Title: Old Traveller Art
Post by: The_Beast on 16 February 2015, 02:26:29 PM
Got called on an off-the-cuff statement that I had some original Traveller artwork. Made me think folks here might like a peek.

Marc Miller was obviously clearing out old files, and flogged much art on eBay. I've several others waiting framing, much preliminary though.

While he never said so, I'm pretty sure these were originally used in Traveller 9: Fighting Ships, and then repeated oft elsewhere.

Anyone else get some art? I know I was outbid often enough.  :'(

That is amazing! I love the old Traveller art. In fact I love most of the older science fiction game art. There's something more exciting about line art that is missing with the painted pieces and computer generated stuff you find in modern supplements.

That brings back memories!  The first Scifi RPG I ever played!  After all these years I still have fond memories of those gaming sessions.

Guilty confession: I never got far in the role-playing, but loved reading the 'fluff' and the ships, I had to have at least some of the art. Actually, until word got around, they went for less than I feared, but competition did happen eventually.

Still, the box-o-stuff waiting proper mounting is fairly large. Framing when, you're totally NOT DIY, is cost-daunting.

Ad Astra has gotten Miller's signoff on doing some more of the ships in miniature. I'm not a huge fan of Ad Astra, and am disappointed with the ones I did get in earlier batches, but there's going to be a Plankwell! *whimper*

Thanks for enjoying the moment! I originally thought I might get enough to do showings at small game cons, but haven't had the energy, nor positive feed back for putting them up at the store, much less than going 'on the road.'

Wow! I'm jealous, I've had the opportunity in the past to buy some original artwork but was always too poor.  ;D

I shared a room at Gencon way back in the day in Milwaukee with the late Bryan Gibson.  He sold me the drawing he did of the original Bridgeport Swift Songbird.

Great Traveller 2300 art.

Truly sad when I heard of his passing last year.

I'll need to keep a look out for the Ad Astra stuff. I have their Scout and Freetrader, and while they're not great, they are at least Traveller ships. One of these days, I may even get around to painting them ;D

I've ordered a Scout and Freetrader (starting to see a pattern here) from d20 Entertainment (http://d20entertainment.com/spinward-traveller/limited-edition-reason-ships/). I got the unpainted versions, as they're half the price of the painted ones, but it looks like most of the unpainted stuff has been sold. If my sums are correct, they're about 1:300 (I think they claim 1:250, which is close enough), so could, in theory, be used for gaming...

Not sure when they'll arrive, and there will be a large customs bill, but, hey - Traveller ships

I still have the Deluxe Traveller box set from however many years ago it was now. Nice to see the originals of some of the artwork

Those look great!

Thanks for sharing.

I hope Ad Astra eventually produce a System Defense Boat, and Gazelle class Close Escort, to go with their Scout and Beowulf.  Would love to see a few other vessels in the same, larger scale to go with them too, e.g. other trading vessels, etc.

Any chance you could take a pic to share and post here? PLEASE?

Okay, that was a bit whinny...  lol

Truly, though I thought they HAD done one at one point. As I've said elsewhere, I've gone all fuzzy on the subject.

Did you see the conversion (mostly snip, snip) of the Aerotech Vengeance carrier I did? Tiny in comparison, but would look okay against some of the larger ships, though pinheads would be appropriate with the battleships.  ;)

I will try to post it at some point but my internet "foo" is very, very weak.

One other interesting thing from that weekend with Mr. Gibson is that he showed up in the room one night with a baseball cap reading "CAT Fusion Power".....right out of his 2300 art.

Since then, whenever I have played Traveller, in whatever form, I always wear the hat.

I was thinking about getting a piece of original art for some time now. This is something I'd like to have on my wall too. Great classic sci-fi!  Congrats!
