With ‘The World’s First SWAT Unit’ winging its way to me be grateful if for views on the following as I have not really gamed Pulp (gamed BoB lots) :
Do most Pulp rules allow you to do leader figures with supporting minions/police that work like a skirmish type games (leader plus 4 figs kinda thing)?
Are there any decent paper buildings out there that would work for 1920’s Shanghai (mix of European and Chinese building styles)?
-
You need to convince Bibbles to produce his Hong Kong 2 storey buildings on a commercial basis. He has some Chinese buildings but not shop types.
TVAG has some in his Mean Streets range. US based for Gangsters but parts may suit.

And black army production does some stuff for a 1930s range set in Shanghai.

Yes, that's how our Pulp Alley rules work. You can check out some of our battle reports at --- http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54250.0

What minis are those, Smirnoff? That sounds pretty neat! Are you talking about the Black Army stuff (linked by commissarmoody)?

No Fram, I'm going to be using Copplestone figs from Mark's Chinese Warlord range; clothed blokes from BU13, Bergmanns with caps from BU12, Chinese Officers and a couple of the firing blokes from BU7 as the Sykes Snipers. No doubt I'll have a dabble on conversions but I generally don't with Mark's figures as they are so well done.
Got a rather nice bus from Lledo that will convert for the Red Mariah
Just need to work out how to create all those buildings......
-
What I wouldn't give for more Copplestone pulp-era figures. Oh for Copplestone Nazis! I even thought about trying to convert some using stahlhelms, but none of the bodies are close enough to wehrmacht uniforms.
-
Fram, check the ones from Black Tree Design.
They have wehrmacht infantry and they are easy to convert if needed (some even have some nice heads that look similar to copplestone).
-
Actually I'm pestering someone on the WWII boards to see if the Foundry line (which seems to be agreed on as the best quality of the lines which are still in print) is close enough in size to the Copplestone line. Here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=74154.0
My understanding is that almost all the extant WWII ranges are of older make, and are all on the small side, but maybe not?
Anyway, better to continue this discussion there instead of cluttering up Smirnoff's thread.

Black Army Production seems to be off duty. After long waiting, I got my money sent back via Paypal. It's a pity, they've got nice stuff.

Uh-oh, cos I just ordered with them after seeing the link in this thread...
-
Dang! That stinks - they have some nice stuff.
-
That's lame, don't know why they are taking a break.

yeh but have you seen the shanghai cops at the bottom of the linked page? they are bad sculpts and the paint job doesn't help - the rest look ok, adequate enough sculpts.

Whoa.

Crazy man! Dig the beat!

Brilliant, if I stare for long enough at the picture, I start hearing music!

That is so cool, Hammers! :-* :-*
I really like how you did the sign, but the use of "Ms." in front of Willie's name seems an unsual choice to me. I'm no expert of course.

Certainly anachronistic for the 20s, Ms came with womens lib in the 60s, she would have definitely been Miss Willie Scott.

Smirnoff, Bob Murch would probably tell you how he scratch built his "China Station" buildings. If I recall correctly, he used corduroy material soaked in white glue for the curved roofs. There's an image from Trumpeter Salute (a Pacific Northwest convention) here:

A lot of the buildings in Shanghai would have been much larger. In recent years I read some books and watched some movies that where set in Shanghai, including one book by Bartle Bull. Building some parts of old Shanghai would be a worthy project.
And check out the buildings in this LAF thread:

Thanks warrenbruhn
More I think about this the more I'm inclined to go the outskirts of Shanghai route...ghost market and port kind of thing.
More useful for other places.
The idea of doing the centre of the British settlement (colonial style office blocks/banks etc) would work with the Sarissa and 4ground stuff but I think I will avoid it.
That Bob Murch link is useful, thanks.

Hey, those links look familiar... :D
Haven't yet wandered Shangai-ward in our pulp gaming, mostly because nobody's committed to doing Chinese gangs and other locals, but the Sarissa buildings would certainly suit for the European areas of the city, with some extra Chinese signs and such added for local flavour.
Bob Murch's China Station setup is amazing; two years ago he had a couple of new buildings in progress that he brought along to Trumpeter Salute - his level of craftsmanship is spectacular! His tile roofs are indeed corduroy material over a curved form of either card or carved/sanded styrofoam, hardened with white glue. They look great.
-
I'don't love to see Chinatown style roof add-ons for the Sarissa City Block buildings!

You mean you think he/she is crossgender.

Ah. You live and learn. A bit of editing is called for I believe.

There was a rumour that Empress were looking to do a Shanghai 1920s/30s range. Now that would be good!

Empress Shanghai 1920/30s ?!?! :o :o :o Ooooh, I see a big :o big hole in my wallet!!

That would truly be a most acceptable development. :D
