Title: Lucky Luke in 28mm (update 1/02)
Post by: white knight on 28 September 2008, 11:41:12 AM
My newest project: Lucky Luke in 28mm. Models are lead and made by Editions Atlas in France.

The Daltons. Not great paintjobs, but still a marginal improvement over the factory paintjobs.

These are great.  :)

Waht was the tallest Dalton called? Was it Averil? I seem to remember him being something of a chef in the comic I have.
Title: Re: Lucky Luke in 28mm - !!Daltons added!!
Post by: white knight on 11 October 2008, 11:23:48 AM
Averell, I think. He was the dumbest and the gentlest of the lot. :)
Joe (the little one) is the leader and the meanest.
I forgot the names for the other two as they always seemed secundary.

Post by: JollyBob on 11 October 2008, 11:28:40 AM
That's him. I believe that he and Rantanplan/Rin Tin Can became friends in Dalton City, even though he did feed the poor dog on soap for some reason.

That reason probably being stupidity. ;)

Joe William Jack and Averell, the smaller the meaner :)

I've looked at your site and the painting is really far more realistic by a mile than the originals.

It all looks a bit strange to me, are you going to do games with them?

looks like fun though  :D

Well, the original models are intended for display and I guess that will be the main role mine will serve as well. But I'm basing them all on 20mm round bases and there's no reason I shouldn't be able to play a skirmish game with them.

Just found this excellent free download of the Lucky Luke Town in paper. ;D

This should greatly aid in turning those building fronts in full buildings (or possibly pass on them and create my own from scratch).

Post by: white knight on 18 October 2008, 06:45:11 PM
Two more repaints of the metal 28mm Lucky Luke range by Editions Atlas:

The Undertaker (le croquemort):

Calamity Jane:

Excellent stuff as usual, the Undertaker is my favourite, I think.

So, did the real Calamity Jane look like a bloke as well? Was there a real one? What year is this, who's the president...?

Oh, she was real, all right.  Real name was Martha Jane Cannary, 1852-1903.  Worked as an Army Scout for several years.  Indian fighter.  Nurse.  Ox team driver.  Stagecoach driver, etc, etc.  Lived in the Deadwood area and was good friend of Bill Hickock.  Here's Calamity at age 43, c.1895.  Does look a bit like a bloke, doesn't she!

Oh, and Grover Cleveland was President of the US at the time.
Title: Re: Calamity Jane and the Undertaker (Lucky Luke in 28mm)
Post by: JollyBob on 18 October 2008, 09:09:47 PM
Blimey, she is a bit butch looking. I certainly wouldn't, although something tells me I might not have been given the luxury of choice with her...

(And sorry, the thing about the president is a line from a sketch show, The Fast Show, where a man dressed in a spacesuit would interrupt sketches and asked in a panicked voice what year it was etc. Probably only means anything to Brits.)

Well, she was a dancehall girl for a while and several times she worked for the Black Hills' leading madam but I don't know whether she was actually a 'soiled dove'.

Billy The Kid, the underage terror of the wild west:

Elliot Belt, fearsome bountyhunter and obvious ancestor of Lee Van Cleef:

With the original paintjobs before stripping:

Yes, I've started posting pictures on "collector" forums in threads about this collection.  >:D
I half expected outbursts of indignation about reducing their collector value by stripping them, but reactions have been very positive actually. :)

He was with the first issue, along with the sheriff's building.

You find him regularly on ebay, or you can go to journaux.fr and buy the first issue for 2.99€.

Photos it is necessary to do better!

If I understand you correctly, you would like better pictures? Will make new ones when I have a proper light setup (hopefully not too long from now).

It's been over a month since the last update it would seem.
Only a single model this time, but it's a wagon with driver and mules, so it should count. ;)

Still from the Editions Atlas range.

Title: Feathers and tar (Lucky Luke in 28mm)
Post by: white knight on 25 January 2009, 10:43:38 AM
In the Lucky Luke stories, whenever a gambler is caught cheating, he gets a choice: the rope or being covered in feathers and tar and escorted to the border of the town on a piece of rail, never to return. Needless to say, most stick with the second option. This little vignette by Editions Atlas shows one of these unfortunate hustlers. I left out the sheriff's star on the feathered man (although this was taken from an actual story), as to make it a more generic crook (besides,it was badly sculpted and only vaguely resembled a star). The vignette also comes with a bucket of tar (goudron) and a sack of feathers (plumes), which were also repainted...

Before being stripped and repainted, the figures looked like this:

Title: Feathers and tar + Mounted Lucky Luke
Post by: white knight on 25 January 2009, 12:48:53 PM
And another one done. Unlike the others, this mounted version of Lucky Luke is not an Editions Atlas mini, but came from the older (and more expensive) Pixi mini range on the same theme. I got this one cheap off ebay because half of the hat and part of an ear was broken off (and missing). Paint came off much easier than with the Atlas brand and after applying some green stuff to repair the hat and ear, it was ready to go.

That's why I'm buying some doubles on ebay to convert into more characters. ;)

Now working on the stagecoach, which I've converted from 2 horses to 4 (cannibalising a second copy of the stagecoach in the process).  :)
Title: Re: Stagecoach
Post by: white knight on 16 February 2009, 12:40:30 PM
"La diligence", with the famous driver Hank Bully. Another great model (with some work) from the Editions Atlas range. This one required a few modifications prior to repainting to bring it to the next level. Unlike the original comic and the Pixi version of the stagecoach, the Atlas model comes with only two horses (picture at the bottom of this post), which just won't do. So I cannibalised a second model (I kept the bits I didn't need to use in a future chariot conversion) to make room for two more horses. The extra horses themselves got a slight repositioning of the heads so that they wouldn't look identical and some greenstuff to the manes and tails.</p>
The coulour scheme for the coach ended up looking rather different from the Atlas paintjob. It's in fact a cross between the cover of the comic and an image of a real stagecoach I found online.

Great conversion of the horses.  I have to admit, however, I like the white details on the original stagecoach.  Those stagecoaches were often pretty garish, and yours look a little plain to be magestically sailing over the plains.   :(
Title: Re: Stagecoach
Post by: white knight on 16 February 2009, 04:31:18 PM
I did keep the white at first, but that really brought out how wonky those lines were on the sculpt and after getting some feedback on another forum, I painted it over in red. I knew when I did that that some people were going to prefer it with the white details, but you can't please them all. And in the original comic, it didn't have the white details either (other stagecoaches in other stories did, but the one this model is supposed to represent, didn't):

Finally got the next batch done. Not very excited  with the results. Move along people nothing to see here...

They're a mixture of Pixi and Atlas minis. Schoolkids and teacher. The teacher, kid with sailor suit and kid with donkey ears are Pixi. The kid with straw hat and the girl are Atlas. I'll probably replace the teacher with the Atlas one (still to be painted) and use this one as  a shopkeeper or something. The kids are tiny.

Yes, because in many cases the original paint is gooped on in a thicklayer. And since they're metal minis, it's no problem to strip them.

I've also got some conversions on the way. This one's nearly done and is based on an extra copy of Averell, turned into their uncle Marcel Dalton, the black sheep of the familie because he's an honest banker and not an outlaw.

Looks a bit rough in the pics, but much better when you look at the mini at it's actual scale.

Marcel Dalton:
Refuting the saying "the only good Dalton is a Dalton behind bars", Marcel Dalton is considered the black sheep of the family because he's the only honest Dalton. What's even worse, he's a (Swiss) banker. Brother to Ma Dalton, his existence came as a bit of a surprise to the Joe, Jack, William and Averell whenhe visited them in prison... This one is converted from a spare Averell Dalton mini from the Editions Atlas range.

Wow, the collection grows quickly : can't wait for the family pic !

I really like your clean paintjob and the blue highlights on the little guy aren't schokking, however, on a very few models (the bartender particularly) you seem to just overdo your blacklining a little bit too much : but it maybe the awful eye of the macro photograph though.

so keet it up,  please !

After all, pictures tend to blow up the figures to larger than life sizes and thin lines look much more pronounced.

Think I'll do a light wash on the little guy just to make it all blend together a bit more.
Title: indian, mexican and bandit added: Lucky Luke in 28mm
Post by: white knight on 20 September 2009, 01:53:39 PM
No this project is not dead (for those who were hoping it was, like say, anevilgiraffe  ), just been on the backburner.

Three more, all from the Atlas set: an indian, a mexican and a bandit. The indian is my favourite. Great mini. Mexican is okay, but a bit of a rough sculpt. Bandit is poor and uninspiring and I had to force myself to complete it. I've moved away a bit from the offcial colours on the indian and mexican, but I think it was worth it. Higlights aren't showing up well in the pics, damn...

I think they’re all nicely painted. It make a world of differences to see how they were and how they are now…
They’re much better now  ;)

A bit more progress. The camera has drowned out nearly all the highlights, but they are there. ;) HIs eyes don't look as weird in real life either.  :?

It's the (food?) store owner and some of his stock. All the models are from Editions Atlas, except for the stack of 5 small barrels which are Mega Minis. When I get around to building the actual shop (when all the figures are painted), I'll add some more goods from various sources.

well, there's all the ones in this thread (around 45 individual figs, 3 vehicles and some assorted items) and I have some more still to be painted (I'm guesstimating 20 or so, maybe a few more) + more decorative items + a load of doubles and plans to convert them in a variety of ways. Then there's the plan to add buildings with detailed interiors and furniture, a train (that I already have, but need to repaint)...  o_o

It's been a long time, but finally finished a couple more of these. Pictures are crap as usual, paintjobs just slightly less so.

Two more wagons for the caravan.

These are, as ever, brilliant.

I know you said above that you've got lots of doubles now, but are there still any figures you are missing, or have you got them all? No ultra-rare ones you just can't get hold of?

I've got all of those from the Atlas range (except some of the building fronts), and a good selection of the Pixi range (the ones I don't have for the most part cover the same characters or situations).
I would however like to get hold of the Pixi covered wagon which I haven't been able to find.

That is nice. Well, if I ever see one I'll let you know, but I don't think they ever made it over here.

I must say though, you've more staying power with this project than I would have. First time I couldn't get a character I really wanted and they all would have been out of the pram.  lol

Oh well, this one's not a character or anything and I just want him to add more variety to my wagon train. So if I never get him, it won't be a big deal. I've got all the named characters that were released, and converted a few more, so it's all good. :)

For those who thought (or hoped) this project was dead, surprise, it's not. I had these two conversions sitting on my desk undercoated for more than a year and decided to paint them up. Just a quick paintjob, nothing fancy (not that I could do fancy).

MIGHTY FINE LOOKIN' Little Folk, Pilgrim! I just wandered through the entire thread; you came up with some TERRIFIC STUFF. Being a Fan of things cartoony, I find all your FINE WORK inspiring & liberating. The Lucky Luke thingies remind me of Hobby Products Asterix the Barbarian range; Is there any connection?
Title: Re: Lucky Luke in 28mm (update 12/28)
Post by: white knight on 03 January 2011, 02:28:33 PM
Well, the Asterix and Lucky Luke are pretty much the same era of comics but otherwise are not connected. However some of the models I used here are made by Pixi, who also made 28mm prepainted metal Asterix figures in the same style, that are compatible with the Hobby Products range once stripped.

They are hard to get. Most of them were part of a monthly collection by edition atlas (like the tintin cars) in France. Some of the others are made by Pixi and you can still get them from the site Pixifolies but they are expensive.

You can get most of the main characters (Luke, the Daltons, the dog, the undertaker) and a few others still on Priceminister as these were the first numbers of the collection and you could just buy these in newspaper stores in France  for a while.

Also Asterix co-creator René Goscinny wrote Lucky Luke for about 10 years.

Post by: white knight on 02 January 2017, 03:35:59 PM
Wow, that's a bit of threadomancy, but I prefer to keep the project in a single thread. First of, I put all the pictures from the project in a new blog (among other things), as I see some of the picture links in this thread are broken anyway. The new blog is: http://bd-wars.blogspot.be/search/label/All%20Lucky%20Luke (http://bd-wars.blogspot.be/search/label/All%20Lucky%20Luke)

The next addition to the Lucky Luke project was quite unplanned. I accidentally found the Lemax christmas ornament "River Belle" and thought it could work with the project. As an added bonus, it has a passing resemblance to the Daysy Belle from the "Boat race on the Mississippi" album. Not quite the same, but close enough.

Here it is straight out of the box with the christmas lights still attached and a couple (to be stripped) Atlas Lucky Luke figures for scale. As can be seen, the ship has the same undersized but with exagerated details thing going as the vehicles and houses in the Lucky Luke range, which gives it the right cartoony feel.

The main downside of these Lemax pieces is the material. The body is made from a type of ceramic that holds reasonable detail, but can't really be modified much and weighs a bit more than your average resin piece.

I went to town on it and started stripping the christmas lights (and the inside batteries ans stuff). I also noticed that the plastic railings and resin details were glued on with heavy handed doses of hot glue, so those had to come off too, to be cleaned and reattached after painting. I couldn't get the steering cabin loose from the main body, despite using liberal doses of Aceton on the glue, so had to pry out the pilot and will have to make sure the replacement I make for him is not too big and can be put back in.

The detail bits. I'll leave off the benches and passengers. These are actually perfect 28mm scale for once (most of the time, the Lemax figures are 40mm and up), so they will be put away for later use in IHMN/EOTD Victorian games.

So here's where we are now. Another look of the stripped down Belle with some Atlas Lucky Luke figures. Next step will be to do something about those christmas wreaths attached to the sides (although the material being so hard to work with, I may just paint them as they aren't too conspicuous) and fill in the gaps in the upper deck planking where I removed the benches. Also need to remove the moulded "River" and replace with "Daisy" for the name.

I'll also need to convert me a Captain Barrows to go with it too.

I have that Lucky Luke on order. I like the figures, but they're... odd... not quite as full on cartoony as the ones I'm using, but more cartoony than can reasonably be mixed with regular 28mm.  :)

Very little progress made on the boat. Screwed off the waterwheel so it will be easier to paint, cleaned up the detail pieces and filled some holes with greenstuff.

Some progress made on converting the captain and pilot, based on the ones from the "Boatrace on the Mississippi" story, but they aren't finished yet.  :)

Been stripping more spare models and converting up new characters (or variants of characters), so hopefully will have some more updates here soon.

One of the goals is to do mounted versions of the armed characters, so I have mounted and dismounted versions of the same.
