As if i didn't have enough things to distract me from my current Three Musketeers project, things here at Oxiana Towers have taken on a distinctly Doctor Who-flavoured tint of late. None of your swivel-eyed David Tennant stuff either (though I'm a fan of that too), but real old-school Who.
Here's the first offering - I'll post some more in the coming days. Like my Eureka musketeers, the Second Doctor here is in 40mm. He's a Fine Art Castings mini from the mid 1980s.

Very nice, excellent details :)
-
Very nice - You have got to love that Patrick Troughton pudding bowl haircut. :)
-
Love it. Oh, the memories :)
-
Wonderful!!! Makes me want for a bag of prawn flavored crisps and one of those sherbert things...the one that looks like some sort of IED...anyways, perfect paintjob and killer model to boot.
-
Thanks everyone - you can have the Peter Davison Doctor tomorrow as a treat. I'm out of sherbet dabs though, sorry!
-
Lovely work! He looks like he's about to spring off the page. :-*
-
Wow thats a spot on job looks just like him. Any 40mm billie pipers?
-
Here are some more pictures for you.
As promised, today's Doctor is number Five. Peter Davison is never particularly celebrated as one of the great Doctors, but I have a soft spot for him as I can remember my entire family around the television for the much-trailed regeneration, as we all wondered who Tom Baker was going to turn into. Happy days.

I discovered too late the trick to painting pinstripes with this model: do them first! Then you won't basically finish the mini, then realise you still have to do the stripes and then worry that every wobbly line is going to ruin the figure!
I also finished at the same time one of the Fifth Doctor's companions, the ever so slightly shifty Turlough:
And finally, I guess this mini should need no introduction, except to say that rather than being an old 1980s Fine Art Castings model it is in fact a perfectly scaled keyring from British high street stalwart Marks & Spencer...

Oops, forgot this:
Any 40mm billie pipers?
Monolith/Graven Images do two 'Travelling Do-gooders" in 40mm, which are actually the Ninth Doctor and Rose (www.monolithdesigns.co.uk/dystopia.htm). They're on my list to buy - they also do a bunch of spooky alien gasmask kids asking 'Are you my mummy?' from the Empty Child/Doctor Dances story.
Anyway, if I get back to the paint pots, you can have another mini tomorrow...

I've always been a Peter Davidson fan. It's probably got a bit to do with the cricket connection, but to me he's second only to Tom Baker in the "classic" Doctors league table. You've done him proud with your painting :D
I always thought it was a shame that Mr Ecclestone left so early, but that Tennant chappie was inspired casting and he's currently number one, IMO ;)

My favourite is always going to be Jon Pertwee, but you are right Tennant has done a fine job, its a shame Ecclestone turned it in after just one series as he was good too.
Great painting on the Davidson figure. You have the colour scheme spot on. Do you have a Pertwee figure too. ;) :)

You can tell we are the same age Mal, for me the beginning was Jon Pertwee and he is my favorite Doctor, Tom Baker was my second he was in it for so long and some of my favorite episodes are his. I liked Peter Davidson but then they started messing about with the schedules and Cornation Street kept winning out cos the bill payer liked it.
Now its been rejuvenated I just love David Tennant he is great.
Oxiana - your painting is well good. Stripes scare the hell out of me but you have done really well.

Thanks all. We're our own worst critics, so I look at those pinstripes and can see all the bits I got wrong, so it's very heartening to hear get such kind comments.
John Pertwee was cool, no mistaking. Always reversing the polarity of the neutron flow... I missed out on him the first time around, but I was such a fan as a kid I went on our local Cubs' outing to the theatre in London to see him play Worzel Gummidge on the stage, just so I could say I'd seen the Doctor. Now, there's an admission!
I'll see what I can do about a Pertwee mini , but in the meantime, here's his greatest nemesis. Roger Delgado was the definitive Master in my book:

That's your lot for now. In true Doctor Who cliff-hanger ending fashion, I'll leave you the promise of what's up next week: a certain Brigadier and the start of a some proper monsters...

You're not alone lol

nice work and nice to see some vintage fine art castings :)

Nice job with those minis, and it's nice to see a Dalek or two wherever the heck I go

Thanks artwho9 - praise indeed from someone who runs a pretty definitive guide to painted Doctor Who minis. If anyone hasn't seen that website, they should check it out, it's great stuff. And you'll also be able to see from where I stole the idea for how to paint the Fifth Doctor's pinstripes!

Thanks oxiana for the compliment and its nice to know someones looking at the site :)

Here's the next instalment of Doctor Who. As promised, some bad guys!
We'll start with another couple of pepperpots, this time in their classic livery:
A potato-headed Sontaran:
Some late-era Cybermen:
These came from a pack containing wounded cybermen, hence a couple of them clutching onto themselves. The guns should really have red barrels, but the sculpts aren't great and it looks more like they're holding cosmic hairdryers! I might come back to these minis later with a fresh eye and paintbrush to see if I can improve them.
Here's a Raston Robot, who has possibly just shot those Cybermen, as it did in 'The Five Doctors':
I've always loved the Zygons, and they' probably be on top of my list of monsters to bring back in the new Who:
That's it for today. Thanks to the joys of eBay, I now have all the remaining Doctors (up to and including Colin Baker). They're based and primed, and next on the list, along with the Brigadier and a couple of other UNIT chaps.
Enjoy!
And finally, wearing the latest in fish-net fashion, a Sea Devil:

they are all so strangely thin.... odd sculpts.... maybe I'm just too used to 28's....
-
Great stuff, It brings back happy memories seeing these, takes me back to the 1970s-1980s. :)
-
nice work on those and look forward to more :)
-
I'm still not entirely happy with some of those recent paint jobs - I thin I might re-do the Sontaran, as he seems too cartoony with those huge eyes, and should probably have darker skin

Fair point. Some of the sculpts are - well, they're a bit boring, frankly. Very static (the Sea Devil and Sontaran in particular), but then again these are old, old minis. Strangely, the monsters seem to be the lifeless ones. The minis of the Doctor have a lot more character. I now have all the remaining Doctors that FAC produced and will get my brushes out as soon as I get the chance.
[BTW, interesting the compare the Sontaran here with the Harlequin minis - such as those on anevilgiraffe's excellent blog.
-
They look awesome! Especially the daleks!
-
Here are two more minis straight off the painting line.
First up is William Hartnell, the first Doctor. Lovely mini this, really captures his slightly grumpy attitude, and always with his hands clutching his lapels:
Sadly, Hartnell never got to interact with this fine fellow, the Brigadier:
Still on the workbench: Tom Baker just needs his scarf finishing, then he'll be up next. Then John Pertwee and finally (when I get my head around painting his coat), Colin Baker. After that, I think I might take a rest!
-
Very nice - Looking forward to Jon Pertwee - but then you knew that ;) :D

Ah, the dreaded scarf! It was bad enough trying to do it with the BTD 28mm figure, I hate to think of it in 40mm with the extra demands of authenticity lol
These really are great figures and I can't wait to see the rest :)

Yes, well I chickened out of the fine check that should William Hartnell should technically be wearing. I owned this mini about 15 years ago and still have the shivers about attempting it back then. Actually, I'm just relieved that this mini line stopped before Sylvester McCoy appeared. I don't fancy trying to match artwho9's job on the BTD figure:

That's just awesome, it makes me cry a little...

Yes, the costume is pretty awful, but the miniature rendition is superb!

I had a bit of time this weekend to finish another Doctor:
I'm probably not alone in thinking that Tom Baker is the archetypal Doctor. He was a the helm of the Tardis when I started watching as a kid. My only problem with this mini is that he really should be offering a bag of jellybabies (the BTD mini gets it right in 28mm). However, if you can't bear their absence, check out this YouTube clip, where EVERY Tom Baker jelly baby clip has been spliced together:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfisgGuuUD8
Very funny - even David Tennant wasn't cheeky enough to offer Davros any confectionary!
-
Thats a really good paint job there :o The scarf is cool

Considering the lacklustre castings, you've done a nice job with what you had available. I was never really into Dr.Who, my experience being limited to the Peter Cushing movie version of the mid 1960's. I do remember the Daleks, though, and am eagerly awaiting Airfix's large scale version. I may even consider purchasing their T.A.R.D.I.S. kit, containing figures of the David Tennant Doctor and Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones, more for the 'vehicle' than anything else, although the likenesses are supposed to be excellent.
-
Wow! That Dalek kit is definitely on my Christmas list now!
-
Almost there...
Jon Pertwee (especially for Malamute, who has been waiting for him - sorry it's taken so long!):

Thank you, my favourite Dr :D
Excellent job, I have enjoyed seeing these come together. :)
-
OK, this is the last mini for a while...
Colin Baker, a much under-rated Doctor. And probably the most brightly coloured mini I've painted in years! I wouldn't lay claim that his coat is painted 100% accurately, but I'm happy enough to capture the character of it.

Dodge asked:
is it good painting 40mm minis?
Yes, they're great. I only got back into painting a year or so ago after a dozen years away, and my old collection long passed into obscurity. The slightly larger size gave me the confidence to start painting again, and then I realised I really enjoyed them. I'm not so bothered about the lack of ranges compared to 28mm (I do paint those as well though), these are more for fun than gaming per se.
So that's it from the Doctor for a while. I do have more minis from this range - and some Tardis and conversion plans too - but I'm travelling for work from next week for a month, so I won't be painting anything for a little while. Well done anyone who bothered to see this thread through until the end! I'll leave you with a snap of a happy Time Lord family:
