I've been playing a bit of BattleTech: Alpha Strike lately and decided I wanted to work on a special table for the game. After digging through my pile of BattleTech maps, I decided to try my hand a building a Sink Hole table.
While I'm building this primarily for use with BattleTech games, it will work for many of the other games that I play. It will also work for games of various scales; 6mm, 15mm, 28mm. I love versatile terrain.
My goal is to get a 4' x 6' table that can be set up in different layouts.
My first step was to sketch out the basic layout on some graph paper. This is my basic guide.

After doing some cutting I think I've decided to do two 2' x 2' sections and two 2' x 4' sections, but haven't completely settled on that decision.
After cutting up some 1" pink foam boards, I started cutting out shapes according to the sketches. This is the first section I have and I think it looks pretty good.

I will texture this with caulk and then add flock. I thought about a dessert look, but will likely make it match my existing hills so they can be used together.

I've made some progress and now have 4 of the 6 board sections cut.
Here are the sections placed together to give you an idea of what this will look like when I'm done. Each section is 2' x 2'.

With the boards cut it is time to start texturing the cliff walls. I'm using caulk for this.

It doesn't look like much now, but when I get some paint on this, I promise it will look better.
As always you can see more details on my blog. http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/03/terrain-project-sink-holes-part-3.html (http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/03/terrain-project-sink-holes-part-3.html)

The caulk looks good! Excited to see the finished product.

That's brilliant 8) 8) 8)

Nice stuff. Makes it even easier to jump on top of an opposing mech.

I have to admit to being intrigued. What's the concept for a sinkhole board?
-
Looking good.
I look forward to seeing them in action.
Battletech was my into to wargaming back in 1985 and it warms my heart to see it still going.

The idea is drawn from an old BattleTech map. I think of it as the surface above a collapsed mine.

I got a good amount of time in on this project over the weekend. I've finished two boards and have two more ready for flock.

My hot knife has developed a problem so I've got to get a replacement (or get it fixed) before I can cut the foam for the final boards.

Indeed. The holes look like you realy can sink into them. Cool idea. :-)

I have finished 4 sections to give me a 4' x 4' playing area. I still plan to do 2 more sections, but I'm going to take a break from this project and work on painting some Epic Imperial Guard.
These can be turned and moved to give a little different layout. I also have hills to match that can be place on these to add even more variety to the layout.
Here you can see all 4 sections laid out ready for battle.

And here you can see some BattleTech Mechs thrown in for scale. Thanks go out to my buddy Bill for the painted Battlemaster model. It looks great.

I still have plans for (at least) 2 more sections.
I hope to get a game in using these in the next week or two. I will post an AAR with some pictures whenever that game happens.
