Prompted by a recent thread by Anatoli showing some of his great brushwork on a recent Vampire Count I have been thinking of expanding my miniatures line to include some gothic horror figures and in particular Dracula and some of the characters from the classic book.
I have over the years collected many versions of the Count/master vampire in 28mm. Most of these have been in the Bela Lugosi/Christopher Lee style with cloak and suit or more of the Nosferatu creature style. I am now wondering if there is a different look that you would like the figure depicted with?
I am quite serious about having the figure sculpted and I have my own ideas as to how I would like to show him. However I would very much like your opinion on how you would like to see him:
Clothes, cloak, suit, something different?
Old/Young?
Christpoher Lee face/Gary Oldman long hair and moustache etc
Type of pose, attacking, standing looking menacing etc?
Tell me your ideal version and we will see where we go? :)
-
Sombrero and poncho?
;)
Actually, forget Lee and Oldman. I think you'll find I was the definitive Dracula :D
-
Don't have an ideal version, but...
I'm sure there were the several versions of the Oldman characterizations in the old Leading Edge figs spin offs of the movie, but I, for one, would be delighted to see versions more in keeping with current scales. Especially with tophat, shades, and thin mustache.
I keep hearing Marisa Tomei saying 'Oh, yeah, you blend...' lol

I have to say that I hate everything about the Oldman version of Dracula except the look. I adore the look of that horrible movie & can watch it just for that reason. I like the tophat mustache look, I even dig the old man with the giant "hair-hat" thing going on. Always liked the wolf & bat forms as well... I guess I like almost everything about that movie as long as I'm watching it with no sound.

lol El Vlad

I'd definitely be in on this if it was by the same sculptor who does your Boot Hill range. Personally, I would much rather see an historical look than a 1950s horror film look. The Coppola movie is definitely a great reference, and I thought the old leading-edge games figs were very good. You could also maybe look at something more Slavic? What were Russian and Eastern European nobles wearing in the late 19th century? Perhaps an untapped influence there. Dracula in his castle before coming to London could even be more like a Vlad Tepes figure?
-
Go for an old one and a modern one ;)

May be on to something here; the armored Dracula by Oldman was interesting, but not as much as his other forms.

Both Louis Jordan and Frank Langella portrayed Dracula brilliantly. In figure terms though, both similar to the "classic" Chris Lee in appearance.

If anyone else was asking, this, with my preference towards a Marvel Dracula Lives type but as it is you and in fear of repeating myself it would have to be

I agree.Look forward to seeing what you come up with :)

A quick search for Vlad the Impaler brought this up.

The combination of coat and hat work for me but not the banner! The pose might work too.

In that direction, how about Count Chocula?
"The combination of coat and hat work for me but not the banner! The pose might work too."
The artist did a fine job of translating the portrait. I was more thinking sprawled on a throne. Mashing your image and mine, we approach Viggo the Carpathian... lol
"On a mountain of skulls in a castle of pain, I sat on a throne of blood."

I quite like how our interests seem to intersect. I will buy 5! lol lol
The only current offerings being the Old Glory miniatures (which I have most of), I think you could do well with this.
I always find it strange how none of the depictions of the count bear any resemblance to the 'original' Dracula, being Vlad Tepes.
-
I love that illustration Andy, that fur coat is a must. ;D
I will certainly be using the original description of the Count as per Stoker's novel which does resemble that of the portrait complete with moustache. ;)
I'm liking where this is going. :)
-
I love that illustration Svennn, a self portrait version is a must

Fixed that for you :D

I would buy this! It's a great idea. TAG has their historical version, but it's well, historical. Something a little more fantastic would be great

Fixed that for you :D
lol lol lol

Sombrero and poncho?
lol - now that I would like to see!
I would want a figure that could be usable in the 18th century as much as the 19th century, which poses little problem to old Vlad.
Long hair, maybe a mustache, tall, elegant build - not bulky, long fur lined coat for sure, cravat and high collar (see image), NO cape, mouth wide open fangs bared, more rustic noble than opera fan. A sheathed saber would be nice too.
Also a nice touch would be a none "vampiric" version of him, ie more human looking. Go on get to it Nic. ;)

I second Svennn's suggestion, but with a huge Hagrid-type character as his manservant.
:D
-
Uuuh!
A 'two version' thing. I like the idea of that. You could have the vampire as a 'human looking' and with fang and claw attack mode. The scenario ideas already start!

Not Hagrid

Sigh ::)

Are we still discussing the vampire thing? We could open another thread for that otherwise? ;) ;D

Thinking out loud for starters' figures sculpted as follows:
1- Old version in long fir coat and C18/19th Clothes and boots. Long grey hair, long moustache. The book gives him pointy ears which I am not sure about. Fangs bared in threatening pose.
2- old version lying in coffin/crate.
3- Younger version in Victorian attire with long overcoat with fir collar and cuffs, top hat, long hair and moustache. Standing, non threatening leaning on walking stick with wolfs head handle
4- Three brides of Dracula(I have a plan for these, but would you go for standing looking seductive or aggressive fangs bared?
5- A pack of loyal Szgany/ gypsies with swords, knives and muskets.
6- male/female Vampires recently turned, dressed in Victorian clothes. Aggressive feral poses fanged bared etc.
Then I will look at the Vampire hunters. What do you think so far, thoughts/ideas/comments?
-
You can never have enough gypsies.

Sounds cool - not sure about the pointy ears either?
2- old version lying in coffin/crate.
Great, but make him removable so we can stick him in other things/places.
3- Younger version in Victorian attire with long overcoat with fir collar and cuffs, top hat, long hair and moustache. Standing, non threatening leaning on walking stick with wolfs head handle
Sounds nice.
4- Three brides of Dracula(I have a plan for these, but would you go for standing looking seductive or aggressive fangs bared?
Awesome, but got to be fangs bared - then of course a set of seductive would be cool too.
5- A pack of loyal Szgany/ gypsies with swords, knives and muskets.
Oh yes please, the more the merrier.
6- male/female Vampires recently turned, dressed in Victorian clothes. Aggressive feral poses fanged bared etc.
Sounds good too.
Ok Nick - sounds sorted mate. ;)
-
This all sounds excellent Nick. I'm assuming they would be the size of your Boot Hill figures? Would that mean they'd be ok with West Wind, Foundry, etc?

Yep, 28s compatible with most other ranges.
After Matthew has finished the latest Boot Hill sculpts I'll ask him if he is interested in doing these.
-
I might have to have a go at my idea anyway... :D
-
Some excellent options there, I'd be interested in getting some of those.
-
I've just had another idea.....I know you say you already have a Christopher Lee version, but what about commissioning one from that Ernst Veingart fellow? Crooked Dice seem to be using him more and more. He has a knack of being able to sculpt perfect representations of peoples faces! You only have to look at their newer Dr Who figures....

A perfect one of Christopher Lee might be cool?
-
Wow! I'd be so on board with all this! Sign me up now!
If we are wish-listing here and still sticking to Dracula and his posse, then I think you also need thralls. What about a Renfield figure? Something in a straitjacket? Can't remember if there were any other thralls in the book aside from the gypsies. I did love the coachman from the Coppola movie as well, but clearly that had nothing to do with the book.

I like those ideas, all of them :)
Maybe a version of the "freshly-turned into a vampire" Vlad (like in the posted pic) to add to the collection?
Usable for game set in the 15th century ;)
-
I'd be down for a set, it seems to hit all the right notes. Wolves, bats, rats & Renfields non-withstanding.
-
Do a modern one and an old one ;)
cheers

I always wanted a version like this:
-
Christopher Lee or Max Shrek would be perfect. Maybe Dracula through TV and Movie history versions, why stop at one. Then we could have different Van Velsings, think about a great Peter Cushing.
-
@White Knight I said it first... lol
Stoker's Dracula is hideously ancient, but the novel is Victorian modern, never forget.
As for 1), if you do go with long ears, then he should be either totally Max, or on the way. Cadaverous head on a robust body might be a bit weird, though.
To others, at least. I like it!

I always wanted a version like this:
I've got one, from a box set of minis produced from the film. Hoping to find the rest soon, they got sold or packed away when I quit the hobby some twenty years ago! Found Drac though.

Leading Edge Miniatures IIRC.
-
Jack Palance would be great too. Gene Colan based his Marvel Dracula after him. Wotta great face!

-
For me I would like to see seductive female vampires in erotic lesbian poses and a must would have to be akin to the cult classic 1910 Nosferatu.
-
Do it! Do it! Do it!!! If anyone is going to get this project right old chum, it's you.
Good to see you will offer different varieties.
-
5- A pack of loyal Szgany/ gypsies with swords, knives and muskets.
I'd be in for those
I'd also like a hunchback, a dwarf and a tall thin henchmen
