Title: Military Ogres?
Post by: archangel1 on October 02, 2008, 06:28:33 PM
One of these possibly fits here but the other is out by a war.  Here goes anyway.  Have you seen the new Ogres from Scibor? Very cool!

VERY nice.  Wish Scibor didn't charge so much though.  I've turned away from his website in the past, intrigued by his minis, but turned off by his prices.

I don't think they're particularly expensive.  Compared to GW, they are an absolute bargain!  The Ogres are only $17 for a figure that's nearly 2'' tall.  Of course, I'm used to paying 2 or 3 times that for 54mm's or bigger.  I guess if you're on a modelling budget, it's pricey, though, if you normally pay $2-3 per figure.

Pretty interesting stuff there. Been a while since I've went to Scibor's site.

Anyone know how well his stuff scales up next to Copplestone, or Hasslefree?

Generally looking a little press moulded in comparison... however these actually look sculpted rather than copied. Saw them a while ago, would suit the 40K styled prussians that are available from a german mini company whose name escapes me.

While his standard of work is pretty high, I don't really like the pressed look much, mentioned above. However his work usually solicits a :o from everyone else, it doesn't always do that for me. These are nice though.

Been a while since I've compared the price of a mini to what I could get from GW.

I felt the same way....  Lovely figs, not so hot prices.  17 for a oger?  That IS GW pricing....

I balked at the price...

I think those are very nice and characterful 40 mm miniatures and at 11,50 EUR very reasonable priced if you think about that small series produced and what other companies charge you for a single 28 mm sometimes ...

But I just emailed Scibor about the missing 2 other blokes he did; the group consists of 4 figures as you can see at the Greens page.

And what the f... does "pressed look" mean? Could anybody please enlighten me?

Thanks.

I think they mean pressmoulded, something Scibor is often guilty of. It means you make a mould of a part of an existing figure and then you press it into greenstuff to duplicate that part. He often does it for conversions of GW models and has been suspected/accused of doing it in some of his commercially available models. It's perfectly fine if you copy your own stuff, but dubious if you copy bits of other people's minis (which he has also been suspected of).

Oh, now it clears up ..., thanks for the explanation  :)

As a (once) professional sculptor of miniatures myself I think I'm able to recognize if someone is a talented sculptor or not. And Scibor is a gifted one! I don't know if he had done some copyright violations or not in the past, but the four "Prussian Ogres" are definitely sculpted in Greenstuff with added weapons etc. built from polystyrol plastic.

And, looking through his tutorials, he has a very clever approach to design complicated patterns from greenstuff. That is also his own invention, as far as I can see it.

Anyway, as soon as all four ogres are available, I'll order them. They are just too good  :-*

Oh hey, white knight, you just reminded me. I think that's why I stopped looking at his stuff those bunch of years ago. Wasn't too impressed when I found out what he had been up to. He got into crap for press molding his conversions(replicants, so in a sense not-so-mass-produced) and selling them on ebay and what-not. He's cleaned his act up though.

After seeing the coolminiornot link they don;t really come up that well painted. Or maybe the paintjob was just... lacking.
