Title: Some terrain for SAGA.
Post by: Barry S on 12 January 2015, 10:10:27 AM
Hi,

These pieces have been sitting around for quite sometime waiting to be finished off. Feeling somewhat inspired after I finished painting a 28mm miniature of Hereward the Wake a few days ago, I decided to finish them off.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/LeadBear/Misc%20Terrain/P1120296_zps2517d55a.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/LeadBear/media/Misc%20Terrain/P1120296_zps2517d55a.jpg.html)
They are scrap offcuts of MDF and the blue isn't nearly as bright in the flesh.
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/LeadBear/Misc%20Terrain/P1120299_zps01af11e1.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/LeadBear/media/Misc%20Terrain/P1120299_zps01af11e1.jpg.html)
I have been creating some 15mm single based units for games such as SAGA, Song of Blade and Heroes, etc using the left over miniatures I have had laying around, utilising the 'Dip' method. This is a 15mm version of Hereward the Wake with some Anglo-Dane Huscarls.

This is the miniature that 'motivated' me to finish these pieces. It is is the 28mm Hereward the Wake miniature sold by Gripping Beast. Like the 15mm miniatures above, he has also been painted and finished off using the dip method with some touching up afterwards. I noticed he probably needs another coat of Dullcote.

One of the other items I finished, albeit a while ago, was a ruined Roman villa. This was inspired by an article in Wargames Illustrated #305. I think I will dull down the red paintwork around the side of the building a bit more.

Thanks for looking.

Wonderful Barry  :o  :-*
Tufts can create amazing effects can't they? You've used these brilliantly well.
And the ruined villa is a triumph. Really top stuff. Well done.

Really, really nice, that villa is a triumph. :-*

I remember my school play back in the 1970's was a musical version of the Hereward the Wake story. lol

Nice swamp, an original way to do one, must copy that. How did you do the villa floor? Is it printed?

Very nice, both the swamps and the Villa! And great to see that other people are also doing SAGA in 15mm...

Thank you very much for the kind words. They are greatly appreciated.

I’m especially chuffed with regards to the comments regarding the tufts as they were made by me  :)

The marsh was a bit of an experiment. I wasn't particularly happy with how some of the tufts of one particular colour originally turned out, but I thought they may well work on marsh bases. Normally for reeds and marshes I drill a hole through the base of the board and thread coloured sisal string through and glue it into place, which is one reason the boards pieces have been sitting around for awhile.

Using the longer tufts was much easier and a lot quicker.

The mosaics were taken from Google Images and resized to fit the rooms. The Villa is based heavily on the model used in the '1066 And All That' article in Wargames Illustrated #305.

That's exactly the sort of idea that I would singularly fail to think of  lol

You made the tufts? Wow, nice work. May I ask how? They look better than some shop bought ones I've seen.

You made the tufts? Wow, nice work. May I ask how? They look better than some shop bought ones I've seen.

They are made using a rather dodgy static grass applicator I made using a tutorial from YouTube  :)

This is just one of the many tutorials on how to make the applicator and the one that convinced me to give it a go - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSr2ZNOn4yc
And this explains how to make the tufts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8b32zzFZCI

I only decided to make my own as I was using quite a few tufts on commission pieces and I thought it would be a way of reducing the cost to my customers. It also allowed me to not be so conservative with the tufts as I found it could be quite addictive.

Up to that point I was using and still do use, the tufts sold by Silfor/Mininatur Tufts and those sold by Tajima, which are great and probably my favourites - http://www.tajima1.co.uk/index.asp

I can't remember if the tutorial gives any warnings, but you need to be careful when using it as it can give you a bit of a shock if you're not careful. However, that may well be down to my poor workmanship and the tool using it (i.e.: me), and not the tool itself  :)

Cheers,

Barry

Thanks Barry. That sounds both intriguing and worrying at the same time!
