-
Bolt action as set of rules, home made free french army list ;)
-
Is a Sahariana what I see in the background? The ESCI/ITALERI one?
-
no, it's a FOW one, found with a desert rat motorized platoon in a box unopened since ... some years :)

Poor quality :?
-
La Legion! I like them. :) They are *not* poor quality.
If you'd like some tips for improvement, I'd say a little refinement of uniforms and faces could be added, but they are a nicely finished and based force ready for play. :)
-
i was a best painter, before i began to have some visual troubles :)
sometimes i say that i paint in braille lol
-
Nice work Lou on the collection. Your knowledge is invaluable in addition to your attention to detail.
-
i follow your thread with strong interest! do you know which vehicles the free french forces had in north africa? especially in the battle of bir hakeim? The only informations i found only speak from 63 bren gun carriers and artillery. But i couldn't believe that there weren't no trucks or other vehicles.
-
thanks all ;)
from pics , the free french in bir hakeim used :
a large amount of carriers ( some modified with 25mmAT gun )
a dozen dodge Tanake armoured cars
chevrolet 30cwt with 75mm gun portee
unidentified 3ton trucks, some with 75mm gun portee ( GMC 2,5 ton ? Matford V8 , somethin else ? )
morris cs8 fitted with 25mmAT guns on naval mount
CMP 30CWT and 15CWT
a dodge as command vehicle
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/11/63/95/43/111.jpg)
some ambulance .
Later , Marmon Herrington, Crusaders, Bedford , Morris, etc .
for sure there were no tanks or other armoured cars
-
Thank you very much for these valuable informations! You mean with crusaders the tanks!? Yes?
What did you mean with later? The time of the evacuation?
-
most of the vehicles were lost at Bir Hakeim ;)
After Bir Hakeim, the spahis ( who were not involved in the last fight ) were issued with marmon Herrington Mk3 , and a squadron was equiped with 75mm self-propeled "conus-guns" .
The 1st Tank company was issued with Crusader Mk2 tanks ( later some Mk3 in replacement, then some Sherman ) .
The artillery regiment was issued with 25pdrs and BL 5.5-inch Medium Gun. ( with Morris tractors )
The Fusiliers Marins regiment was issued with Bofors 40mm
The North african anti-tank units were issued with 6pdrs ( but i think that they kept some 75mm guns )
infantry units have carriers , same number as british one
Transport was bedford trucks, CMP, and 2nd hand Morris 15CWT, captured german and italian trucks, jeeps,
-
Coming soon ( i will receive the parcell next week ) 3 Marmon Herrington Mk3 for the 1st Moroccan Spahis Régiment
(http://i59.servimg.com/u/f59/11/63/95/43/marmon10.jpg)
and a Chevy 30cwt for the Leclerc Forces in tchad .
And "la revanche" 5cm Pack38 AT gun portee on a CMP Ford , used by the 1st Tank Company .
( but for this one , i have to order a pack38 :D )
-
working on some crew for the Laffly ... I hate plastic but have to say that it's easier for this kind of job .
-
Lou,
your force is a really nice one that IMHO is too neglected by too many wargamers. I am curious though about the presence of a Lorraine Chennillette in Syria; can you point me to the source material(s) on this? I am only aware of the use of these tractors in metropolitan Europe and captured examples used by the D.A.K. as SP howitzer mounts (but not as supply tractors or APCs)....
-
helen has posted some pics , sometimes ago, i'll try to find it ;)
-
it was on the WWPD :
BEIRUT, SYRIA. 1941-08-11.
in the background , it's a Lorraine 37 .
Each tank platoon has a supply tractor , mostly Lorraine, even overseas
When the 342th tank company came back from Narvik , they came to GB with 12 H39 tanks, 4 Lorraine 37 supply tractor, and 2 SOMUA MCG 5 recovery . After june 1940, they became the 1st free french tank company , and kept the vehicles . (few pictorial evidences ) . And used them in Gabon and Syria ( from the records of veterans ).
There is a pic of one of the Somua in Gabon too ;)

Whoa! I knew about the Chars legere Hotchkiss H38/39s, but not that the company came with 4 Lorraine 37s nor the MCG5s! And clearly they "acquired" at least one Renault UE... OK, are there any reliable sources describing the camouflage paint schemes the FFL used on their tracteurs? You've given me an excuse to add a Lorraine 37 and another UE or two to my collection in something other than a monotone vert armee... :D
-
no, the renault UE were either Vichy captured ones or 13th DBLE foreign legion ones ( they were too in Narvik and came back to GB with the 9 renault UE . the only ones lost in Norway were those of the Chasseurs Alpins in Namsos ) .
the renault UE finished their service in Syria .
They all kept the french camo full olive green for the UE, the camo scheme used on my Lorraine was used on at least 1 supply carrier in Norway .
It's quite difficult to have reliable description of the free french stuff ...
we have few pictorial evidence, and the few veteran died .
there is something about the TRC Lorraine 37 in Minitracks New serie number 5 and from the same editor a "Focus on Renault UE" : http://www.minitracks.fr/index.htm (http://www.minitracks.fr/index.htm) ;)

Make of that what you will, but Michael Perry was interviewed in the latest Bolt Action podcast and stated his interest in the Syria campaign against Vichy forces, hinting he might do some figures at some point in the future.
Here's the link to the podcast, the juicy bit being approximately at 01:21:05 :

Here's hoping he'll do Senegalese tirailleurs, which nobody covers at the moment to the best of my knowledge.

And there was much rejoicing and celebration throughout the land! :D

I received my Mad Bob kickstarter renault UE this morning, stunning little stuff ;D

*Cough*
Let me rephrase my statement, m'lud : to the best of my knowledge, no one does Senegalese in proper tropical uniforms for the 1940/1941 campaigns in Africa and the middle East.
The defense rests, Your Honour.

I thought Artizan Designs had done 28mm Tirailleurs Senegalaise in tropical kit once upon a time, but it looks like they instead released Goumiers to accompany their Legion Etranger... funny thing that, as it was something like near on ten years ago that I exchanged e-mails with Artizan about releasing their Tirailleurs Senegalaise (and why it would be a good idea...)... :?

That's scratchbuilt isn't it? Cripes, that's some amazing work Lou! Damn! Doing up the bonnet, grill, and front fenders must've been a hell of a job - how'd you manage them?
-
If that's Lou's original scratchbuilt model he's wasted not doing masters for a manufacturer or three... 8)
-
he is doing some masters and moulding ;)

-
Oh my, that is beautiful. :-*
Thanks Lou for sharing the news.
-
Great work Lou...a man who gets stuff done...Well done sire!!
Now,
That particular vehicle...what can it be used for...French..time period? Anywhere else?
Basically, what utility beyond your planned use is there for this fine looking model?
Cheers
Happy W
-
this vehicle was the "modern" armored car of Vichy forces in Lebanon/Syria during exporter ...
after the fall of Vichy Levant
they became free french vehicles ...
some in service in Syria
the others with the Free French Moroccan Spahis
they became the bulk of the Scot columns in Bir Hakeim .
after syrian independance, some where used by the Syrian army ... one was still in quite good condition in Bagdad before the Islamists attacks ...
With the guys on the WWPD, we are working on a Bolt Action unofficial ( but historically accurate ;) ) Free French Army list 1940-1943, 1943-1944 mediterranean theater, 1944-1945 northern europe , including a theater selector for the Vichy forces in Levant and AFN ...
-
Thanks Lou.
Was this 'beast' around in 1935-36?
Happy W
-
no, it seem's that this beast was build in the first month of the war so 1939-1940 .
-
That's a bummer.
Nice 'truck'... ;D
Happy W
-
Will the Dodge Tanake be available to buy, and if so where from? Lovely model wanted one of these for a long time.
-
he is not finished ... but it will be ...
-
i'm waiting for the first mouldings.
there will be a dodge tanake and a dodge D60 truck
(http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/16/12/85/98/dodge_10.jpg)
... then, if there is no "problem" John will sold them ...
-
Is Lou P still with us? I haven't seen anything from him in ages. :'( :'(
-
Neither from Arlequin, do anybody know his whereabouts?
