Just like I have announced on my blog on February 28, I am planning to run a campaign set on "Rynn's World" - home of the Crimson Fists chapter of Space Marines and target of an invasion of brutal Ork forces.
These are my first painted up Rogue Trader 40k era models that I've finished. A squad of Crimson Fists Space Marines with a rocket launcher.
When I decided to only pick models from that era of Citadel's miniatures that I wanted to use for this project, I also came to the conclusion that they need to have that old school 40k look. In other words: painted on rank insignia and chapter emblem and helmet stripes - no decals whatsoever (these are my first free hand painting attempts ever in 22+ years of table top wargaming!)
The squad consists entirely of models made from the sprues included in RTB01, these were the first ever produced plastic Astartes. The only exception being the Sergeant's head, which is a trimmed down Veteran Sergeant Culln from Forgeworld. Another premiere in my hobby history is that I have also painted the eyes of the bare headed marine. I am getting more confident about painting such details now that I can see the result which in my own humble opinion is not too bad for someone who never bothered doing so before. ;-)
This project is going to get my very best of painting skills ever. I am absolutely in love with Citadel's early range of Beakies. Enough of the words though, I know without pics it didn't happen. ^^

Squad #1
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m185/Plasmasturm/Rynns%20World%20Campaign/40k%20Crimson%20Fists_zpsrae3zrxw.jpg)
Sergeant, three Marines with Bolters, one rocket launcher.
On the Sergeant I made use of the bits that are included on the sprues.
Hand painted Crimson Fists chapter emblem and Sergeant rank insignia.
Squad leaders have a red stripe with yellow trim on their helmets.
One could argue that a veteran must have a red diamond in his rank insignia but I am only going to give that to those who have better stats (so, those that are veterans by profile).
In addition to the first plastic squad I have painted up another squad leader. This one will see action in a mission out of the second edition 40k starter set (part of "Battle for Armageddon" booklet). This is a pewter figure whose only mod was to update the Chainsword with a modern plastic Cadian Shock Troopers one. This looks better IMO.
I love that dude, the pose is just awesome. Finally a model that looks like its fencing in close combat - and he's from 1987!
The new sword does improve the model a lot. I had to use a Chainsword from the Cadians though - a modern plastic Marine sword is just too tall.
Since he doesn't have the stuts in his should pad I decided to use the blank space for a Crimson Fists symbol. Note the yellow trim on the helmet, just like the plastic squad leader above.

Rank insignia of a Sergeant.
Stay tuned for more updates.

Very good 8)
Love me a bit of RT :)

Tremendously lovely! :-* Top notch, you really got the vibe :)
-
Cant wait to see more! Just started my own 40k project and will be looking to this for inspiration! Any pics of them unpainted?
-
I'm too young to have the RT/Oldhammer nostalgia that's rife on here ;D but I do love me some beaky marines. Lovely painting!
-
Nice.
Well done.
Do more. :D
-
Wow, very nice - excellent pallette for the Fists, and the crispness of the paint jobis impressive.
Not to mention the nostalgia factor here :D 8) 8) 8)
-
I definately like where this is going.
-
Very nice. I've a little C100 marine project on the go too. Liking this alot.
The Commander.
-
Lovely work. The hand painted insignia is very well done.
Look forward to seeing the force grow. :D
-
Brilliant.

The free hand work is excellent.
Most inspirational.
:-* :-*
-
Great project, your clean, crisp painting brings out the best in those lovely old sculpts. :-*
-
Excellent project and very nice painting! :)
-
Love it! Great paint jobs (love the weathered and darker blue look for the Crimson Fists. Great freehand work too!
I'm doing my own Rynn's World project as well using new models to recreate the old. I just finished putting together a Pedro Kantor in beakie parts using new stuff but equipped as he was in the original RT book (I don't like the new mk 7 armor Kantor). I have the Orks and a fists tactical squad painted. I'd like to do a Thrugg Bullneck and Hruk. Just need a few terrain items yet and I can run my own Battle at the Farm.
I'll share pics of mine when I get a chance. Nice to see Rogue Trader inspired projects!
-
Thanks a lot guys. ;)
Next squad's humble beginnings (no plastic miniatures in this squad):

Nice: the RT metals are where it's at! :)

There ya go!
After a little delay (its called real life I guess...) here is squad #2 of my Rogue Trader Crimson Fists:
Squad #2, all metal from 1987

I just love that aiming squad leader figure!
..so here he is close up.
There were two more figures I finished at the same time. One is a lascannon that one day will be part of a support squad and the other miniature is going to be Veteran Sergeant Huron Grimm who is going to see action in the "Battle for Jadeberry Hill" scenario.
I wasn't sure about adding gems to a space marine but in the end I think it looks not too bad.

Veteran Sergeant Huron Grimm
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m185/Plasmasturm/Rynns%20World%20Campaign/Huron%20Grimm%20Front_zpstw17room.jpg)
One of the cool things about RT era miniatures is that their guns don't have that heroic scale. A bolt pistol actually is small like its supposed to be compared to the guy wielding it.
More to come guys. I promise!
-
Great tread, I follow it with pleasure! Like a lot tour work on red and the free hand too :-*
-
@all: thank you, guys!
In a forum someone asked for a pic before the paint was applied. Here you go - the servitors are working hard and mindless to produce even more WH40k RT era Mk. VI power armour ;-)
I use "UHU patafix" strips (I think you guys in the English speaking countries know it as "blu tack") to attach my figures to that piece of wood - its an easy way to use spray primer on them because you can turn them without falling down and get the primer everywhere. The weapons have been temporarily pinned to old flight bases to handle them while painting.
-
Keep them coming :)
cheers
James
-
Really lovely work, my admiration! :)
-
Great stuff! More!
:)
-
These look stellar! My best friend had a Crimson Fist army. So I've seen a lot of that paint scheme, but I never saw it look so good.
-
After being away from the painting table for two weekends, I managed to finish the first few models of what's going to be two support squads for the Crimson Fists army.
A mix of Lascannons and Heavy Bolters - still missing are the Missile Launchers and the Sergeants.

Excellent! Great to see more of your work :)
-
Lovely work on these :)
It is good to see the old miniatures painted in a 'toned down' fashion and still using the insignia of the day.
Keep up the good work :)
-
Very nice work, as usual!
-
More amazing work. Though this is before my time, me being a young gun, I am a 40k fan and love to see this!
-
They look absolutely great.
-
Top notch! :) I love Beakie Marines, and your hand-painted insignia and Crimson Fists color scheme do RT proud. :)
I really like the gems on the lascannon, I've always liked the idea of a Marine commemorating kills on his weapon. Perhaps he killed some Eldar vehicles?
-
Crimson Fists NCO academy? Some Sergeants finished!
In the few hours of spare time that I have had available during vacation (mostly speding time for refurbishing the house/garage and tidying up my garden), I still managed to get some Sergeants done for various squads.

... next: squad mates!
-
Nicely done! I love these RT-era Marines, such characters. :)
-
Nice work! Love the chevrons. I was always intimidated by those and avoided painting them.
Love the colors you are using on your Fists. That deep blue looks great.
-
Nicely done! I love these RT-era Marines, such characters. :)
Thanks! As nice as the new options with plastic Astartes are - nothing has as much character as those old sculpts. Really every single one is an individual with its own details. Like the Support SGT with bionic eye - you can see the scars that criss-cross his face - might have been an Ork choppa?!
Or the guy that was almost blown out of his Mk.6 Corvus armour, cuts and bullet holes all over him - but he's still standing, though although he is "trans-human" you can clearly see the exhausting toll the battle took written in his face expression.
-
^ Indeed! I have a couple of RT Marine officers, they look very commanding and composed.
I need to finish them, those old warriors deserve to fight again. :)
-
nice - very old school :D
-
Those look great. Loads of character.
-
Good work mate! Really fancy that armour! :-*
-
NCO Academy :D
Great, I do love them!
-
Great stuff! Enjoyed the pictures alot!
-
Thanks for your kind words to everybody. The next 5 brother-Marines are on the painting table, bases done already. There is also some 10+ other figures for the Orks, but I haven't touched these other then adding primer.
-
Very nice work :)
-
So, here is another minor update: one more Sergeant with scanner device (Signum) and two more guys with missile launchers done. That means, the two Devastator Squads of the Battle Company are finally done.

The stripes on the sergeants helmet look really good and scream RT to me.

Glad you're carrying on with these 8)

Brilliant! Great to see this thread continue, especially with the Space Hulk one popping up next to it. :-*
Your basing really sets off the blue of the marines.
-
I love it! I have most of these figures in one of my cases. You are doing beautiful work here.
-
Thanks, guys. 8)
Some of the Marines I have shown before, but they've been increased in numbers with more boltgun carrying Marines and the flamers have been added to the squads.

Wonderful!
:-* :-*
Now I want to work on some Space Marines, which is not so good......
-
You can never get tired of these beauties, specially when they are painted this good! :-*
-
Nothing finer than nostalgic well painted minis.
-
I have finished my (jet)bikes for the Crimson Fists project. Currently I am working on the riders for these little machines that look like a Battlefleet Gothic cruiser had sex with an Eldar jetbike and this is the result.
Nice models they are, nonetheless.

(Last pic had me humming ride of the valkyries...)

Very nice. Will these have metal or plastic models as riders?

A combination of both.

Absolutely marvellous :-* :-* :-*
-
Hah remember having a couple of them back in the day I had a chaos renegade with a vortex grenade mounted on it ....pure cheese and pure carnage ....Ahhhh 1st edition 40K when the only rule in our school gaming group seemed to be "there are no rules" when it came to power gaming. :D
-
Brilliant!
:-* :-*
They look great, so good you got me looking at getting some before common sense prevailed and I realised that I just would not have time to do anything with them.
;)
-
I always thought the jetbikes would look great with Arbites on them...mainly because I get much more of a Judge Dredd feel to them than space marines. Great work on the bikes!
-
Splendid :D
cheers
James
-
Only just seen this thread. Lovely work on the old marines. You're highlights on the blue are spot on, enough to see without looking like Tron.
-
Not going to update my photobucket account. Older pics are still up in my blog (see signature).
Anyways, quick update: recon squad done!

My word! These are amazing!

Simply Outstanding! Jet bikes and some serious veterans, the RTB01's, I find the work you have done just fantastic! More please...

Love the jetbikes.

Thanks a lot guys, there is more stuff to come.
