Corps of Guides..........
again...and as well the hold Foundry ones the turban and are wrongly designed...
the units was composed of Punjabi Muslims and, mainly in the case of Cavalry, of a minority of Sikhs ecc...the most iconic image being the Muslim sepoys in Kullah...
the figure are an attempt of a way between..Sikh turban (the broad one)  with  Muslim kullah..which is a mistake present also in many contemporary naives illustrations..also the Muslim Sepoy should sport moustaches or, in any case, not that huge, typical Sikh beard...
hope  the designer will make more research as concern the Cavalry branche of this essential unit...dismounted cavalrymen would be very useful..(the defense of Cavagnari's Residence)

Italwars, I agree to an extent but I'm now going to post a picture to counter you ;)

Sat on the floor in the centre is a Guides soldier who very clearly has the wide Sikh style turban with a kullah coming up from it.

Stood above him are two Muslim Guides with beards every bit as splendid as the Sikhs in the photo.

Which brings us to the fact that in that photo there are about 4 Sikh soldiers and I believe at least two different Muslim regions represented. Certainly not all Punjabi Muslims as you said. From the books I own, the Corps of Guides was noteworthy for the fact that it was made up from several of the "martial races" to quote the time.

Now all that said, I do hope this is only the first pack and we will see more figures to make up this mixed unit.

Who knows.... maybe the next pack of Guides will have less facial hair  :)

Guys and Gals,

If you do buy any of the Artizan packs that have no images on the Ns site, please do send me the pics and I'll add them to the first post on the thread.

Italwars, why would you presume Mike doesn't know what he's designing?

This is only one of a series of Guide packs as well.

He's done a damn good job with every other range he's designed, that's for sure.

This is only one of a series of Guide packs as well.

At the risk of sounding the sycophant, hat's what I was pointing that out in my last post.

Or, to put it another way, if I were employing a sculptor to produce a range of miniatures, Mike Owen would be one of the guys at the top of my list. This is why I'm so excited about this range- enough to sell 90% of my foundry Perry sculpts to gobble up more Artizan NWF!

BTW, Nick, a couple of requests, when you have time please finish taking the pics for the rest of the range. And (Oxford grammar  ;) ) please let us know if we will see some NCO's for this range. After all, they have featured very well in Mike's WWII ranges that have been so successful in the past.

Not to mention, as stated on the site, four of multiple head variants.

Hi, Thought I better on here. I spent ages trying to figure out how to do the guide infantry as I am sure half the customers would want 'Guides' and the other half would want the specific religious and regional variants. So what I eventually decided on were six packs of infantry, 2 Muslim, 2 Sikh, and 2 that can be used to represent other types like the Afridi. As I had already done some Sikhs I decided to do these first. The Muslim variants and the Sikh ones will be out in the next couple of weeks. I should also mention that I am currently working on British NCO characters for those who asked about them.
Regards.
Mike

6 different packs for one 'unit', even Italwars can't moan about that surely?  ;)

Great news on the NCO's, thanks Mike!

Thanks Mike. I know that you put a lot of effort into your work so i'm a very happy man to hear what you have to say. I'm really looking forward to getting some NCO's as they round off the units and add that extra bit of character that 'skirmish'/single based games really need.

Thanks for filling us in.

Darrell.

NCO's!!! Brilliant news Mike.  :D

A certain drummer from the Gordons would make my day.  ;)

The Guides sound ideal too, makes it easier to taylor the unit on the table. I've just started my first colour test for the British infantry, they really are lovely figures to put a brush to.

The figures are all with our Mr Dallimore to get photographed. He's going to blame the deadline for the next Osprey Games project for taking up all his time.... yeah right.

Italwars, why would you presume Mike doesn't know what he's designing?

This is only one of a series of Guide packs as well.

maybe i most apologize for the way i expressed my thoughts....in fact , at least for me, this first pack don't remind the iconic aspect of this special frontier corps...the subsequent message form the designer is, on the other hand, very interesting..the project of doing also variations of cats/religion among headgera in the same unit is, from a wargame point of view, an unexpected but great luxury...as one forum kindly explain trough a posted pict (i'm not able to do the same with my sources) there is evidence of that headgear among giudes.but a scant one and not really the same..my thought on the matter was dictated by the fact that, in that kind of forum we can talk about every futile detail about minis and, above all, that the so called Foundry Guides ..very similar to those of the Artizan pict..are not a set with great appeal to deserve the name of Guides..or, at least, to diferentiate with others..
said that, also in my case, following a production of Guides with Muslim type high, tightned turban and kullah ..icludin "Personalities" from this manufacture i 'll be happy to give away my WF "guides" (painted as something else) and buy them

Chaps,

I'd just like to ask the following:

If anyone has any pics of packs not illustrated on the North Star site or the first post in this thread for the NWF could you please send the pics to me and I'll post them up so we can all see what it is we're buying if that way inclined?

My e-mail:

darrell.hindley@googlemail.com

Cheers,
Darrell.
