I snuck in to this party at the last moment.
I am building a whatcanIcallit. In danish it is a "kulmile". Those "ovens" you build to produce charcoal.
-
We have those over hare and looking forward to seeing what they look like over there :)
cheers
James

Here is the current state of affairs.

The mounds started life as birds nests from the local petshop. But now they will produce charcoal to my Viking blacksmith so he can make more swords and axes for the lads to plunder the British isles with.
I was originally goint to put them on one base but I cut it to small and it ended up just looking like two boobs, so I caved in and made two seperate ones. I do not know if this disqualifies me..
-
Just one base for the comp but no reason why you can't finish the other somewhere else :)
cheers

Nice idea and will be great piece to set the mood on gaming table. I think I need to make one for myself too :)
-
Very cool. Not a topic that usually makes it onto the table.
Snitchy sends.
-
That's a Great start.
-
So can anyone tell me what this is called I english?
-
A charcoal Kiln...looking good
-
If my memory serves me right, the colliers were believed to possess magical skills and knowlegde in the medieval times.... I guess it was due to their "mysterious" work in the forests and their appearance was somewhat dirty and all that.
Yes, I need to make one for myself for sure.
-
I am still working on this and have started painting. But I fear that it is already so advanced that I should not post any more wip shots.
-
If you've started painting, you must be the most advanced of the contest.
I agree with you that there is a point that you should just stop posting and wait until the contest starts.
Good luck.
Tony
PS.
There are images of charcoal burners at the Bewdley Museum in Bewdley and they look just like the ones you have modelled.
-
Nice.
For a moment there I thought it was a post-apoc project with someone building a "kålmila" on top of an building untill I realise it was just a radiator. lol
-
Hehe. The radiator next to my painting desk is handy for speeding up dryingtimes.
-
So can anyone tell me what this is called I english?
In English it is usually known as a charcoal clamp, although probably only by industrial archaeologists these days.
-
Well I have actually gone and finished my entry.
But when seeing what everyone else is producing I feel almost ashamed of mine...
-
Congratulations.
Are you the first to finish?
Tony
-
He hasn't emailed the photo - so not yet. ;)
-
In fact I haven't even taken a photo yet. It will have to wait until the weekend. Where I can take one in daylight.

Very clever idea for a build Dr. Z.
Tough living conditions though, if you won't have any daylight until the weekend!
-
It sometimes feels like that..
I meant daylight where I do not have to go to that job thingy.
-
:D
-
How did you finish this piece? In particular the open face - gravel or crushed glass?
-
I build these two actually. They are made from birdsnests I bought for next to noting in a petshop. One I cut out a section glued some card filler in and then glued some grated kork on to look like the finished coal. The other one I left unopened.

Perfect for those Dark Age games that you have been playing, sir.
Very effective.

Agreed, and useful for fantasy too.

Thanks. Saved away for later.

So simple, but very effective. I really like these :)
