows original condition of some of the pieces. They are kids toy/craft stamps, with removable cover under figure. Found in a Goodwill bin for pennies each. The dinosaurs are simple hard plastic toys. The squirrel is a jewelry pendant from Hobby Lobby.

That's a lovely idea!  I shall certainly steal it!  Just glue and flock or something more sophisticated?

Thanks all...

Prime , then paint dark green. Once dry, mix white glue and medium green paint. Slather over figure and sprinkle flock all over. When dry, tap off excess, then fix with hairspray or dullcote.

Neat stuff! I did a few of these several years ago, I've always meant to do more as part of a park for my pulp city!

Here's mine:

Thanks...

@wirelizard - can you post larger sized pics? My eyes aren't what they used to be... :-)

Next steps:

some modular trimmed boxwood type hedges (like you would see in a maze).
gravel pathways using railroad ballast
Fountains - on order from Blacktree Design

I need to find some park benches, maybe an entry arch.

When googling topiary I came across some artwork where the topiary "animals" had come alive. Pic shows bare branches/roots where feet are, as if they have been pulled out of the ground. Very cool effect.

So now I'm looking through the lead pile for suitable animals I can modify.

Thought I had, but ImageShack was being stupid. (there's a good reason it's no longer my primary image dump...)

Turns out the original of that particular image was pretty tiny - back in 2009 I guess 500px wide was "full size".  :D

Thankfully, I still have the original photographs. Never throw anything out!

Here's a 2014-friendly version of the three pieces of topiary I did.

I like the large foliaged bases. Will have to do some like that.
