Title: Mister Rab in spaaaaaaace! (Phagons 11/03)
Post by: Mister Rab on 17 February 2015, 05:01:35 PM
Over the last few months I've picked up a few of the Spacelords figures that Doug has been rereleasing. Now, finally, my painting enthusiasm has returned and I've got the first of them done. The intention is to use them as a sort of Rogue Trader and his crew for early edition 40K skirmish gaming.

First up, a redshirt wearing orange:

Still to come are another half a dozen troopers, a squad of phagon beastmen, a cyborg, a lone eldar, and the trader himself. They're all prepped and undercoated, so I should be able to plough through them fairly quickly (as in, this year!). I hope...

Thanks chaps! That cyborg I mentioned should have his wiring sorted by the end of tomorrow evening.

And here he is! Meet Gregor, your psychotic neighbourhood cyborg:

Before the incident with the fungus harvester, Gregor had been regularly mocked and knocked around because of his diminutive stature. Since they rebuilt him (they had the technology!), very few dare to mess with the eight foot of servo-enhanced plasteel pit fighter and bodyguard he has become - the only thing that is short about him now is his temper...

As a bonus, have a blurry scale shot with depth of field problems  ::)

Where is the cyborg model from?

Great start to your RT crew. I really like the looks of some of those Spacelords models. Tempting to get some... but they'd just gather dust.

Ray - he's from the now defunct Alpha Forge range for Star Mogul. I'm not sure whether the molds where taken on by anyone else, or if they fell into the post-Mega-Minis black hole  ???

stone-cold-lead - do it! I'd dearly love to see what you did with them, but perhaps wait until I've got a few more done so I don't get discouraged  lol

scurv - ten in an afternoon  :o ? You mad, bro?! I'm such a slow painter that for me this rate of one per two evenings is getting dangerously close to relativistic speeds  ;)

You could knock off 10 in an afternoon. I have.
I would get sore.

 ;D

I like that cyborg!

If I start running up against my need-these-figures-for-a-game deadline (6th March) for the first eight, you might notice that colour scheme appear, Scurv  :D

Luthor Pavonis caught sight of himself in the mirror and raised an appreciative eyebrow; all his items of clothing clashed with at least one other piece - perfect! He'd explained it to Gregor one evening while the brute was having one of his regular memory wipes. Some men of wealth and power took great care to dress exquisitely; what did that say but they had money and lots of people have money. Some wore discrete clothing; this said they were confident that everyone knew who they were without having to catch your eye. Luthor's approach was different; dress like a colourblind pimp to send out the message that no-one dared to tell you how stupid you looked.

Besides, he had whispered as Gregor went into the deepest part of the reboot, Luthor loved to feel fabulous!

I like this sculpt, it was fun to paint and I got most of it done while encouraging my two lads (seven and almost five) further along the way of the geek with a spot of their own figure painting. All in all, a very pleasant day and a third figure complete.

Here's the boss doing a twirl:

And the rest of the boys I need to get done by the 6th:

Spurred on by Scurv, I'm pretty confident I'll make it  8)

Great paint jobs, really like the old school hex bases too!

Hex bases are the future, so it seemed appropriate  :D

Now, on with the recruitment...

Dean inhaled deeply and appreciatively, rolling the smoke around his mouth before exhaling gently and regarding the glowing tip of his cigar as if it contained all the answers to all the questions in the universe...

The crash of falling masonry and his brother Nico yelling for him to get up and start blasting snapped him out of his reverie and back to his day job - shooting the people Luthor told him to shoot. Life could be worse, eh?

And with the rest of the gang:

I'm fairly pleased with how this little project is coming along and I've got a snazzy new robot from Oathsworn as some more substantial... bargaining power.

Not my paintjob, but this is the brute. I'll probably go with more yellow to tie in with the cyborg

Nice bunch - you just can't beat unfeasibly large guns and a boss in shoulder pads and striped trousers - keep up the good work.

Thanks, Scurv - more bonus points for me for this update, then  :D

Ahead of tonight's first ever game of Necromunda, I've got my possibly-too-few-in-number Guilder gang finished and based - and even with one spare ganger ready to swell numbers if needed. Handily they also form the start of my Rogue Trader and retinue for some retro RT/40K action in the future. Introducing the final three...

Finish the job, don't get killed, get paid, don't drink or gamble it away. That was Tyler Watson's mantra and he stuck to it fervently. See, he'd been above the Line once, and that had been enough. Now every waking moment went towards The Plan - buying the bio-signs and passes to sneak across and set up in a new life where the air was barely 'cycled, no-one was trying to blow your head off, and the food wasn't just nutri-sticks. Finish the job, don't get killed, get paid, don't drink or gamble it away.

Bobby Fettle? Story went he'd been a bounty hunter but had lost his clients 'cos of a rat. He'd been shipping some fella back from the Outlands in cryo but a rat had chewed the cable and the mark had defrosted. In the case. No food, no water. He was dead and rotting by the time they got back to the hive. That was the reason for the 'tache as well - always perfumed to mask the imagined smell of putrefying corpse...

(https://images-blogger-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?url=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F-YxQqRSwcDzU%2FVPozC9-vZlI%2FAAAAAAAAClA%2FUmzbxGWupok%2Fs1600%2FBobby%252BFettle.jpg&container=blogger&gadget=a&rewriteMime=image%2F*)

Hayden Blue, the fungus boy. He'd try anything to get a buzz; that hair colour was a case in point - laced with some critter's venom, slowly being absorbed through his hair and scalp. Mental!

(https://images-blogger-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?url=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-opMaY_GaRRQ%2FVPoz6b2IwkI%2FAAAAAAAAClI%2FviUBP1J_VCc%2Fs1600%2FHayden%252BBlue%252B-%252B1.jpg&container=blogger&gadget=a&rewriteMime=image%2F*)

So, that's the lot. Time for a family photo:

(https://images-blogger-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?url=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F-2465fBrtBkA%2FVPo0LblFo8I%2FAAAAAAAAClQ%2FWDPWTSQDCFw%2Fs1600%2FLuthor%27s%252BPeacock%252BCo.jpg&container=blogger&gadget=a&rewriteMime=image%2F*)

I wonder if any of them will survive their first encounter? Wish me luck!

lol No, with a couple of exceptions, my conversion skills normally only extend to painting it a different colour than it is on the website  lol

After a top-notch evening of dice rolling with Whiskey Priest's scavvies (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=76157.msg931457#msg931457) among others, the gang are now properly blooded and didn't get wiped out! We used the original Necromunda rulebooks (and even some original boxed-set terrain for old-school cool points) and I liked the system. It was just a straight-forward "last gang standing" game, but I got a bit of a feel for how a more narrative scenario would run and I'm looking forward to having a go at one next time.

More game photos and blether on my blog (http://geeklydigest.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/necr-ogre-munda.html)

In game terms, the gang picked up a few advances but not much loot. I also realised the flaws inherent in having a tiny gang so sold my lascannon in the post-game and have hired another ganger and three meatshields ("juves" in Necro parlance) to bulk things out a bit. The juves are in the post from Forlorn Hope Games and are from the Future Skirmish line.

I'll continue to post here as more get painted.

Keeping the ball rolling, I got stuck into a squad of Phagon beastmen tonight. One finished and four under construction.

Thanks  :D

I think I've done a better job with the beasts as well; something about our familiarity with humans and the things we wear means that any slight deviation makes the whole seem less accomplished. Well, that's my theory anyway!

More beast painting tonight, I hope...

Phagons are looking great! I like the green jacket on the finished one particularly.

I do like your basing - what are you using for the little orange additions? They really set the whole thing alight!

Thanks, axiom, I was rather chuffed with the green armour; it's the first time I've gone for anything approaching edge highlighting and I rather like the effect. I shall have to practise it over the next few figures.

The orange bits are foam scatter, of the sort you get for tree foliage. I picked a bag of it up for a quid or two from a toy and model shop in Ely, Cambridgeshire Bedford a couple of years ago and rediscovered in a recent tidy up. I think they were meant to be Autumn foliage but it was a bit... alien looking for me to get to look realistic. Fortunately, now I want alien looking!

EDIT - shop changed for accuracy! The bag still had the label on. Unbranded but only £1.50 for a 4x6x1" bag.

lol I have a load of phagons painted like that!
once again excellent work.

Yeah, it was only when I searched for pictures of them to pick a gun colour that I saw green is almost compulsory for their armour  :?  lol I had picked it to go with Luthor's cloak, keeping him as my colour link for all the bits and pieces that will make up the retinue.

Yeah - I'm liking them as well. I think the Spacelords Facebook page (see link below) needs some photos like this so how about it? And you, Scurv if you've got some.

I need constant encouragement to get more Spacelords out (as I've said before, I'm a sensitive bloom) and seeing pics of people's work here and on the FB page is just the support I need.
