Title: My WWW2 Soviets - NEW PICS ADDED
Post by: Bullshott on 13 September 2008, 10:07:56 AM
Inspired by Pappa Midnight and others on this board, I've finally succumbed to the madness that is WWW2. My initial force is going to be based around a Soviet platoon using mainly Copplestone Neo-Sovs. I like these because of their 'not quite historical' uniforms - heavily based on WW2 uniforms but with subtle changes that could easily have happened within a few years of 1945 in an alternate history. I'm also a sucker for guns with drum mags!

The first batch will be standard out-of-the-blister infantry, to be followed be some converted partizans (to add some campaign variations to the clothing), then some head-changed infantry using SOTR heads. I don't like the Copplestone command pack, so I will replace these with converted infantry and suitable figures I find from other ranges that will blend in.

Enough of the waffle, here are the first three figures that I completed last night:

I'd forgotten all about those Neo-Soviets!
They look ideal for "1945+" troops.
Very cool so far and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest as you do them.

How do they combare to Artizan, Westwind scale-wise?

I spent the afternoon at Colours with one of my Copplestone Neo-Sovs in my pocket to compare against other ranges. They are certainly too large for Darkson and Westwind SOTR (althought the separate SOTR heads are compatible) - a pity, since I like the styling of some of the SOTR and on the Westwind stand they had packs of separate weapons for them (containing a mix of the rifles, SMGs, etc on the packs released to date, plus a couple of RPGs).

As for Artizan, these are closer in height and bulk to Copplestone, but still slightly smaller. I bought their three cossack soldiers and will be converting them in due course to mix in with my Neo-Sovs.

I also picked up a couple more packs of the standard Neo-Sov infantry to do head changes with plus the command pack (seeing the figures up close I have changed my mind about them and they should look good when finished).

Good call Lowtardog, I was actually thinking of getting their IG Vostroyan heavy bolter team and converting it to suit my forces (basically changing their coats into greatcoats and maybe a head change on one). It would mean a fair bit of work, but as I said when I started this thread: I'm a sucker for guns with drum mags.

However, looking at the various IG options there are a lot of useful items. Especially the plastic Cadian heavy weapons team and some of the metal heavy weapons troops for the regiments listed on the online store. With the availability of the SOTR separate heads this opens up a whole lot of options. I will have to reconsider which packs I go for ...

How about posting a picture or two of your Copplestones and GW figs together?

Those are looking excellent!
They would look quite at home in a Weird War setting or Near Future, two uses for the price of one!!

BTW:Thanks for the info on the size of the minis.

Great to see these painted up. I have a load to do but have been undecided about the colours to use...camo or not...summer or winter...or a mixture...might just have to copy yours ;)

For me the weird war always conjurs up dark, cold moody scenes so I would go for a wintery style thing if I did it.

Nice stuff Bullshott

Those look sweet.  Every time I see those drum mags on the AKs I think of the crazy 12 gauge shotgun AK with the drum magazine.  They poped up in all the gun shops here in Texas a few years back.  Nothing like hunting with a 15 round magazine for those really tough pheasant or ducks. ;D  Us Americans and our toys.

Since I am getting on well with painting riflemen, I now need to consider what heavy weapons I will arm my Soviet platoon with. I already have in mind a suitable crew-served support weapon, but need to get some troops with AT weapons to give thema  suitable 'edge' against German armour and other hard-to-kill weird stuff.

I will either arm my AT troops with panzerfausts or RPGs from The Assault Group. However, in looking at TAG's online catalogue I thought it might be possible to convert either some of their modern Soviets or NVA (with SOTR head changes plus some greenstuff) to match my Copplestone figures. Does anyone know how the TAG modern and Vietnamese figures scale compared with Copplestones?

The TAG modern and 'Nam range are by different sculptors. I'd think the Vietnam range is more in line with their WW2 range, which is rather smallish. The modern range has more bulk, but I don't know how big they are.

You might also look at OOP GW Valhallans, they go rather well with the copplestone neo-sov's.

Thanks for that WK. So it looks like if I go this route I will have to go for the TAG modern range. I think I will gets a pack to try, as I need to place an order for more TAG weapons to convert to go with my Soviets.

I looked at the Valhalans on GW's online store and you are right - they would look very nice alongside my Copplestones. However, I'm certainly not going to be shelling out the prices they are asking for. Must ask around if anyone has some of these surplus and check out bring-and-buys at shows.

I sold mine, but you can find them regularly on ebay...

I second the Valhallans. You just need to shave off the Empire eagle.
I use them as neo sovs with Copplestones partizans.
Chiltern soviets are bigger and cruder sculpts and I use them as Ilyanov human-ape crossbreeds. Yet to be painted though...

Here are the latest additions to my Soviets:

Scouts
These are the first of my scout section. To differentiate them from the rest of my troops I have gone for a more non-uniform look, with a mix of cold-weather clothing. Figures are Coppestone partizans, with minor greenstuff changes to their clothing.

More riflemen.
Figures are Coppestone Neo-Sovs with Westwind SOTR heads.

Next up will be more support weapons and some command figures.
