Title: Comm/ops Centre scenery - Finished
Post by: JoeRugby on March 08, 2015, 11:35:44 PM
Comm/ops Centre scenery

I've been slowly working on this bit of scenery since late August last year I'm starting back on it now after my usual end of year hobby hiatus.
Here's all my progress up to this point. Warning its a big post.

The plan
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg1-12.jpg)
it's going to be an L box on stilts with a radio/satellite tower on the roof so it's an unusual shape that can be small(ish) but is still interesting.
The roof will be removable so you can play inside.

As I want to be able to use this in Deadzone I need to keep the 3" cubes in mind. So the 1st floor will be on 3"stilts, the room will then be 3" to the roof and the tower will be mother 3"

Initial shapes cut and assembly started
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/Geek/imagejpg1-4.jpg)

Test fitting the 1st floor to the stilts
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/Geek/imagejpg2-3.jpg)

Given the position of the large window and the actual ops room (the door and most of the wall I want to have as glass aka clear plasticard) I've moved the toilet/roof access cube to the opposite side of the building.

Stairs
I decided to go with stairs that you can place a model on rather than realistic ones. ( some of the steps work out as being about 2 foot apart at 28/30mm scale)
Here's the frame for the stairs I was initially going to have the stairs as just card but I decided to go for single tread embossed plasticard to add a bit more detail.

Stairs attached to the 1st floor
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/Geek/imagejpg3-5.jpg)

Now comes the slow and painful bit of detailing the interior.

For the basic floor I went for a panel look in the end. (I was going to get some sulaco floor grating from fenris but it just cost too much)

I cut out 2 of the panels for me to get some wires/pipes added underneath for more depth. (And make the plain floor tiles less boring)

Also I cut out the steps from some embossed plasticard, here's the step panels dry fitted.

Close up
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg1-20.jpg)

the doors for "roof access" and the "toilet" also start to take shape.

Then I Painted the toilet/roof access wall

I'm happy with how it looks, the area before the actual ops room will be in this light grey colour. With the ops room being a dark grey.

I've also added detail to the emergency generator on the ground floor, and plastered the balsa stilts.( I would have left them plain but when I tested one the wood grain came through too much to count as steel girders)

Close up on the access hatch, just card embossed with a bic pen and plasticard handles.

Close up of the on off switch.

The square gap over the hatch will have one of those AK interactive headlights acting as a warning light/ generator is on or off light.

Other details

The gaps will be vents which I'll make and add after I've painted the rest of the generator (like the wire fences, and steps).

Base colours on the ground floor

I wanted the emergency generator to look like one of those CAT ones, still lots of painting and washing to do.

Slight problem, the gap between the generator and the fence is only just big enough for a 25mm base as I'm going to be using a lot of lipped bases in AVP and on minis I want to look extra pretty I'm going to have to extend the fenced area to the pillar by the stairs this should be easy it just means I have to drill 2 holes and add more fence posts.
(And the OCD reason is that there wouldn't be enough room for anyone to open the generator hatches to do maintenance :*) )

Mostly just things getting painted after this point so

WIP picture montage starts..........
Now
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg1-22.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg1-22.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg3-12.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg3-12.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg2-15.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg2-15.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg3-14.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg3-14.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg2-20.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg2-20.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg2-21.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg2-21.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg1-31.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg1-31.jpg.html)
Glass wall and dood to the opps room
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/imagejpg5-9.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/imagejpg5-9.jpg.html)

And that brings us to the current state of play

For the ground floor I need to add a light (red ak interactive lense) to the generator, and add the fence door and the ground floor is done.

I need to now start work on the opps room, And get window frames in place for my plastikard windows.

Thanks for looking

Thanks for the kind words

Progress has been made (only a tiny bit but still)

Windows and frames are in.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_6.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_6.jpg.html)

More interior detail added
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_7.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_7.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/c61f4361-7602-4f0b-be73-63e53185caa9.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/c61f4361-7602-4f0b-be73-63e53185caa9.jpg.html)

New back wall painted, desk added and screens painted.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_4.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_4.jpg.html)

Next I need to make switches (lots of switches), finish adding the screens to the monitors (I might add a coat of gloss varnish over the screen pictures), make some things that look like shutter housings for the windows and Buy 2 keyboard minis (anyone know where I can get these aside from the office set from thormillion?)

I might glue the back wall in now so I can get started on the outside but it will make adding the keyboards a pain later.

I've got the pad to myself today so I'm hopping to get a lot of hoppy stuff done (in between the rugby of course)

Thanks for looking.

What a build!  :o

Awesome dedicated work with all the details, will be great to see this finished.

Then the big question, what's coming next after this? :)

Magnificent piece.
The details really lift it to another level.
I too I'm anxious to see the finished product.

 Thanks both :)

The next piece will either be:

A memorial garden, so a walled/ gated rectangle with a statue in the middle and 2 trees either side, some of those model train flower beds and a lot of static grass. (the girlfriend wants me to make something pretty and this will allow me to make some trees)

Or I'll be making a Bank/post office/administratum ruin. ( a fancy fronted, ruined corner facade basically)

Here's the test paper and card version
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_5.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_5.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_3.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_3.jpg.html)

But....

There's still a ton to do on this one yet. :)

Very nice work. I like your balance between angle, depth and rise of steps. It's a hard balance to get looking right while still being useable, but I think you got it.

Thanks guys

Not a lot of hobby time over the last few weeks, most of my time has been spend doing up my house before I move in.

My experience with lack cat bases seems to have been the same as others, absolutely no communication since I placed my order so I've put in a dispute on PayPal to get my cash back. Such a shame. :'(

I lost patience waiting for the rest of the interior to be finished so I glued the back wall on and textured the exterior walls.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_9.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_9.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_5.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_5.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg3_3.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg3_3.jpg.html)

Just stippled poly filler and sealed it with watered down PVA to make it stronger.

Hoping to get the exterior painted this weekend.

Thanks for looking if anyone knows anywhere else that makes some affordable keyboard models please let me know.

Zinge Industries perhaps? I've got a few hand scanners, switches, nob, bobs and dooads from them and they are really neat and clean cast stuff.

Cheers both ill take a look when I get a chance.

I managed to get the exterior painted and weathered yesterday.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_10.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_10.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_6.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_6.jpg.html)
The bare wall at the front is going to have a C2 stencil on it (to add a bit of colour)

I also fixed the roof, so it's now less warped and sits flush with the walls
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg3_4.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg3_4.jpg.html)
That leaves me with the following to do before I'm finished

Ground floor
Buy AK interactive lenses to add warning light to generator.
Paint and add door to chain link fence

1st floor exterior
Print out C2 stencil and paint on

1st floor Interior
Add switches and door handles to interior
Order and add keyboards to Ops room
Paint and glue down Ainsty office chairs

Roof
Build "communications" tower - will be about 4-5" tall with a maintenance platform/sniper nest at 3" again in keeping with Deadzone.
Build Roof AC vents
Texture and paint

Better get back too it then :)

Thanks for looking

Not done anything hobbywise for a while until today.

Started off by making the comm tower frame.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_12.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_12.jpg.html)
Just Mounting board and plasticard and a lot of measuring.

Then the initial bit of paint went on.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg3_5.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg3_5.jpg.html)
Red and white like a contemporary telecom tower (adding a bit more colour to what is otherwise a predominantly grey piece) . I used a sponge and masking tape to get the lines but it's run a bit so I'll need to clean that up.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_7.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_7.jpg.html)
And here it is dry fitted with a Mars attacks marine for scale.

There will be a walkway (e.g snipers nest) between the two platforms which I will try to get done tonight.

Thanks for looking

P.s. I finally got my stuff from black cat bases it was shipped the last day of the PayPal dispute I'd put in place.

What a detailed building! That's fantastic, the lights, the switches, wiring, it all goes together so well, smashing work!

I saw some red and white towers in Japan, and you're right, much more exciting than mostly grey ;)

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks all. :)

With your motivation I managed at get a little bit more done yesterday.

Platform was made and the tower assembled.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_8.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_8.jpg.html)

I also glued it down at the same time I was adding my PVA sealer to the roof.

Still need to make and add, a ladder, railing around the platform and a fuse/manual control box to put on the platform as well.( so there's a reason for the platform being there)

Once I've done those bits I'll start work on a satellite dish and other antennae for the tower.

Here it is at the moment. Standing in at 12" tall
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_13.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_13.jpg.html)

So close yet so much fiddly stuff to still do :(

Thanks for looking

This is some seriously stunning work. Thank you also for the detailed WIP photos, really makes it easy to see how you constructed it. I think the final building looks the part and has nice weathering and in general a very good laypout to make for interesting gaming. The interior detail is equally impressive.

Did you consider to add a bit more rust and dust effects to make it look more gritty or is this a structure still in constant use? I understand the steps of the staircase are not in scale to place miniatures safely on them? I think that is a good design decision, but would wonder if there is a way to have them more in scale, but also provide for miniatures climbing them.

Thanks all

There is more weathering to come, I want to to look appropriate a few different genres.

With the stairs problem the only way I could think of was to made a tool it would provide the mini with the extra base space and allow you to have 5mm x5mm steps. This was too much work for me to be honest. :)

Because of a minis base depth the height isn't that bad. Maybe I could chop 5mm off the step length. Hmmm

A little bit more progress has been made.

The tower platform has been made and painted.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg1_14.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg1_14.jpg.html)

I made a handrail for the steps (was told to by health and safety) and painted on a stencil.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/image.jpg2_9.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/image.jpg2_9.jpg.html)

Here's what I need to still do to finish this off. (Prepared to be bored by my wall of text)

Roof
Satellite/coms array (all to do)
Maintenance/ control panel ( to be painted and glued)
Cables (not sure about this yet)
2 air conditioner/ vent units. (All to do)

1st floor
Keyboards (to be painted and fixed
Switches x2 (all to do)
Door handles x3 to be painted and added)
Keypad/ lock for entrance (to be painted and added)
Fire extinguishers x2 (to be added)
Add some spotlights to the C2 stencil
Paint a small wayland yutani logo below the C2
Paint employees only on the entrance
Add a fire exit sign on the interior.

Ground floor
Add an Ak interactive lense to the generator (need to buy when I've got a job again)
Maybe add some street debris.

All
More weathering so it looks more lived in, to fit in more game systems/ have a bit more narrative about it.

Thanks for looking and congratulations if you read through my boring list :)

"Not much of an update"? The guy makes serious strides in filling his terrain with more character then many people have in their hero miniatures, and he says "Not much of an update."

I can see making keyboards, but who takes the time to make computer mice? I love every bit of this build. The spilled soda can is fantastic. And the scaffolding is brilliant. I'm running out of positive words.

Great use of sprue and coffee stirers :D

There is so much character with the paint spills and equipment, it looks freshly abandoned.

Cheers
Matt

Here are the last few parts to get sprayed and added.

I'll try to get these painted tonight then it's just getting them glued on and doing the finishing touches with the brush. :)

My next update should be with pictures of the finished piece next week :)

Finished ....Finally done after many months on and off.

I think I hit the brief I set for myself, Usable for multiple systems (inquisimunda, infinity, AVP(when prodos send me mine :(), deadZone etc) and genres.

I have faffed a bit with the build to be honest, but that was partly down to using some new techniques and materials. It's not perfect but I have learned a lot making this which will hopefully make my next piece better.

Thank you all for looking and commenting it's really helped keep me motivated to finish this build.

Excellent.

Is there any chance of seeing it in place on a table any time soon?

Thanks guys

Excellent.

I'll have some pics up with my deadzone terrain soon

This is the proper first scratch build (aside from the scaffold) I've done since getting back into the hobby so I've only got my deadzone stuff to show it off with at the moment tho.
