Having completed my Teutonic Knights I needed someone to take them on.....

The mounted Druzhina, militia and archers are from Gripping Beast and the mounted Mongols are from Fireforge.
I don't know how long these will take to finish but I will post regular updates.
On a side note I would just like to say how awesome Gripping Beast are to deal with. As part of the Druzhina units I bought the Alexander Nevsky set. Unlike other sets he comes in a pack of three minis rather than 4. I asked if I could get a single Druzhina to make an even number which they did with no problems. They also supplied the mix of horses I wanted and the shields I wanted. Real pleasure to deal with.

Just taking my seat. Look forward how you paint them up.
-
This should be good. Pass the pork scratchings and the beer! ;D
-
Looks like a nice balanced force.
I would have expected you to bring mead Argonor...
-
Nice figs. I like the mongols in particular; their poses are excellent. if they turn out even half as good as their Teutonic opponents, they'll look amazing once painted
-
I'm looking forward to watching the progression of this retinue.
-
Having just looked through your excellent Teutonic Knights thread I am really looking forward to seeing your progress on their opponents.
-
Just started painting my Druzhina cavalry and have decided that this will probably be slow going........
First up is my "Prince" and his standard bearer with a home-made flag.

Wow, lovely! :o
That force will look amazing when finished!
-
Gorgeous :-*
-
Amazing papa!!! :o
Can I propose something regarding Russian titles?
Instead of prince, you can call him boyar (high ranked Russian noble) or bogatyr (legendary Russian hero). Can help you choosing proper name for him.
-
Very, very nice! :)
And the models look like they could also be pressed into service as alternative Rohan Royal Guards o_o
-
I love the paint job on the horse on the right, can't wait to see you finish the rest of them!
-
What a stunning start!
:-* :-*
-
Ughhh....lost for words
Please tell me the flag is printed
-
Blimey, these are stunning!
-
How did you do the snow?
-
Very, very nice start !
your medieval russians looks really promising.
-
Thank you all for the comments. I'm enjoying doing these but they are time consuming!
Can help you choosing proper name for him.
You certainly can! The mini is supposed to be Alexander Nevsky but a suitable Russian name for the Prince would be ideal.
Please tell me the flag is printed
Yes, it's printed.... lol
How did you do the snow?
I use "Deluxe Scenics" Scenic snow kit ( at the bottom of this page)
https://www.deluxematerials.co.uk/gb/28-scenic-products
Hope that helps.
I'm busy at work at the moment but have some time off coming up to really get stuck into these.

Lovely work :-* :-* :-*
I've git a tiny gripe about the size of the Mongol horses though, far too big :-[
I'm sure they'll look great when you've painted them though :)
cheers

-
Well painted. :D
I'm surprised you find it takes a long time to paint these with all that metal going. o_o
Are the shield transfers home made as well?
-
Gorgeous.
:-*

just stunning

Absolutely beautiful!

After a major break from painting my Russians ( Norse Gods and Vikings got in the way....) I've finally painted some more mounted Druzhina. Hope you like them.

I think they've come out rather lovely :-* :-* :-*
I take it that they're shield transfers? I ask as I used to paint for GB and they are one's that I haven't seen before......
I do have one very minor criticism concerning the basing if you don't mind? I'll wait to see what you have to say before proceeding- it is a minor constructive criticism :)
Darrell.

Thanks gents. I've quite enjoyed getting back into these.

Yes, they are LBM transfers from the GB site. A little fiddly but really nice.
I never mind comments and would be interested to hear what you have got to say about the bases.......

Yeah, they are very nice. Set the unit off.

Well, what I was going to say (and it is all a matter of personal taste) is that plaster looks more realistic if done in the correct manner than the fake snow. There's a great article about it in Kevin Dallimore's second book if you have it?
I don't know if you conside rit worth trying on some bases without any painted mini's on?
Darrell.

Thanks Darrell. I've seen and tried lots of ways of doing snow. It's quite difficult to see with the camera I'm using, but the snow I use has a nice "sparkly" ice effect, which looks quite striking in the flesh. I will look out for the article that you mentioned as I'm always open to new techniques.

Really well done.
I never appreciated how much metal colour goes into these. Looks brilliant. What was the cloth made from in reality?

Glad you took it in the manner it was meant to be..... I always feel a little apprehensive about making suggestions to others over the net as things can get lost in translation very easily.

Thank you. I used some artistic licence with the colours but here is some reference material I used:

This horse shows how the "plates" were fastened together:

and some body armour:

Darrell.
-
Once again, very good painting here !
I love the way you've done the clothes... :-*
-
I love the tones , they are some of the nicest painted historical figures that I have ever seen.
-
Truly spectacular minis on this thread. You are very, very talented.
-
very nice indeed
-
Thank you for the comments. I just received my Fireforge heavy Mongol cavalry, which will give me some incentive to finish my horse archers.

Well, it's been quite a while since I added to this thread. I found some minis I had base coated and got side-tracked and forgot. I thought I'd add some paint to them.
They are to be used as Druzhina on foot and the minis are from Gripping Beast and Drabant.

Gorgeous figures!
-
:o The snow actually looks like it's melting on the edges, fantastic.
-
Fab,love the snow effect especially and the shields. :)
-
gorgeous :-* :-* :-*
-
Finally got around to finishing my horse archers. They are Fireforge Mongols on Gripping Beast Arab horses ( Their original horses are being used elsewhere....). I'm a bit peeved that the varnish has gone a bit patchy with white residue here and there. It's difficult to see with the naked eye but the camera doesn't lie!!!

That's my Russians pretty much done, although I might get some plastic Fireforge Russians when they are released.

Brilliant painting...lovely and dynamic positioning... :-*
Cheers,

-
stunning :-* :-*
-
They look great!
-
these are looking really good
-
Gorgeous work! I've never ever been tempted to do medieval Russians... up to now that is ;)
-
Fantastic work, the whole army looks really good. You've struck a nice balance of making the minis colourful but not garish.
The horse archers on the GB Arab horses really work. One thing that I didn't care for in the FF Mongols was that the horses looked too big to be steppe ponies. To me these are much nearer the mark in terms of scale. The dynamic poses of the archers also work very well.
-
Beautifully painted models. I love the patterns on the shields and the spots of rich colour. I need to find me some of those men on foot.
-
Thank you for the comments.
When I've got time I'll post some pics of the complete army.

Lovely stuff. :-*
Regards the white spots with the varnish. Give them a coat of gloss varnish then re do with matt varnish and the misting should disappear :)

I need to remember that one... for if I decide to varnish... :)

Have come late to this thread but just have to say how AWESOME these figures look :-* :-* :-* - absolutely beautiful work - you have improved on the illustrations you used for reference and the basing sets them off a treat...I look forward to seeing a shot of them all together
