Title: Aimlessnessness and a 'Saga' house.
Post by: Zaheer on 20 February 2015, 07:09:53 PM
The first step is to admit that you have a problem...

A generic 'dark age' house I'm working on, this picture doesn't show half the detail and it's such a usual design that it's hard to get that excited about. I'm looking to make copies with flat-faced moulds resulting in a 'kit' so I'm considering how best to do the roof, I'm considering simply using mdf or some other sheeting with teddy bear fur on top. Sculpting the thatch is another option I suppose but would require changing the way the roof overhangs the gables. Thoughts very much appreciated.

Looks great to me, very authentic...but I'm hardly an expert on the matter.
A village of houses of this quality would look amazing.

I would sculpt it. Best way would be 3 pieces - each side and a ridge capping piece.

Maybe have 2-3 designs so you can mix and match when you create a village. Will allow you to slowly expand the range.

Watching with interest.

Try using fur material with the cap strip disguised by blending the fur of the cap strip into the fur of the roof pieces using a toothbrush and water/glue solution.  I can identify with your photo that documents the need for the first step of admitting one has a problem.  Good Luck.

Some progress, I'm much happier with the A-frame, and honestly, I feel the roof will look better with teddy bear on top of the sulpted thatch, but that's nor for everyone. The photography doesn't show half the detail but oh-well...

I think the sculpted roof looks great - much better than Teddy Bear Fur.....

Well they look jolly good, especially the A-frame version.

Some unrelated bits and pieces,

These are some shots of one of a few old west buildings that I'm revisiting. They're a nightmare to photograph as they have to be temporarily held together with tape, but I'm glad I did as I've since re-worked the plank texture since seeing these shots. Hard to think of what else can be done to add interest to these!

Some odds and ends for my Post-Apoc thread...
