In case somebody, like me, have plenty of arab minis to paint and field Vs his Foreign Legion castings and want more variety ..i discovered an Italian Orientalist painter , Giulio Rosati, who seemd to have a certain penchant for armed tribesemenand beautifully attired horses:

Paco...puisque vous faites le zouave. :)...may i ask you if zouaves units saw some action during the pacifification of Algeria and, above all, during the conquest of Maroc and Saharian Oasis..from 1900....as i have quite a few castings which could be painted either as Turcos or Zouaves..but, from what i read majority of troops employed where Légionaires, Tirailleurs, Turcos, Joyeux but not Zouaves...i cannot decide if it would be useful to paint some of my minis as Zouaves instead , as the majority, as Turcos...
merci beaucoup

Zouaves saw action each time during first part of colonisation of algeria (1830-1870) . After 1875, as zouaves weren't engaged privates as before ( conscripts from France and algeria) , they were more "sovereignty" troops than first line troops like FFL, joyeux , turcos etc .... ! But they saw action in Tunisia (1881) south west algeria (1886 to 1910) and marocco from 1908 to 1925. None in sahara were it was only turcos , spahis , "troupes colonial" (southern sahara, soudan, tchad) and saharian troops (raised with turco).
