Title: Gaming James Bond?
Post by: Blofeld on April 06, 2015, 04:42:03 PM
As a life-long fan of both the novels and the films gaming Bond has always been an ambition of mine and with my 40k army finally finished there's now an opening for a new project. I was wondering if anyone had gamed James Bond in any of his guises before or had any advice to give on rules, figures, vehicles, terrain etc. Rogue miniatures produce a brilliant Roger More-esque figure in Live and Let Die mode with black fatigues and leather shoulder holster, also similar to the one Daniel Craig is seen wearing in the new Spectre teaser poster. I'm particularly interested in gaming more recent films such as Skyfall and Casino Royale so any help in this regard would be great. Hope this is the right board for James Bond posts.
Thanks

For figures I'd look at Crooked Dice and also Copplestone's Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang range, plenty to choose from there.

Artizan did the other half of the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang line. They'll be worth a look. Reaper's Chronoscope line has some good choices as well. You'll have to check the sizes though, as they run pretty large in certain cases.  As for scenery, Reaper just started making some modern street scene pieces with their recent Bones line. You can look for modern buildings at Railroad stores. With all the interest in Infinity, finding hi tech computers and consoles is much easier then it was in the past.

The only Bond game I ever played was the role playing game from Victory Games. It's older the dirt, but was lots of fun at the time. For a miniatures game, you can't get any more Bond then 7TV from Crooked Dice.

Rules-wise I'd be looking at Crooked Dice's 7TV for the 'movie' feel, or 'Pulp Alley' for a slightly different slant. As JB works solo or with a leading lady, or a small group of helpers, you need something along those lines for it to work as a game. Larger Than Life from Two Hour Wargames is another set that might fit the bill, but I've not played them yet.

In addition to some of the lovely choices above I might also add two more lovely options from Nexus Miniatures.

Here at Killer B Games www.killerbgames.com we do a set of retro spy action rules called Geezers Royale which are  in the same vein as our popular Geezers "Shut it!" rules. There is also a growing range of accompanying miniatures:

Geezers Royale looks interesting. Are the rules capable of handling a single agent with maybe one or two henchmen against a whole host of cheap henchmen? Also is a sort of campaign style linked games possible in the rules?
Thanks

Hi Blofeld,
Yes the rules can handle 1 agent with a few assistants vs a much larger force. The campaign system allows a figure to advance through character levels in order to reach Super Agent status. There are rules for frogmen, setting up secret bases, traps, car chases, helicopters and jet packs, spy gadgets, disguises and lots more.
Currently being sculpted are a team of commando types with wooly jumpers and wooly hats.

Sounds excellent, there's a suprising amount of choice out there in all regards, no the most difficult part is choosing which of the many options to go for!  :D
Thanks for all the suggestions so far

For rules I'd recommand TwoHourWargames' latest edition of Larger than life.
The system is great for solo or group play and while it's a miniature game, it also has some RPG elements to move your story along.

Sounds good. I'm looking forward to receiving these minis :) When do you expect the commando types will be ready for?

By the way, for those who like 15mm, we have a range as well:

They got sent off to the sculptor quite a while ago so should be ready soon. If you are of a certain age you may recognise their inspiration. I've ensured one of them at least will have a beard. They are similar to TNT Thompson but in rolled up wooly hats.

I use the Old TSR Top Secret rules you can buy on Ebay. The hand to hand and small arms combat is very very good. i use it for Skirmish and with Role play.

Best

Keep meaning to pick Geezers Royale up. Will they be available at Salute? I putting on a James Bond (skiing) game there with Maidstone Wargames Society.

I much prefer 15mm for my own gaming. Is it likely the spy Fi range will expand? I am looking forward to seeing your Arctic troops for some spy Fi scenarios.

I was thinking about making some Turkish henchmen in suits and fezes with mp40s, that's pretty 60s. :-)

Any other ideas on expansion?

I need look no further, and with envious eyes, at the various 25+mm ranges. In fairness, it's usually the character pieces I yearn for. You have shown how figures like your exobiologist can capture a well known character perfectly. So options and poses for various incarnations of spies from different organisations. In addition some more bodies, a large, steel toothed assassin, a figure with a robot/drill attachments too, hand. Ninjas with modern weapons. And various additional female characters, some armed and dangerous, some just alluring. Most of all, scuba divers (including female charachter scuba diver) with scooters, and maybe even mini subs. Armed Scuba figures on land. I'd also like jet skis too. I know that these may not be mainstream/viable, that of course has to be your decision, but I would love to see them nevertheless.

Seems like you are already going for some arctic figures, but spies in the snow and skiiers/skidoo a would be good. I would have put some of the snow stuff first but I have some for a 28mm game at Salute. Took a lot of conversion work too. I'd still like to see some alpine Arctic in 15mm though!
