Title: Short female armour article
Post by: beefcake on 13 January 2015, 09:31:55 PM
I ready this article.
http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/05/boob-plate-armor-would-kill-you
Makes some very good points about practical armour for females.

Yep. Not the first time I've seen an article try and point that out.

Most of the silly nonsense we know doesn't bug me much, but that's a point that sticks. Bare bits and other impractical things are silly and all, but they're not actively self-defeating in the same way a breastplate that's designed to crush your chest is.

Hmmmm. Sci-fi, historical or fantasy?

There was once a Citadel fighter model which was a sturdy female Valkyrie type. Basically she just had a chain hauberk, helm and shield, with a few operatic flowing bits of cloth. Not sexy (unless you like them really big), not saucy, just practical.

So who gets the best woman in armour award in minis then?

Red Box Games has a whole bunch of rather sensibly armoured women who are tough as nails and full of character.

For 15mm, Peter Pig's female vikings are quite good: http://www.peterpig.co.uk/range9_vykings.htm (http://www.peterpig.co.uk/range9_vykings.htm)
For 28mm, have a look at:

Hm, I just realize those are all in chain mail - seems I haven't found a realistic set of plate armor on female minis yet...

Cheers

Does it also work for tall female armour?

Seconding this.

For Sci-Fi, I'd say Kev White must have more than a few on the Hasslefree site.

I'll get me coat, then. ;D Though yeah, Tor.com is a bit Social Justice Warrior-y, but this time I agree. The design of a lot of female armour in pop culture is so poor and obviously centred around the male gaze, that even boob plates can seem 'normal'.

Did I link to Repair Her Armor (http://repair-her-armor.tumblr.com/) before? Updates seem to have stalled and some of the redrawers you wish could draw in the first place, but as a big ol' showcase of rubbish female armour it does it's job showing just how widespread the problem is.

Scurv: following the Tor article... The Assault Group (http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/index.php?prod=1439)?
