Title: Quick, easy and cheap barbed wire sections
Post by: scrivs on March 15, 2015, 03:31:30 PM
We need quite a bit of barbed wire for our WWI games so I've set up a production line and churned out 6ft of the stuff so far.

Although it does look better as double sections, more of a battlefield obstacle than Farmer Giles field.

I've put the recipe and instructions together over  on Scrivsland  (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/barbed-wire-for-our-wwi-games.html)

Paul,
I saw just how knackering it is to mess about with wire ,and thought theres got to be a better way,(Also people kept saying you can't do wire in white metal).
So I came up with the above, a system which will.make roughly 20cm of wire in 3 minutes.or with a couple of cuts bent into odd shapes and curves.Theres a couple of resin bases to build deeper entanglements.and low level entanglements.
I saw on your blog your planning bigger entanglements.if It doesn't offend and if you think it'd be of use. I could post a couple of idea sketches for bigger entanglements that are done for the kind of wire you use, from an old sketch book.(at the risk of sounding like a know it all.Its just I spent alot of time and effort in getting the research and ballance right to build a product thats gathering dust so you might as well pick my brain's)

That is very kind of you I think it would be a great help. I am trying to get something that both looks reasonable and is game-able. So, no Farmer Giles fences but not going the whole hog and having something that looks great but would be unplayable.

Thanks

Paul

A simple method is to build a three bar fence one at the front of the base, and one to the rear, then fill the space between with either coil's,or random patches of bent wire.(dont worry about being neat as wire was thrown in any old how )
You can also do minefields buy making two fences on seperate base, one with two strands of wire and few small signs on it,and one with only one strand, and signs. The one strand fence goes towards the enemy.
You can do a knee high spider entanglement, between the fences or on its own.

Excellent stuff.... I'm going to have to order some more barbed wire... (who sells that now?)

The wire sections look great Paul, especially where the wire has been bombarded  :-* :-* :-*

I'm about to put in a large order for some GWM...... I'm not beyond the realms of being able to help myself now after the WorLard weekender!

;D Made a hash of explaining myself so here's a quick plan for wire.
Theres no need to wind the wire around the post just file three groves and one completely around the top.just weave the wire between the posts and glue into the groves the natural spring in the wire helps hold it in place.(saves wire too.)
The green and blue wire glue into the top grove, and onto the base at least 2cm infront of the next post.
The knee high wire uses just the green and blue wire.(best effect if you do at least two rows off set from the posts of the last line of posts)
I ment to write/say if you do a front and rear fence then the coiled wire/knee high.is better on a seperate base that way you can make varriations and weak spots.
The wire sets I've done were play tested at several clubs, and the feed back was the most useful size was 20cm by 6cm (it equaled the infantry movement through rough ground+fences etc)
I hope this makes more sense.

I have souped-up the barbed wire I did by adding some extra posts and stands of wire.

These should get some use in our game tomorrow.
