Title: British Colonial settlements?
Post by: Mr.Marx on April 14, 2015, 09:02:51 PM
I wonder if I could pick your brains a little.

What kind of structures would make up a 1900-ish British colonial outpost? Particularly a newly established one? (If such a thing occurred at that time.)

Would it just be local buildings made to make-do? Or were western style buildings be erected?

I suppose they'd make extensive use of tents, but would they give way to more permanent 'prefabricated' huts, maybe akin to 'wild west' style structures?

My idea is to create a generic urban area that my Cosmic Rifle Company can defend defend, against whatever my opponent brings to the table.

I'm working in 15mil, if that would help with any recommendations.

Ideas?

Honestly it depends where and how accessible supplies are. For example the colonial buildings in Australia and South Africa are rather similar but Australia had far more tin roofs as it's settlements were all on the coast. The further inland in Africa you go the more likely the roof becomes a thatch variant.

One style of building you will always find in British settlements however is the cricket pavilion. The building style was used for many things at the time, but it's pretty much unchanged now, we just use it for cricket nowadays (and maybe make them in brick).
