So, I've sifted through some threads in the past using plane kits such as Tamiya etc. for their 28mm games. I'm just poking about to see if which scale people use more often? 1/48th seems to be readily available, but its not quite the same as 28mm (which is actually 1/58th I believe).
What have other people used?
Also, has anyone ordered from Sloppy Jalopy at all? I have emailed the company and not had a reply yet. Just wondering what I can expect from them.

Scale is a continuing debate, but it's also pointless becasue 28mm is not a scale and while heightwise 28mm = 1/56th, some bits of the mini are 1/48, while others are 1/43.
Grosso modo, if you want to be able to fit a 28mm figure in the cockpit, 1/48 is the right scale in terms of bulk.

Plus 1/48 has long been one of the accepted standard scales for airplane models. Not much point in looking for 1/56, 1/60 or some such, because such "odd scale" models don't exist (other than a few examples from earlier times when kits were sized to fit standard boxes rather than standard scale). AFAIK, prebuilt and diecast collector's models usually fall into the standard scales, also.

Yep, ignoring the standard scale debate, for planes, go for 1/48th. Easy to get hold of and assuming you don't want open cockpit modern planes, bang on for fitting a figure in. The copplestone Back of Beyond pilots were sculpted to fit 1/48th pulp planes. Modern ones are a little awkward because of the cockpit shapes/seats, they are quite long, where as the figures tend to be broad.

So, my next question is: what kind of plane is the guy flying at the start of the Lost Ark? The one where Indy jumps into the river after being chased by the natives.

All I've come up with so far is the fact that it's a 1930's Waco biplane with floatation kit. Somewhere I've got a book or article which gives more details but where it is, I couldn't say. With my luck, it's buried under my lead mountain! ::)

I would say that it could be a Naval Aircraft Factory N3N-1 (http://www.aero-web.org/specs/naf/n3n-3.htm). This was a predecessor (...and bears a close resemblance as well!) of the more famous Stearman Kaydet. Just my $0.02 thoughts...

I usally use 1/43,1/48 or 1/50 they work well with the minis I use.

Thanks for the info! I scribbled down a list of planes that had a similar look from online auctions. Not sure if you're familiar with these but here goes:
De Havilland Airco DH-4 Eagle or DH9
Bristol F26 Fighter
Gloster Gladiator
Curtiss SOC-1 Seagull
Westland Lysander MKIII
I was looking for a plane that had at least a bit of carrying capacity, as most adventures we have use teams of 2+ models anyway.
I'll keep an eye open, but thanks again for the tips!

You left out helicopters! There were several Axis and Allied models during WWII and are made into 1/48 kits. Nothing like seeing a platoon of paras repel onto the battlefield from their Fa 223 Drache. Here's a list of some helos used in WWII.
