Title: 17th century Spanish colonial militia/troops
Post by: drownte on April 30, 2015, 11:46:27 PM
Hey while I've found plenty of information on English and French colonial militia/troops in the 1600's but I haven't been able to get much on Spain.... Anyone have anything regarding organization, weapons, leadership, etc?

I'm having some trouble myself. I know hat the Spanish controlled the import of weapons to their colonies win a heavy hand. Many troops where armed with Arquebuses even in the 1670s. A few sources I've read talk about spanish lancers lurking about in the woods. I assume these are pikemen operating in a more skirmishy fashion but the spanish colonial forces definitely had cavalry so it's likely they where armed with lances also.

I know its not much but it may help.
See the movie Alatriste with Vigo Mortensen for some ideas.
