Title: What Napoleonic Battle would you put on if you had the time and figs ?
Post by: LawnRanger on 10 January 2015, 03:30:49 PM
Hi Lads
My club will be doing a whole weekend gaming :-*, 20+hrs gaming/playing
So I was thinking what Battles have you put on and worked well in the past. I think we will have 4 players per side any bigger and I think it slows down the games .

We will be using Age of Eagles which is a division / corps game  (the standard unit will be a brigade  1 stand=380men )so you will have 6-12 stands in a brigade . and around 20-40 stands in a division and around   70 stands in a corps .

Some people said about just bring what you like but in the end it ends up in a arms race  with too many guns and elite stuff on the table !

I would like to keep it historical so am thinking of Leipzig/Dresden ?

Would like to hear what you would do play or played ! It looks like we will have around 20 members for the whole weekend so I think there will be quiet a few Big games !that weekend  :)

Happy gaming LR

I'd like to set up Malojaroslavetz once I get round to painting several hundred Italians and several hundred more Russians. The Italians don't get nearly enough credit for their 1812 campaign contribution imho.

I would pick a battlefield but then do a "see what army you have" thing where you roll through a table until you have enough units/stands per person

Something like this:

Roll 2d6
2-6  Line Infantry
7  Cavalry
8-9  Light Infantry
10 Foot Artillery*
11-12  Horse Artillery*
* because of the distribution of 2d6, this is pretty much equal odds

Adjust to taste.

And for each thing roll a d6 with 1 being low quality and 6 being elite.  So if a player rolls Cavalry for their Division and then lucks out and rolls a 6 they can take their division as Guard Cavalry.  So they might start off by claiming the 2nd Guard Lancer Regiment.  You can go around in turns or have the two sides split off and get it done independently.  So while the French player rolled that Guard Cavalry, someone else might roll, get a 4 and then roll a 1 and claim some Landwher or some partizans or civilian militia.  That sort of thing.

If you arrange your chart with the orders of battle for the battle you have in mind then you should get two mostly historical forces, appropriate to the scenario.

If you run out of miniatures, roll again.
