I've been putting off getting stuck into my Medieval Russians and have been finding it hard to get motivated. As I have a brain like a grasshopper ( I leap from one idea to the next) I decided to start painting some Norse type figures for Of gods and Mortals ( the "mortals" will also double as a Lion Rampant Viking Faction).
First up is a Frost giant which I picked up cheap from Ebay. He's a D&D plastic mini which I have re-painted and re-based.

A quick size comparison pick with a gripping Beast plastic viking.

Next I've got a Valkyrie and a "mortal" Jarl on my painting table.

Awesome. I'm a huge fan of getting some pre-paints and "saving" them. They may not be brilliant miniatures, but for the cheap price you can find some gems and really polish them up. Looks good.

The Big Blue Guy turned out SPLENDIDLY...a GREAT paint job & a BEAUTIFUL base can do wonders. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Nice figure. It would fit with my nordic fantasy stuff well.
Just looked at ebay.de here to see if it is available. Its selling for around €21 most of the time which i consider MUCH too expensive for a plastic figure. I could get a metal one for that price.
Anyway, i like what you have done with it, and the base is beautiful!
-
Nice work.

Thank you all for the comments.
@ Steam Flunky: I managed to pick this one up for £14.00 inc postage, so I think I lucked in!
Anyhow, just finished my "mortal" Jarl. He's a Foundry Ltd Ed mini and is HUGE compared to a normal 28mm mini.

I might use him as an Odin "proxy" until my one from Northstar arrives.

Gorgeous! :-*

Just completed my Valkyrie for Of Gods and Mortals. She's from Reaper miniatures (metal not "bones") and I'm pretty pleased with her. I wasn't too sure about the shield as it's not "Norse" looking but I think it suits her.

PM, that is a rocking mini and a damn nice paintjob to boot.
I assume 25-28mm scale?
What size is the base?

Thanks guys.

She's actually quite tall (about 30mm from foot eye) but appears even taller because she's cast onto a raised rock base. I put her on a 40mm round base and added some more rocks to blend in with her integral base. As she's being used for Of gods and Mortals, she actually fits better by being a little tall.

I really like your Valkyrie!

The Jarl & the Warrior Babe are BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. They go well together...the tabloids would call then an item I'm sure. VERY WELL DONE once more...you have a real flair for Fantasy!

Great stuff! :)

Brilliant. :-*

Nice work on the lot of them! 8)

Thank you for the comments.
Next up is "Odin All-Father". He's from Northstar and is HUGE!!!! The base is made from stones from my garden.

Really enjoyed painting this one. Some parts are a little fragile so I'm a bit dubious about gaming with him.

"Odin, MIGHTY Odin!"...sorry I was having a The Vikings moment. Now that I've gotten that out of my system, The Big God Guy painted up WONDERFULLY...GREAT brushwork & basing. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks DeafNala.
I've just taken another view of him showing the front of the mini.

Next up will be the Goddess "Hel"..........

Just under-coated my next Fantasy mini. This time it is "Hel" Goddess of the Underworld. She is a 54mm resin War Griffon Miniatures with a custom built base. The Rune stone is resin (off Ebay), the "spirits" are from a horroclix mini as is her left hand. The staff is from a GW Battle Wizard.

Thanks for the additional view, Pappa. Those really are impressive miniatures AND BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. VERY WELL DONE once more!
Hel looks like a challenging figure; enjoy the painting et al.

:o :o
Just found this and: What a thread!
Great choices and conversions topped off with beautiful painting.
:-* :-*
OGAM is something that I am itching to get into myself.
I have a fair few things put together to get my Greek force going but find that I cannot resist other stuff too and have bits for Norse and Celts as well now.
::)
This thread is going to be pure inspiration when I get around to it.

Also just found the thread. Great work on Hel, I'm nicking all of those conversion ideas. 8)

Me too. Some cracking mini's in here. Valkyrie and Odin are my favourites. Thinking that Hel is gonna be amazing too. Keep up the great job. :o
-
Hel is going to be AWESOME!!!!
-
This is great! I'm so used to seeing 15mm, 28mm and so on that its kind of refreshing to see statuette sized Nordic figures! Can't wait to see Hel painted!
-
Just completed my "Hel" miniature. A little peeved with the casting lines on the ghosts but I think she turned out ok.

Next up Fenrir, Loki and Thor..........

She is BEAUTIFUL in a horrifying way. There are some mold lines that seem to only appear after the spray finish or once the photos are posted...they are a fine excuse to use some of those colorful expressions that are otherwise frowned upon. That aside, VERY WELL DONE!
-
A wonderfully inventive and original model taken to a great finish.
:-* :-*
-
Great figures and painting! Hope to get Odin on my painting desk soon ...

Great work. :-*

Wow, Hel is a really nice conversion with a great paint job.
-
Superb. :D
-
Cracking conversion
And great painting, creepy :-* :-* :-*

Thank you for the comments. I really enjoyed converting and painting her.
Next up a couple of WIP shots of Fenrir and Loki:
Fenrir is a Micro Arts Studio Great wolf on a custom base:

Loki is a slightly modded 54mm sorcerer mini from Nocturna on a custom base;

The wolf fur is perfect! Very well done.

FANTASTIC! That is one OUTSTANDING LOOKING Wolf. VERY WELL DONE!
Loki has a WONDERFULLY sneaky expression. Enjoy the painting et al!
-
Very cool! :o :-*
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
What size is it?
-
Thank you for the comments. I'm quite pleased with him.
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
What size is it?
He is HUGE! I know it was common to use these as "Thunderwolves" for 40k before GW brought out their own. The skull on the base is a 28mm Wargames Factory one to give an idea of scale.
Loki has a WONDERFULLY sneaky expression.
That's the main reason I chose him. I was going to re-sculpt his arm so he had a dagger behind his back but the body positioning made it a little impracticable without first "destroying" half the mini. As he was quite expensive I didn't want to risk messing him up.

They are great figures wonderfully painted :-*

To go with "Hel" I have just primed up some Draugr warriors for her to lead into battle.
They are GB Vikings, Conquest Norman Knights and Mantic Zombies/Ghouls all mashed together on Warbases trays.

Brilliant conversions!

This whole thread is great but those last ones are just excellent. :-*

And great inspiration for when I (Ever.... ::)) get around to doing my Army of the Dead, which will double up as 'undead' for Ogam.
Had all the kits for ages, but when I do crack on I now know exactly where to look.
Thank you!
:D
-
Great stuff; I'm impressed you managed to find a use for these plastic Vikings!
-
Lovely conversions. I can't wait to see them painted.
-
fantastic conversions I went for a simple option with GB heads on ghouls and zombies form mantic with GW skeletons weapon arms, yours put mine to shame
-
This is really lookig good. I am taking notes and stealing ideas left and right in this thread.
-
I have been pinching ideas form the Fimir thread on undead a bit like this and 023 for his nearly undead, having finished my Celtos Firbolg I am now painting the Gael as nearly dead with grey flesh.
With OGAM and Lion Rampant I find myself abandoning historical games and moving ever more into fantasy gaming which I haven't done since I was a youngster, also inpart inspired by the oldhammer threads on the interweb :D
-
Hel's Minions are a FINE LOOKING Group...SPLENDID kit bashing. GREAT WORK!
