Hi All,
here are some photos of a Perry British soldier in Indian Service Dress. I have 24 of them almost finished as Royal Irish Fusiliers, and I thought I'd push on one to finish him and get comments before I finish the unit.

What does Everyone think? :)

Very nice, are they plastic of metal?
-
Excellent! :)

Thanx. :) This is metal, from this pack: https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_35_49&products_id=2384
One thing I did, I mis-understood my reference, and painted all the leggings blue, when it probably should have just been the officer. But, Mike Snook in "Go Strong into the Desert", said that there is a chance the RIF were wearing blue puttees. :)
23 more to go!

Nicely done. A very convincing khaki drab.
Personally, I think the blue is a bit vivid, i've tended to use a darker blue/grey on my NWF Brits, but it could well just be the light in the photo.
Look forward to seeing the rest. :)

Thanx. :) I just used Vallejo Khaki, with a green wash and a drybrush/ refinement of the Khaki.
Are the blankets too blue? Part of it may be the bright sunshine, but I could still tone them down if it looks funny.
EDIT: I just took a quick snap, using flash, right here at my PC desk, and the blue really reflects much more light than the eye sees. I wonder if I should do a gray wash?
-
Maybe a wash would help tone them down a little?
I know what you mean though, certain colours definitely stand out more once you have taken a photo of the figure.

Goodly work Anna Elizabeth 8) 8) 8)

Very nice job, Anna Elizabeth, and excellent shade of khaki! Since you asked, I will add my voice to Ray Earle's in suggesting the blue is too vibrant, even with the "everything seems brighter in a photograph" qualifier. The greatcoat or blanket-roll is usually depicted as being more of a darker blue-grey, and the puttees are generally not of the exact same shade of blue as the greatcoat. I would tone the puttees down as well, but not in a grayish fashion, just a slightly duller shade of blue, if you choose to keep them blue. I love those Perry "Indian service dress" British infantry, and have several units of them in my Second Afghan War collection. Whether or not you adjust the shades of blue, yours will definitely be well painted!
-
Very nice, but I'm thinking also that blue/grey would be a better shade for the puttess and blanket roll.
-
He looks really nice. I personally use vallejo luftwaffe uniform as a base then lightened with pastel blue. Remember, these are wargames figures and we have have to exaggerate colours at times to make them stand out. If you're happy with the result, that's the way it should be ;)
-
Good Morning Everyone, and thank you. :)
I think I will re-coat with Luftwaffe Uniform, I have it here and it won't be that difficult. :) The blues I used were Dark Prussian and a highlight of Intense, and in photos it's just too much. :)
I have to go to the eye doctor and get new eyeglasses today, maybe it'll be easier to pick colors after that. XD
I appreciate the input, I'd like these to be as "correct" as possible. :)

And....here we are. :) 2 done, with the overcoats re-painted. What does Everyone think?

Looking great I like the new blue much better than the original, excellent work though, far better than mine.
-
Top work Anna Elizabeth. :)
The switch to the newer blue/grey is much better in my humble opinion.
-
Thanx to you both. :) I'm pleased with them, this is the Vallejo Luftwaffe Uniform layered over the blue. I'm glad I got the opinions of people here, I think they will look much better now. :)
-
Yes, definitely an improvement, that's my maternal grandfather,s old regiment , by the way.
-
That's awesome, Belisarius! When did he serve with them?
And thank you, I like them betters with the blue-gray too. :)
-
I also think the new color looks great! Well done. Look forward to seeing the flu unit when you complete them.

Thanx, Guru. Just a few more days, I think. I've got the basing standing by too.

Hi Elizabeth, he served before and during the First World War , I have his service number and medals. My paternal grandfather served in the Royal Inniskilling Dragoons, another famous regiment. What rules are you using for the Colonial period ?
-
Hi, that's really interesting about your ancestors. :)
I have "Black Powder" so far, and the "Zulu!" supplement, for big battles.
I'm thinking of getting TSATF, but I'm not sure yet.
-
Yes, my group are very fond of Black Powder, I think they,d work well for the colonial period although I d,ont like them for Napoleonic,s. I,m slowly building up an A.W. Independance army ( Revolution) on your side of the pond , and we,ll use B.P. for it. Look forward to your future posts, good luck with the project.
-
Thank you. :) I've been thinking of starting British for AWI, but I think I'd better stay focused on Colonials for awhile. :)
-
good job anna
may have you got a suggestion about the bayonnet ?
for me she is so brillant (in french ''neuve brillante"), may be a little black ink shade an some little métal gun brush => look my beja rifle men for idea or inspiration. ;)
it's my little point of view.
sorry !!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
:) That's a good idea, I think I will tone them down a bit with washes.
No need to apologize, this is why I'm posting them, to get feedback.
I used Vallejo Model Air Steel, and it is *very* shiny. :)
-
That blue looks so much better now. If i can make a suggestion? Paint the bayonet the same colour as the metal on the rifle then give it a light drybrushing of silver... mostly towards the pointy end. I recon the whole unit will then look top notch ;)
-
That sounds good, I'll try that. :)
-
Yup . They are looking fine!
-
Thanx, Deedles. I've gotten a couple more done.
Lately, I've been doing 1 R.I.F., one KRRC, one '44 Commando, and one Supers or what-not.
Making progress and not getting bogged down and bored. :)
-
Quickie update - I just clear-coated (gloss) the last 10 Fusiliers, so 24 hours from now, I can base them and finish my first full unit for Black Powder/ Colonial wargaming. :)
-
Looking forward to seeing them in action!
I've just started the colonial period a swell. I'm going for 20s-30s Waziristan.
Are you going straight in with a mass battle system or going to get some skirmish games in first? I get to impatient to wait 'til I have a whole army before I game.

Are you using any of Empress' "Jazz Age Imperialism"? Those look lovely. :)
I'd love to skirmish, my King's Royal Rifle Corps are based on 20mm square skirmish bases, and about 65% finished. I'm just now meeting people in Colorado that are interested in gaming, so I do hope to start pretty soon.

yes! I've only allowed myself to go into a new theatre of war on the condition I buy one pack at a time and paint it up before buying the next one. My first pack was some Pashtuns/Afgans from Empress and they are lovely miniatures, full of character. I'm 75% through painting them, then to some gurkhas I think.
-
Sweet! Please post photos when you finish them. What brand are you using for the Gurkhas?
-
I think I've got some Copplestone Ghurkhas around somewhere, will have to have a dig around in the back of some cupboards. I'll put the Pashtuns up when their done, planning on putting them on the blog as well.

Anna,
They look much better with the toned down blanket rolls :-* :-*
