Hello! Ok, lets see if this can get finished in time, happy Feb 2015 people!
Cheers
Matt

You've got loads of time yet :)

This is what I'm doing.

The centerpoint of the build is a blacksmithy. The plan is to use a flashing led for the fire.
Just a quick blocking in of the shanties in foamcore. ;) they shall be clad in corrugated Card.

What's that sticky white and black thing? A removeable moisture condenser ;)
Cheers
Matt.

Looking good - whats the Ice or Fire bit going to be?
-
Looking very promising, Bertie!

This is looking great already!

Liking the look of it Matt. :)

I should have read the details and not just looked at the pictures :?

Multi-purposing!
I like your thinking.
:D
-
Looks good Bertie(I like that)!
-
I think this will be a really good gaming piece Matt. I'll swap you a cold storage facility for it! lol
-
I like your idea of a flashing light.
I might nick this idea.

On your bike Eric ;) lol lol
Thanks lads. :D It is penciled to fit in OW, Retro SciFi, Post Apoc, and a Goblin cavern town.. o_o
I'm mostly worried about timing to get this finished, but we will see how we go. Im doing a little each morning and night to let the PVA glue on the timber frame dry. So its progressing slowly.
I've also cut up some scale corrugated iron sheeting.
Next photo when I've finished the timber frame for the smithy.

I might nick this idea.
Go for it Tony! Pop it in your build. :D

See how we go, I may be attached to it after the month is through ;)
But if you win the comp i'll take you up on your offer lol lol lol lol
Cheers

You're powering along!
-
Very quick! That is an awesome start. I'm beginning to feel a little out of my depth the more I look at other people's work.
-
Don't stress - just remember to have fun. That's what I want to get out of this (There's a few of us who aren't on the summit - but at least we can see it ;) ).

There's a summit? lol
-
A summit? You mean the volcano Von Lucky?? ;)
I think I may have peaked... ;) get it?

Looking good constable. That will be a lot of corrugated iron on that base. Are you making your own or shelling out the cash?
There's a summit? lol
More a plateau or a knoll. I know it is a gentile rise in the ground. :D
Snitchy sends.
-
Corrugated card my friend. I don't mind shelling out $4 for a sheet as big as my torso. :D 1/56 "scale" corrugations are not my cup of tea. ;)
In other news, the coffee stirers have been washed and the shanties are clad in corrugations.

For the eagle eyed, well done. I have changed the layout of the buildings in the 'back' of the board. I hadn't calculated the height of the buildings into the space required for figure placement along the alleyways. It's still tight but with this slight shuffle it's a lot better.
And look at that! Two flickering tea light bases, hacked, modified, wires soldered and glued together. What a electronics master I am. ::)
I was considering putting 2 batteries and 2 LESs in parallel, but I had no idea what volts the led were, and I didn't have any resistors.. so cheap way forward. Use what I have. Thus I will be doing 2 circuits for the 2 LEDs. This has the added benifit that the flicker won't be in time with the 2 lights.
I am also running plenty of length so that when a led goes I can replace it. :/
Next to undercoat shanties, fix forge wiring , solve forge fire itself, clad forge with corrugated..... Blah blah blah ...
Cheers
Matt.

Soldering, led lights… you are taking this all to the next level on your way to the summit 8)
Will there be any more electrical gadgets besides the lights?
-
Brilliant, Bertie.
Just brilliant.

I didn't have a soldering iron, so I bought one. Thought it would be a little more durable than electrical tape.
Sadly Pocoloco, just the lights. I'm trying to 'Keep Is Simple Stupid' ::)
Thanks Pablo!!
Cheers
Matt.

I'm curious to see the lights in action now - this looks brilliant. 8) 8) 8)

Your wish is my command.

The shanties have received a light indercoat to help the paint stick to the metallic card surface, and the wiring is glued in place. :D
-
Nice! 8)
Soon you will want to add more less for sure :)
-
Great result with the wiring Matt. 8)
-
Thanks! 8)
Now finish it :D This is getting to be a very interesting layout 8) 8)
-
My own flickering Tea Light will be muck simpler - it has to be, as I'll ham-fisted when it comes to soldering.

A wee update for you all. This evening after dinner while watching a Louis Theroux doc, I've clad the forge in corrugated iron.

This is starting to look the part!
-
I've blocked in some colour while the forge tests continue to dry.

Coming along nicely.
-
Great and once again another build that is so much further along than my own.....
Tony
-
That's looking really good Matt - it'll look great in the dark .... Lots of creepy shadows!
-
Thanks Karsten, Tony and Steve. It will certainly cast some shadows and it's got lots of narrow alleys to shoot down. I'm thinking of it as a cave/dungeon in that regards and may build a few more boards... Not sure yet. I think it needs a friend though ;)
A little update. I've lightly weathered the corrugated shanties, still a bit to go in this build and a bit of detailing. I ordered an O scale anvil and tools, and I'll need to knock up a tressle table for the 'market' behind the forge, plus give it a tarp for a roof. And all the ground work.
Any tips or ideas to scatter terrain a shanty?
Anyway here's a picture As a reward for reading all that :)

Tires, fuel/water cans, timber (for building stuff and fires), and general tat.
-
Everythkng Karsten said, especially tat. Humans are terrible creators of mess!
-
want more tat - Break up a die cast car...doors, bonnet, windscreen etc
Looking great
-
Looking great, but I agree this requires more clutter.
-
Very neat build. you really nailed the random home made structures and I can't wait to see more.
Any tips or ideas to scatter terrain a shanty?
Clothes lines, rubbish piles, soda cans, plastic bottles, standing water puddles, cigarette ends and newspapers. Do not forget weeds. If the shanty has been there a while, vegetation will creep in.
Hope those ideas give you a bit of inspiration.
Snitchy sends.
Edit: Forgot to add pallets to the list.
-
What snitchy said + tires, barrels, plastic crates from fruit/vegetables or bottles but most of all, if it's a blacksmith : lots of scrap metal. can't work metal if you don't have the stuff at hand.

Kibera
-
I thought my house was messy lol lol
Thanks for the tips guys. Just trying to keep it generic enough as well without being too sci Fi. :)
I cannot show many more pictures as the thing is mostly painted. I'll take some pictures if I end up making tulle terrain additions.
Cheers
Matt.

Clutter?
I once read of a model railway trick where the modeller used the small paper packaging from the inside of padded envelopes to recreate clutter and in particular paper rubbish.
You may want to try this.
Tony

Photography, montaged, and submitted! Whoo! My first build something.
I am happy with my results, but some of you have pulled a stunning effort! I am humbled.
Cheers
Matt

Well done; look forward to seeing it in a week or two with the rest.
-
Well done, also looking forward to your completed build.
-
:o :o
I have been lapse in responding to this, Bertie.
Many apologies.
::)
This is looking absolutely great so far and I am really looking forward to the additons to come.
8) 8)
I can see why you want it as generic as possible.
Maybe some general app period clutter with some smaller period/genre specific piles that can be added or removed as wanted.
;)
-
Thanks Pablo.
Yeah that didn't really happen... And playability was huge in my mind since a figure only just squeezes in between the buildings. So it's a tidy shanty town that's a bit sci Fi. Not sure it will pass as OW or fantasy. :/
-
Last piccy for completion

Thanks for all who voted for me! :D
