Looking over this article....
http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/2015/03/double-duty-part-two-gundams-that-dont.html
I am specifically interested in the Grimoire and the Hi-Mock. Though the Jesta's and Snipers could find a place.
Does anyone have any personal experiences with using 1/144 Gundams, listed above, scaled with 15mm infantry and support? One thing to read that it should scale properly but another to actually see it.

I own a few models in that scale and in my opinion they work great with 15mm. Heck they even work well with 28 for that matter since there is very little that gives the scale away. All the kits mentioned in the article are relatively new and high end, which you might want to look for. Older and cheaper kits, while still very nice, do tend to have rubbery pieces for joints which won't take paint well. Tough they are generally in a flat grey which is ok.
I also really liked the look of the grimoire, and considered adding that to my games. To further your list, Here is the LOTO, its a transforming mech/tank with pretty much no gundam look and it comes in a handy two pack since its a grunt.

"Gundams that don't look like Gundams" is a good description of the problem... Cheap, quality kits... that mostly look like space samurai :(
I find the Zaku I, despite its ubiquity, isn't too bad - it looks more techy and less cartoony than many. It may help that I'm not familiar with the source material at all. Could be a British thing, could just be me. A spot of weathering or a camo paintjob goes a long way. I could see Z'Goks and Hy-Goggs being a more alien take on the idea too.
That Grimoire does look tempting...
-
I have tons of gundams and the 1/144's will look great with 15mm. THey look good with 28mm too.
I have built most of my collection out of gundams that work with minis and look more star wars than samuri.
Gera Zulu
Hy-Gogg
Zaku I and Zaku II
Desert Zaku
Therian Ground type
Geouf Flight type (maybe a bit too anime this one but I think its ace.)
are all good buys.
I'd use 1/144th too, you can get even smaller which are great. The 1/100th ones are just HUGE so unless you got a big table, hard to fit in lol
-
That Grimoire looks like it could fit right in with a Tau army... 8)
I've never been a huge fan of the Gundam series, simply because the size and scope of those mecha just screams 'munchkin' to me, but I do admit there are some interesting designs in there.
I've got a Battletech project in 15mm (that's sort of on hold at the moment), for which I use a wide variety of kits, in sometimes weird scales, mostly from Robotech (and several other series).
It's quite a challenge to get those mechs scaled correct though, hence some rather obscure scales such as 1/170, 1/200 and 1/120, as the original mecha are often sized differently from the Battletech ones, even though the designs are exactly the same (in the case of the Unseen mechs of course).
The internal Japanese market has a lot of kits that are rarely or even never seen ouside of the country, with designs running from serious hard scifi armoured suits to zany, completely over the top planetsized transforming mecha of doom. And there are tons that would be just perfect for use on the tabletop...

I have one of the Assault Kingdom Gundam mecha (8€ here)
Come already assembled.
Details aren't exceptional.
It's 1/225 scale I believe, but it works for me near a 28mm scale mini.
-
Here's one with a range of minis for scale and appearance comparison:
Back row: three 1/144 Zaku I snipers. They've since been weathered, although marking the panel lines or pin-washing to bring out the details would also help
Middle row: Assault Kingdom Z'Gok, another super-deformed mecha thingy
Front row: Old Crow tank, Space Marine, Dreamforge trooper (28mm), AT-43 Fire Toad walker

got this one today. Freakin perfect as its wonderfully generic and costs SFA. $13AU which is cheaper n chips here.
Scurv, you have had this for an entire day and it is yet built and standing next to a 15mm mini for comparison?
What have you been doing man?
Slap a 28mm mini next to it as well when you can.
Trying to get contact with my local hobby shop to get prices and get a few things possibly ordered. They seem to not wanna make money cause days later and 2 calls from me and no one is calling me back. Oh well. There is always HLJ.

This gundam is far better than most though as its so damm generic.
Oh sweet irony there. You know I would love for wargames factory to make a dreamforge quality higly modular and generic mech. Tough that would never be even near the price of this one.

The super-deformed mecha is a FW Gundam Converge 13 - Asshimar. Here it is in a better befitting outfit for the battlefield.

Hi-Mock straight off the bench before weathering and what not next to a 28mm rocket girl for scale.
Hey Scurv, thanks for the quick build and post of the HI-Mock. Looks good but still so damn big for my needs. Damn :-( But if you wanted a big stompy that would be a good basis mecha. Like you said, lotso f potential.
Anyone have any links on smaller Gundams? There is a 1/400 line isn't there? How about something in the 1/300 scale or between 1/300 and 1/400???

I have smaller ones as well about half that size. They are not kits but like action figures.
these are very gaming friendly in terms of size and are no bigger than most medium miniature mecha like dreadnoughts and war walkers or some AT-43 stuff for example.
Ah yes, i saw this guy before. 1/200 scale if i recall correctly.
Any chance of unboxing and posing with the 1/144 and 28mm fig for those who are interested?
some other options for 15mm is the heavy gear mechs. Some of them are quite large and some are about the same size as a 28mm figure.
Yep, the old RAFM 1/87 scale gears have been sought for peeps looking for power suits for 15mm. Not big enough for 28mm but can be good bots for that scale.
I have a few already and keep a look out on eBay and cons for more.
What is the look you are going for with the mecha? I assume its not giant robots if the 1/144's are too big.
Not looking for giant robots. Yes the 1/144 scale Gundams are too big. But Gundams are huge flipping mecha as it is.
I am looking for powered suits 15mm, even 28mm. I am a fan of VOTOMs. I have various VOTOMs, in many scales, to see what works with what. Be they the gasphon to the 1/48 or 1/35 scale kits and a few in between.
This post by Dr F is a great resource of inspiration. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55782.0
In the end i like all sorts of mecha. For me i am looking for what works w/o getting into the ridiculous.

There's a number of 1/300 and 1/400 lines.
Necromundicon/IronHands has done gaming with them.
http://www.ironhands.com/gundamsog.html
I actually just finished up a commission gig building a few buildings in that style for a guy that is trying a similar project. There was some additional review of 1/300 gundam possibilities here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/636827.page
I think that 1/300 would be an ideal size for Gundam battles. Gundam's are just so gosh darn huge (even for 15mm) in 1/144 that you have to build rather alot of large'ish terrain to actually block line of sight. 1/144 Gundam are considerably more than twice the size of 1/144 battletech ( Mechwarrior clix) universe mecha. As some folks have said, they can be used for 28mm, though probably as autonomous droids as it's hard to imagine a 28mm pilot fitting in there.
My buddy did paint up a bunch of the old-style 1/100 ZAKU's for our 28mm Mech Attack game and they look great in that scale.

No figs for scale there, but you can see the stacked AT43 containers to get some idea.

Hi-Mock straight off the bench before weathering and what not next to a 28mm rocket girl for scale.
He/it normally comes in green but I sprayed it that sandy yellow. I will figure something out for the scheme.
* the next bit is pure waffle*
My 2 cents worth is this is about the 'right' size for this sort of thing. Its big enough that you can fit a person inside it and all the machinery and on the table its impressive without being stupid big. many of the other gundam come with crap tons of weapons but this one only comes with the beam rifle. Plenty of room to kitbash 28mm scale weapon on it to taste though. THe 2 wrist plates are perfect mounts for all sorts of stuff.
This gundam is far better than most though as its so damm generic. Its a man shaped mecha that would go with anything from pulp to supers to sci fi. Its also about $10 US which is a fraction of the cost of other mecha.
I could totally see this as a Lex Corp Death Bot or Hydra War-Bot.

Kind of reminds me of Titanfall. Has anyontried that as a scenario?
-
I'm always on the look out for smaller mechs for 15mm, ones that look battle suit size, like from Appleseed, or 40K dreadnoughts or slightly bigger. It's a pity they never seem to put them beside anything that gives a sense of scale. 1/144 is fair enough, but if you don't know how big the damn thing is to start with its doesn't help that much. That's a long way round of saying thanks for the pictures! I now know 1/144 gundams are far too big.
-
If its large 15 battlesuits you want then gashapon 1/300 should do the trick. I wish I could give you pictures but the one I ever bought was a gift for a now ex.
-
Titanfall is a good comparison of Hank in his 1/144 scale for 28mm.
For 15mm or even 28mm though i would like to see Hank half that size.
Scurv, thanks for the new pic. He is still a big boy but couldn't be a powered suit. A robot for sure, but still a bit big.
Dr. F has a great grasp on using bots or droids from other lines as i posted before.
Dijit, i agree with your conclusion as well, 1/144 is too big. BUT, Gundams are frickin huge and i expected as much even at 1/144.
Take a BT mech as mentioned above and put it into 1/144 scale. It would be a different size. To me MW Clix are not 1/144 scale. They work ok in 10mm - 12mm scale. Even the big boys i dont see work in 15mm for suits. Robots for sure. I personally like using the Targe, Raven, Mongoose and a few others for 15mm but i am stretching it a bit. The Blade is a new one i saw done on a BLOG that i think might get away as well. Need one in my collection. So now on the lookout for a couple.
as stated above, the old RAFM HG line can be great. Scopedogs have a great place. Inso loves them in 1/35 for his Grymn. I personally think that the 1/48 scale would be a better fit for that series. The 1/60 scale Scopedogs though too small for 28mms scale. But i can see them working for true 25mm or down to 15mm.
To each his won. All in the eye oft he beholder and all that jazz. Am i picky? LOL yeah a bit.
Still just waiting for someone to do Scopedogs in 1/100 scale to truly make me happy. They are doing it for Battletech mechs but cant get a sculptor for VOTOMs.
Eilif, I Have been enjoying Necro's stuff for years. I Know there is the 1/300 and 1/400 scale stuff. I wasn't specific. I meant was there figs like Hank in those scales. I dont much like the over the top anime Gundamns, more of a plain Jane type of person. As much as the Zaku is the mainstay and tons of peeps love em i am not a HUGE fan of them. I dont like the skirts or bellbottoms most of the series has in one shape or another. The things you all in Chicago bring to the table is pretty hot. If i was going to do a strictly Gundam game then easy peasy but it isn't what i am looking for.

If you want battlesuits, check out the 1/300 gundam comparison pics in the thread I posted earlier. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/636827.page
The pics are a bit big, but it's worth waiting for them to load.

Hey Scurv, here is my recent acquisition. Each joint comes apart.
Mine seems to be missing the knife. Also though it isnt missing but a pinpoint or hardpoint is on the right shin for another armor piece.

Nope. No big gun. Only the one strapped to his arm. What ya see is what i got. Just a bit pissy the knife is missing. :-(
I see your big version has a big gun. Butt he smaller one you got doesn't. Or did you just leave it off for his mugshot?

By the way, just burbled this on TMP; no guarantees as to whether you'll find any locally. Also, assume just the US.
Walked into a local Barnes and Noble, and saw the clearance tables were down to 25% of original price. I always expect slim pickings, and wasn't far wrong, certainly compared to the last few clearance cycles.
However, I noticed a couple of versions of Gundams, Destiny and Freedom, I think, on the floor. They are 1/144, and described as 'palm models', but for $10 USD or less, might be of interest to the 15mm crowd as small walkers.
Not to me; I have a personal problem, a slight aversion to anthropomorphic vehicles, a serious issue as I'm also an anime junkie…
However, as you might assume from a cross-post to Spaceship gaming, the kit has a gajillion small parts, many that seem appropriate for kitbashing your own fleets.
I've seen some amazing things come out of these experiments, and think everyone who has a B&N close by should probably take a look.
Not the walking bricks, but might be useful for someone.
